Brilliant video! Over tha last year I have upgraded my home network, my core gear is Edgerouter 4 with 4 Edgeswitch's with UNMS, also 3 unifi Ap's with a cloud key. I am not a network profesional at all but over the last 20 year I have enjoyed learnng, thank you for your videos its helped my learn alot. ( wish I had done it for a living )

Wow this is a nice device overview of both UNIFI and EdgeMAX products. Great work! Can you give more videos regarding advance routing configurations on edgemax switches and routers. This video is very helpful!
I deploy both. I typically use the USG and UniFI switch equipment for small and medium retail and service businesses and within small office environments. Medium size office environments are only outfitted with EdgeRouter and EdgeSwitch equipment.
I'm curious how an ER4 load balance setup in front of UniFi stack would fair.

Yes! Pleas a full stack video UNMS and with the airCube ACB-AC. Would really like to see the option the UNMS gives on a WiFi solution.
I hop one day the edgemax series will have sum of the same option as the UniFi series have, but keep the complex and quality the edgemax offers.

Willie - Should I use a USG or ER Lite for client's home use, for ISP speeds over 300 MBPS. Some of my clients use Hotwire Fision which uses a multi-gigabit Fiber-to-the-Unit (FTTU) Infrastructure and put in an ONT that converts
the fiber to copper. Please advise. Thanks.
Another great video. Lots of great info. A shame it wasn't out about 18 months ago when I went Unifi. It may had changed my mind, but probably not since I need APs and prefer all in 1 place.
Question about the Beta gear, I know it's not a guarantee that they will put them out, but typically how long does a Ubiquiti product take to go from beta to a production product?
Thank you for this video. Just a quick question: I am planning on switching to a different ISP who for some reason has disabled the ability to configure a custom DNS. So I am going to configure the standard issued router as bridged and use another router to do the actual routing. I have a small home network: I currently use 1 Ubiquiti UAP-AC-LR (access point) for WiFi. Will this EdgeRouter be a good choice to use as a router in combination with this AccesPoint? I also want to setup a VPN server with the router. Any advise or tips would be appreciated.
hey Willie, I have 2 UBNT AC LITE AP and one US-8-60W (got it cheap, new), I want to route from my modem to an EdgeRouter 5 or USG to the switch US-8-60W for my home. After watching your videos, setting up the ER series stuff looks easier and has more support for a novice. Can i use an ER with the US-8-60W without too much fuss?
Great video Willie. I would love to hear about how the 2 different technologies integrate? Is it possible to configure a vlan for an EdgeRouter which then gets populated to Unifi or do you need to do the config in both Edge and Unifi separately? EG: Replace a USG with an ER but use Unifi for the WLAN/Switches?
How do you run a WLAN with multiple UniFi AP's with an EdgeRouter instead of the USG? When you setup the Controller (Cloud key or Cloud server) all the network features require connection to a USG via a LAN port.
If this needs to be the network option 'VLAN Only', this won't work for me as I need the network do be VLAN 1 the same as my corporate network, and I cannot select that as VLAN1 is the default LAN with UniFi.
So frustrating.

Perhaps a stupid question but if i have both the USG and the EdgeRouterX how would you set that up? USG first or Edge first? I like the USG UI and Controller but the Edge did OpenVPN and other stuff well also. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
The easiest way to run UNMS now is through Ubiquiti's cloud based UNMS. I just tried it out, it's great! However you must add 10 Ubiquiti UNMS aware devices within the 1st month or have your account terminated. The cheapest way to get 10 UNMS aware devices is to purchase 10 Edgerouter X's. If you have a lot of I.T. customers then 1 EdgeRouter and 1 Edgeswitch per client means you only really need 5 clients or "sites". You COULD set one up as your main VLAN router and the rest up as switches. For business installs you're likely going to need more than a 3-5 port switch but you need 10 devices so daisy chain them to get more ports (I said cheap not efficient). At $60 per Edgerouter X that's still $600 worth of Ubiquiti gear at a bare minimum to run UNMS cloud, realistically you're looking at about $1000+ worth of EdgeMax gear to run the free UNMS cloud.
What's so great about UNMS cloud? Remote monitoring & analysis of your physical networks, ability to reboot devices & upgrade firmware. It's secure remote device administration. If you're installing networks but always getting calls to do more work, add devices like wifi or vlan switches to enlarge the network slowly, then UNMS is right for you. UNMS or UniFi are not for residential use, it's overkill. If you do I.T. work UNMS is great. It's similar to Spiceworks but because Ubiquiti develops both the hardware and software the integration is seamless and more secure. I prefer UNMS over UniFi for small business deployments. For enterprise UniFi is probably better but I don't have the need to go up to UniFi gear. Yes there are UniFi products that are UNMS aware. EdgeMax and UNMS cloud is perfect for most freelance I.T. needs.
Why is the UNMS cloud free? Because you're required to purchase at least $600 worth of Ubiquiti gear in order to use it. So it's not really free, it's more like a loyal customer benefit now. If you're on the UNMS cloud then in my opinion Ubiquiti should send along a free t-shirt. It's good advertising too. ;)

Blended IMO. At home I use edgemax for gateway and unifi inside for switches and AP. At cottage I use USG then a edgemax switch and unifi AP. I prefer my edgemax switch.
What’s your access pointe preference for VoIP. You say the UniFi line wouldn’t be your go to. For what reason?

An Edge AP would make my decision so much easier. I don't know why they don't already have these.
And an EdgeCloudKey running UNMS.
When I do stuff in my lab, I always ask my self, "What will I simulate today?". Personaly, I believe this to be the same for real sites. Say, got a hotel. Does it need all the advanced features? Is it a remote site? Chose what fit's. It is my oppinion, that UniFi is perfect for places, where company faces customers directly, because it can host guest portal. Hotels, remote rep. offices, bars/cafés... Now, when you need more advanced stuff, or need to mix and match different vendors, it's better to go with Edge. So building a central location with Edge make's sence.
When new USG will be released? USG3 is pretty old and doesn't support well the home users which has 1GB fiber option connection.

@johnnie broadway Only until you realize that the 10Gbps connection is $250 a month and all of the switches and routers that I need is really $$$$$
Great Video!! Made my decision to go with ER-12P but something towards the end raised an eyebrow. Maybe i misunderstood or i'm just to tired.... If i use the ER12p router and edge switch, i can't use a unifi nano HD ap??
You can use unifi AP with whatever router you have.

I thought you could do WAN2 on a USG. What happened to it. I remember it was there before.
Willie Howe I guess I could replace it with the edge router so I get the fail over feature. I don’t remember if it used to work with fail over but I thought it did.
vlans on a single router interface is perfectly normal thing to do, not crazy. its called router on a stick. one trunk connected interface can have numerous sub interfaces each with their own ip so that intervlan routin can occur
Can you do an updated video of Unifi vs UISP? I don't understand why we would want to use Unifi switches when we could get more features using Edgeswitches in UISP. Both are controller managed, similar price, Unifi just has less features.
But what about the beta products? I'm not sure if you mentioned those.

I do network administration for 3 different companies, about 24 sites total. These sites had existing network hardware of all Sonicwalls but a mix of switches and other network equipment.
I built a UniFi network for all of them with the UniFI switches and a univeral WiFi Network. So basically I built a large UniFi enterprise network but there was already existing security gateways etc. For that as well UniFi has been absolutely perfect. Before this, managing all the network equipment across these companies was a nightmare and basically impossible. Now it's all "Unified" and handing off management to someone in IT is a piece of cake.
Did you kept the Sonicwalls or did you replaced them with Unifi USG-Pros?
@@r.t.7643 kept the SonicWall at every location. The VPN that the SonicWall creates between each site allowed me to easily create the unifi sdwan. It's truly an ideal setup for these companies.
@@synthesizerneil But Unifi USG routers can create Site-to-Site VPNs same as Sonicwalls. I had a few were it's a USG together with a Sonicwall on the other end. Sonicwall is renowed as a Firewall so was this the reason you kept it or because of its powerful features?

We are a VoIP carrier and recommend ER-X for almost all networks with 50 or less users with smart queue configured (fq_codel) due to low cost, UNMS support and high reliability.
In reality anything with fq_codel QoS support works well. For switches look for anything that supports DSCP and make sure it is enabled.
If you are running a large network don't listen to me or any comments on UA-cam and find somebody to address your specific needs.
@@cmoullasnet , thanks for the info. Currently have a 2008 vintage cisco system for approx 25 people , and is due for an upgrade (i.e. 10/100 speed) have been doing a lot of research and the edge series seemed like a good value.

Buy a second user pc and network card eg dell sff 3020 in working state what 40 to 60 dollars then install PFSense puts all Ubiquiti gear in the shade believe me I have tried both unifi and edge maybe you can do a project for you subscribers Willie on PFSense. Yes I do still have Ubiquiti gear eg: G3 Flex and Aircube but PFSense is streets ahead when routing
It's clear that you prefer Edge over UniFi. I'm actually the opposite. I run 3 sites on UniFi and have so far simply not found the need for Edge. Multiple IPs would perhaps make me switch. I really prefer the controller setup of UniFi over Edge. What is needed much more than this video is a comparison between the UniFi controller versus UNMS. That would be very interesting.
Not really, but when you're talking enterprise needs Edge hands down has the capabilities. For instance dynamic routing have you tried to do this manually on UnFi it's a pain the backside. But for smaller setups i agree UniFi hands down purely for simplicity.

The USG is a POS. Mine just died and I won't be replacing it. Other Unifi routers are overkill.
