Yes. LN readers did expect a hit during Turtle Arc, we just didn't expected they would mess up Kizuna Arc along with Turtle Arc.
Spirit Turtle was lowest point in the Shield Hero, but it was the necessary evil for the following seasons.

I started falling off as I got further into the LN. Season 2 was just the final nail in the coffin.
The content of season 1, second half of season 2, and season 3 are the highlights of the story for me. The latest volumes of the LN feel like a complete departure from the feel and narrative of the start of the series.
A lot of us wanted a series where a weaker underdog rose up to meet the challenge of a world against them. Later in the series almost the entire world is with Naofumi, and he has so many McGuffin shields you never feel as though his party is in any real danger.
This makes it feel more like a standard isekai, which is fine, but Naofumi still has his sour attitude that is just a slog to read/watch when there is no longer any societal source of the bitterness.

Shield Hero season 3 did operate much better than season 2 and with more consistent quality to the animation. However, if it where to return to season 1 form they'd need to return to 23-25 episodes in season. Because the pacing to give character build up and impactful moments hasn't landed as it should. Also if the movement in animation during episodes became closer to the season 3 opening. It would draw many viewers who left, to return.

Season 3 was definitely a huge improvement over Season 2, which was disappointing but not terrible honestly. Season 3 did a good job developing its side characters, the score was excellent, and the animation was possibly the best of the entire series so far. This. Shield Hero needed someone that actually knew which parts needed to be shown, especially during season 2.
Like stated, many didn't know how Shield Hero will move after he got his revenge. And Season 2 was dabbling on that issue, but before giving it a definite answer, Turtle comes around and throws a wrench in it. In the spur of the moment, Spirit Turtle comes out as a wtf moment. In the hingsight however, it was probably made to gain some time without making things full of plot holes. With it, Kizuna Arc developed and Naofumi's absence in the Raphtalia's World made things relatively worse for there, aka gained the time author needed.

    • @Kyrrua_

You can clearly see they tried to focus on important part of the story and fix main things tho there's still few parts that couldn't be fixed or that they didn' thave the time to fix or that they decided they would cut.
If season 3 was authorized to produce 24 episodes with a good pacing and development like season 1 then they would have completely "fixed" season 2.
But whatever I enjoy it, its clear its good but as always twitter warrior will still try to say the contrary even with proofs

Shield Hero is one of the only series to redeem itself compared to others like Tokyo Ghoul and The Promised Neverland, all 3 series had terrible adaptions that changed their source material which ruined the entire flow of their stories.
Shield Hero's source material isn't exactly the best compared to these other fantasy stories, but it's above average. People need to understand that Naofumi cleared his name already, and the story is going to flow in a different direction which is focusing on the waves and guardian beasts.
The series popularity is still there but obviously died down a lot, and its kudos to the staff involved in season 3 that fixed the story and put it back on the right track.
I don't think it fell off completely, but it definitely took a nose dive

I for one really enjoyed S2 personally. I was heavily invested into it and when it ended I jumped right into the middle of S3 (about 5 episodes had aired) and it was a total blast. S3 was pretty good and really had some of my favorite moments of our characters including a lot of the side characters and now a new pairing in the show that I'm quite happy about. S4 already has a great plot point leading into it and honestly I'm excited to see where it goes.

Not sure about the general opinion, but sadly it did fall off, for me at least.
After the second season, I really hoped it would return with a bang, but it didn't.
Sure, the animation was a bit better than the last season (not a high bar, admittedly), but imho the problem lies with the story: no stakes at all (or at least, I could feel no urgency) and too many characters to handle (with none of them having any depth, not even the few ones that were kinda well characterized in the first season).
Also, I'm not sure if it was the adaptation or it's like that in the novels as well, but the "dragon" arc felt really generic to me and the reveal in the final episode, with Raphtalia and sudden ninjas appearing out of nowhere was almost schizophrenic, in my opinion.
I'm baffled, it feels like Log Horizon all over again.

I think the biggest problem is the direction of S2 after S1. Shield Hero S1 left such a great mark specially with it's conclusion that it didn't felt like another season was needed as most of the main plot was resolved with little to no fillers left. S2 completely destroyed the narrative S1 built upon by cutting up so many things which in turn made the plot of S2 itself felt generic compared to S1's plot. S3 did improve upon it but not by much. The charm and uniqueness of S1 still wasn't felt in S3 unfortunately. I hope S4 can somewhat revive this but it's highly unlikely that's ever gonna happen.

it's not that it's bad, i just think if you liked the anime from the beginning you have higher chances of watching the rest of it regardless of if it's season 3, 4 or 5. i watched half of season 1 and realized that it was just not for me in terms of the story itself. i felt like i was watching a homework rather than an anime for fun just because it was the main thing people were talking about in season 1 (the revenge plot line). obviously if you reached season 3 that means you obviously love the story and will watch all future seasons. i've only seen half of season 1 and got spoiled on the ending of the revenge plot line, so i can't really judge the rest of it. but i also won't personally recommend it to people just to be sincere since i didn't really enjoy it at it's highest point.
if there's one thing i find weird is just the good old question of "why is this getting so many seasons when there are so many better unadapted stories out there?" i keep seeing new seasons of this and the Slime anime when i would much rather have a new anime. though this also stands as my personal preference since I dropped both shows mid season 1 for about the same exact reasons.

  • @Masra94

Still don't understand why people think this is a revenge story, especially anime watchers. Light novel Naofumi is much more aggressive and darker than anime Naofumi and even then it's not a revenge story. Naofumi in the anime is INCREDIBLY milquetoast. In the light novel, it's Naofumi who asks for Myne's execution. The only reason the naming even comes up is so he can have some satisfaction if he's not allowed to kill the King or Myne. The whole trial scene in the light novel isn't supposed to be triumphant, it's supposed to come off as very petty and incredibly cringe.
At what point is Naofumi going around looking for revenge? It's a fantasy adventure story with some darker elements. It's not a revenge story. You would think the main character would be going out and looking for revenge if this was a revenge story. Naofumi is just annoyed by everything and he doesn't have the energy for revenge. He just wants to be left alone to do his own thing.

Season 2 was disappointing, okay, and Season 3 was a great return to form, but it's nowhere near being a shell of its former self. Some people are spitting on it because they left during season 2 and didn't bother to give it a chance. And it's Twitter being Twitter, it's one of the closest thing to being an echo chamber of a singular opinion. The truth is that they're a loud minority, and more people are enjoying the show without saying much. They just tune-in every week, buy the Blu-Ray sets, the merch, engage with the IP in general. That's why Shield Hero has had 2 seasons announced at the exact same time (season 2 & 3), and is getting a fourth one.
So no. It did not fall off, far from it. If it did, it wouldn't have been renewed.

I stopped in the beginning of S3. The magic/power system had gotten really confusing and had become impossible for me to ignore. This was a problem since season 1, but the show at least made up with it with interesting characters. By confusing I mean the fact that Naofumi can do almost anything - his shield can consume and become anything. He can even rewrite the genes of a magic seed. S2 had a nonsensical villain who must have the ability to see the future. That is the only way he could have known that Naofumi would escape that pocket dimension. I'm also not sure why Book Man would want to cause a wave. To gather energy? That's never been hinted at before then, that the waves create energy. Also, I forget how many times Naofumi has had his power taken away from him.
Here's another problem: Vassal vs Cardinal. I have no idea what the difference is between them other than Vassal weapons can be wielded by anyone and Cardinal heroes have to be summoned. I'm also confused as to why they even need summoned heroes. They already seem to be capable of defending themselves, and I think that I saw them take on Cardinal heroes briefly.
I might go back to S3 later. I saw part of one of the middle episodes and got turned off almost entirely. Another person from yet another world? I just didn't care. I also read on the wiki that there's a storyline that I think is stupid where Raphtalia is secretly royalty. I have forgotten why I cared in the first place.

This is funny to me. I like this series and I even enjoyed season 2 despite being different from its original point of getting revenge, but the characters have to grow at some point. What’s funny is that I didn’t even know about the discourse about ROTSH online and how many who have vocalized about the series don’t enjoy it. But fortunately there does seem to be a silent majority who does support this show. Personally I’m excited to see where the show continues

Shield hero has not fallen off. It’s just fake fan bases. Of an anime they see one thing don’t like it and then stop watching it and then talk shit about it that’s all it is the band wagoners. Real fans have been watching the rising of the shield hero since the very beginning and read the manga, etc.. these fake new fans, they watch it see one thing here one thing that’s animated wrong something that doesn’t look right and then they jump ship those are not real fans

There's a difference between falling off in terms of popularity and falling off in terms of the quality of the content. I'm always happy when something retains its popularity throughout the years, provided it's not a piece of shit like Demon Slayer, but if the content doesn't match the popularity, I'd say the series has fallen off. I feel the same way from a personal standpoint about Shield Hero because I've been watching since 2019, maybe 2020, and have seen how bland it all becomes. Seriously, I used to consider Naofumi a very refreshing protag and Raphtalia one of the coolest female leads in anime, but now I barely care about them. In fact, I'd say that the most interesting characters at this point are some of the ones from other worlds; specifically, the petite girl from season 2 that's older than she looks (forgot her name). You know the narrative is struggling when secondary characters become more appealing than main characters.

I think it’s popular in Japan. I mean look at Kingdom, Golden Kamuy, and Bungo Stray Dogs what no one talks about in English spaces get more seasons while western anime fans love stuff Baccano that never get a second season. Also Attack on Titan is over, so it will wane in quality.

For me Shield Hero just barely kept it's head above water the whole season. Overall the main draw should be solving the waves or the invading heros from other worlds, however the author has abandoned those seemingly. Anyone with intrigue left are waiting for the aforementioned above but not receiving it.

To comment on why season 2 was so bad as a light novel reader:
It was not just the animation on the turtle itself that made the season horrible. This is indeed one of the slower arcs in the story, but the anime handled it all so poorly that it made it feel SIGNIFICANTLY worse than it actually was. Eclair and Hengen Muso lady being glossed over was a massive oversight. The lack of casualties in that battle was a massive oversight. The ENTIRE arc in Kizunas world was done wrong even down to how they were initially divided upon entry to the world and the fact that "All the holy heros are dead except Kizuna". Then the animation and music are done lazily. The importance of Liberation class magic and the accidental use of Sacrifice Aura along with its consequences. Rishias entire arc and her growth is just skipped, so it's confusing and jarring in season 3 when she can just suddenly fight Itsuki and tank a curse skill. Season 2 was adapted abysmally, and i would definitely argue that most of the issues in Season 3, even though it was done VERY well, exist because they were cleaning up as much as they could from season 2.

Shield Hero did fall off after season 2, but it kinda looks like season 3 saved it and gained popularity again. And just because in CR it's on the top 10 doesn't mean it didn't fall off. There's some factors you're not including. Lets not forget that after season 1 BOTH season 2 and 3 were already confirmed. Once season 2 aired, that threw season 3's project into question. But either way, seems like season 3 saved the show. Honestly, if season 2 was 24 episodes and they didn't remove the mystery aspect of the Spirit Tortoise arc it wouldn't have had such a dip. Honestly Idk wtf people are talking about with the Spirit Tortoise arc. In the manga it was good. Is it the best, I can see why it's not, but to say people didn't like it is such an exaggeration.

It's fell-off because it's never reached the popularity of Season 1 again, and Season 2 was so odd.
The events in the couple novels it covers seemed way more exciting than the adaptation.
I'm not quite sure how they dropped the ball so hard. The giant wait between 1 and 2, plus the really short length (and ending on a clip show), didn't help.

I think that season 2, in all, wasn't that bad, the cgi was, odds are, rushed or the animators didn't have enough time, i think the author in season 3 was trying to make the other heroes seem more like people, rather than small toddlers that Naufumi has to clean up after. I have high hopes for season 4 tho, the upcoming war arc seems like it can be really good.

Tbh season 1 was great. S2 was horrid, and S3 was a step in the right direction but was a bit lackluster. I'm honestly surprised they are going for a S4 but from what I was informed of, crunchyroll is the one that basically puts money into the show so it doesn't solely involve DVD sales.

Volume 16 ends the Faubrey arc and teases the return to the Otherworld so season 4 would likely cover 3 volumes. If split cour or runs like the first season then the 2nd cour could cover volumes 17-19 then a third cour or season 5/6 would be volume 20-22 with Mamoru, Filolia and Holn. That would be better pacing than rushing the last two seasons

Honestly, I have no idea where the story of this anime is headed, it sort of just feels off, S1 was great, S2 was dogshit, and S3 is meh, not particularly good. My friends had told me it would fall off, but I was like nope, and now here we are. It just all feels a bit pointless. Also, it's not really more popular than AoT, mainly being, the anime is still ongoing, while Attack on Titan ended last year. So big discrepancy there, being in the top 10 charts on Crunchyroll hardly means anything unless its like big anime like One Piece, Dragon Ball, Bleach, AoT and plenty others

I loved season 1 and remember that season 2 AND 3 were announced immediately, this made the whole 3 year wait even more frustrating especially because the animation of season 2 was quite frankly often not good and they even had problems deciding whether they follow the lightnovel or webnovel plot. There were clearly some production issues. Season 3 was way better while definitely not season 1 and relatively tame.

The story was bad(to me) but it still introduced many elements that kept me intrigued enough to finish the first season. I then heard that the second season was really rushed and decided not to pick it back up. Should I give it another chance? I'm just worried the story isn't going to get better than the first half of season 1

Here’s my take, to be considered “fell off” for a anime it must not have gotten continues multiple seasons (since Shield Hero did get multiple continues seasons it still hasn’t “fell off” yet, things could still change in the future however and that’s coming from a fan of the series).
But can popularity “fell off” oh that sure did, it’s definitely not as popular as it was once but since the lost of popularity wasn’t drastic enough that it can get multiple seasons it’s still doing well and hey guess what since it’s not as popular as it was it can now get away with stuff that a lot of popular shows will get “criticise” (or really harassment since that’s what been happening with most popular shows these days) for.

It definitely fell off. Season 1 was great and I still enjoy rewatching especially the first half. When season 2 came out I was excited for its return and straight away jumped back in but by the time I got to ep 3/4 I lost interest but after 5 years purely coz of season 1, decided to catch up on the whole thing S1-S3 and season 3 definitely hooked me back in but once again lost me in the second half. Whether it’s the original material faults idk but the story was poor and rushed

Season 3 was definitely better in all aspects when compared to S2. But S3 really did lost the charm that made it popular in the first place. I remember watching the eps and I wasn't even slightly invested on any of the 'story' or characters at all. I just continued watching for the sake of finishing the season.
Sadly, this is the final nail in the coffin for me. I won't continue watching the series but I hope the fans of the series will still get to enjoy it.

The series seems good to me in general but the only problem it has could be said to be the animation only in the monsters but there are worse CGI animations such as berserk, kamikatsu, ex-arm etc. In comparison to those, the shield hero is fine in general, it was only the fault of the director of the second one, he should never touch anime anymore. We also have the director of made in abyss who will direct the fourth one as well, apart from the fact that he directed the third one and it was better for me and I participate in episodes of the first one so it's not so bad compared to other series that have had worse treatment like Tokyo Ghoul and the promised neverland.
But I'm still going to wait for it because I like the series because of the novels and the manga.
