One thing I loved about this film was that Ginger wasn't the usual badassed, tomboyish type of heroine that you usually see in "we have to survive" films where the main character is a girl. She was just a regular, endearing type of character that showed that you don't have to have to be "rough and tough" to be a hero.
It's my Top 10 feminist movies
@@juliamavroidi8601 I don't see what's feminist about it
I don’t see your sense of humour
Dude ?? It's a chicken, what are you talking about?
@@juliamavroidi8601 well, you do have a point. Other than Rocky, Fowler, Mr. Tweedy, Nick, and Fetcher, this film does feature a prominently female cast.
Aardman and Dreamworks could’ve had a pretty great relationship and partnership. Unfortunately, because of the overnight success of the Shrek franchise, Aardman started to feel the pressure from Dreamworks. When they were making Curse of the Were Rabbit, Dreamworks wanted to Americanize it by using the Shrek formula that was common at the time (toilet jokes, celebrities and pop culture references). Aardman stopped them from doing that, but after Flushed Away, Aardman left Dreamworks for good. If only Dreamworks wasn’t so pushy.
Yeah, but right now Aardman Animation is joining with Netflix.
It was more than that... Katzenburg kept trying to make Aardman go back a redo the animation (much like his Disney days with projects like the Black Cauldron and Aladdin), this one was notorious in in Chicken Run... which began to annoy Aardman, and things RARELY annoyed people at Aardman... and I do mean rarely... Then there was the recasting situation with "Curse of the Were Rabbit" not only due to Katzenburg's obsession to Americanize but the fact he made up excuses that nobody would understand the northern accents of W&G... so as a big middle finger to Katzenburg they made Sallis and Bonham-Carter use the term "Marrow" condescendingly and cast PC Macintosh with Peter Kay, a Bolton comedian who was as northern as they came when it came to being Northern... making the iconic joke of someone committing "Arson" as "Someone 'arson around... (arsing around)"
It really could have been a Disney-Pixar type partner ship, and if DreamWorks (specifically Katzenberg) wasn't so pushy, Aardman movies could have been doing more better at the box office, as some of their later films made back the same number as their budget. But alas...
Yep Dreamworks kept on milking the series(Shrek) and that's where the series died very quickly(and I Mean very quickly) and that's where Shrek started to get boring, garbage and dead(and i mean very dead) and other films like it.
Interesting facts I never knew that thanks! :)
Fun fact about this movie that this movie entertain the members of the academy awards/oscars so much they want to add a new category and that is one of my favorites best animated feature film and you guys should called this movie the one that started it all 👍
I still don’t understand how Beauty and the Beast didn’t do that first.
And DreamWorks made history when Shrek managed to win the _first_ Oscar award for Best Animated Feature, outshining other candidates like "Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius" and even "Monsters' Inc". *DID YA HEAR THAT, PIXAR!?*
They should have made that category back in 1989 after "The Little Mermaid" instead but all of us can truly thanks Aardman animated classic "Chicken Run" for showing the Oscars
Actually: it was more Jeffery Katzenburg went on a long angery rant to the Academy that their needed to be an animated feature category after the extensive FYC Best picture campaign for chicken run failed. I vividly remember him saying something to the tune of “The only categories animated movies get nominated for are The music ones which no one gives a shit about” or something
“Is this as good as you imagined?”
“No, it’s better.”
Thank you very much, AniMat, for not only reviewing my favorite animated movie in my life but what I considered to be Aardman’s best work ever, PERIOD! And for many reasons:
1. A rare occasion where a British animated film included a well-known actor in the United States
2. An example of how animated film can be taken seriously with its tone while having its funny moments
3. Aardman’s only movie that doesn’t rely on butt or fart jokes in their filmography
4. My temporary interest in stop-motion animation until Laika’s “Boxtrolls” teaser trailer revived it
5. A standout from the early computer-animated comedies of Pixar, DreamWorks, and Blue Sky
Now, don’t get me wrong. While I still enjoy Bristol’s plasticine clay feature film work, I wish they tone down the juvenile humor that made me a bit uncomfortable at times in “Shaun the Sheep the Movie” and “Early Man” if they plan another theatrical movie in the future. Even after making only five theatrically stop-motion films, like what Laika has done, keep that optimistic spirit going, and thank you for this masterpiece, Aardman Animations!
Objection to number 3: The Curse of Were-Rabbit didn't have fart Jones as well.
@@piotrsegal6475 True, but "The Curse of the Were-Rabbit", along with "The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists" and "Early Man" did have butt jokes.
I often say" Chicken Run" is still one of the best stop-motion animation film in history, even in my opinion better then "The Nightmare Before Christmas".
@@TheImaginator972 I started to appreciate "Nightmare" when I began in my 20s.
@@BigLightning4360 not fart jokes though. At least for The Pirates! Band of Misfits.
I always loved this movie as a kid, but I never realized how AMAZING it really is
Me too. It’s fantastic
That’s what movie like this should be from now on. Sure, kids today can enjoy “Trolls”, they might also enjoy “Frozen”, they might also enjoy some generic animated films like “Secret Life of Pets” or “DC League of Super-Pets” ect. But I enjoy films like “Toy Story”, “How To Train Your Dragon”, “Finding Nemo”, “Shrek”, “Wallace & Gromit” and so on and so forth. Those animated movies I cherish to death and I still do to this day.
This masterpiece is my favorite stop motion movie. Why go see a CHICKEN LITTLE, when we can see a CHICKEN RUN? But seriously, this movie is what made me a fan of stop motion and AARDMAN.
Also, does anyone think nick and fetcher are like statler and Waldorf from the muppets?
So was mine.... IT was truly a masterpiece.
@@scoutart1508 plus the fact that a majority of Muppets projects where done in the UK so the muppets are no strangers to british humor.
This timeless Aardman Animated Movie is still one of my most favorite stop-motion animated movie. Even this year I actually compare Chicken Run with Toy Story 3 since their Prison-Escape kids movie and also thanks to Chicken Run as well I have got into loving the 1963 film classic "The Great Escape" back in 2016.
Well, Dreamworks is the distributor in the U.S. Aardman is the maker of the film.
@@hunterolaughlin So True, I forgotten to add Aardman name too. Since I'm a huge fan of their work from Wallace and Gromit and Shaun The Sheep.
I like both “Chicken Run” and “Toy Story 3” equally.
@@G.S.Productions Glad you too like them both, Chicken Run and Toy Story 3 got an well written story for an movie, prison-escape with Chickens or with Toys.
Dude the fact that you give some credit to Dreamwork in this channel’s comment season is a crime to this channel’s fan base. You got some balls.
" Why, back in my R.A.F. days, we didn't have any CGI codswallop. We had effort and imagery by creating clay figures and snapping the photos and tally-ho! Chops away! "
I could actually picture Fowler saying that if he were an animator
This and The Emperor's New Groove are two cool 2000 movies
Don't forget Fantasia 2000, The Road to El Dorado and Rugrats in Paris.
Might I also add in “The Tigger Movie”?
❤💖 One of my personal favorite animated films and one of the best stop motion animated films made by Aardman Animation!
Stop motion animation deserved to be popular and deserved so much love ❤, support and recognition by the public as much as 2d hand drawn animation than computer animation. I'm glad 😊 and proud 👏🏻 that you got a chance to see and reviewed this film, Mat! I take Chicken Run over Chicken Little any day of the week! 🐔🐓🐣🐤🐥 😃😀😄😁😊😉 👍🏻 💖❤
This movie was so much fun to watch as a kid and it still is now, it's very rewatchable! The humor, animation, and music is what makes it for me! I love how John Powell was inspired the music of the Great Escape but it's different in its own way. I love how there are kazoos in the score.
imagine just being in an enourmous music score, then it just all stops, and a bunch of kazoos start to play XD I'd never be able to keep a straight face... And WOE be to whoever coughs, sneezes, or anything of the sort into their kazoo XD
Just rewatched it. And still amazing imo. Wished it was a bit longer to expand some characters but overall a great film. One of my favorite animated films of all time.
That Creepy Reading's cameo at the end was really epic. I'm excited to see your King of Pigs review.
One of the darkest movies of the 2010 decade.
I hope it doesn't happen. I don't wanna see AniMat getting nightmares while watching this movie.
I wish Animat would collaborate with blameitonjorge.
I hope that creapy reading appears in animats king of pigs review

Imagine doing "Great Escape with chickens" and making it WORK. God bless Aardman.
I know right thanks to the classic 1963 MGM film "The Great Escape" starring Steve McQueen. Also Toy Story 3 is similar with "Great Escape with Toys".
I really think Aardman would be great at making an adaptation of a Rareware property. I could totally see them making a Banjo-Kazooie movie.
That would be awesome!
Considering how I named goldfish when I was a kid after these characters, I loved this movie as a kid. Considering this movie was released in 2000, this is an achievement in animation back then and is still admired today.
I used to watch this movie when I was a child and I now love it even more, and this review was pretty dope.
Ending 2021 with a seal of approval, excellent!
I love how Ginger is a strong female character without being a feminist bait. She is strong also because she has to be, rather just to prove a point about women
Chicken Run: One of Dreamworks best.
Definitely
More of an aardman film though.
One of Aardman Animation Best Masterpiece beside Wallace and Gromit.
What's interesting about Chicken Run is that it's 1 of the RARE DreamWorks movies that got the G-rating.
@@joshmontemayor6098 ironically I feel like it’s more worthy of a PG rating than stuff like Madagascar, Over the hedge, trolls, boss baby and shark tale.
Who else always wanted to try a Chicken Pie as a kid?
I heard rumors that this was gonna get a long awaited sequel, but since Shaun The Sheep already made movie that could've been If you replace all the herd of Sheep with Chickens what else did you honestly except, but not giving up hope If they still have something original In mind.
Whenever I finish watching chicken run I always start craving chicken products
I know it’s against the films message
@@edenanimates1465 You rather eat cows Instead, since that Burger King commercial awhile back! 😉😆
Fun Fact: Both Rocky and Ginger were named after co-director Nick Parks’ childhood pet chickens
I didn’t know he had pet chickens. Unless you’re trying to troll someone.
As an animal love, the scene where one of the chickens gets her head chopped off terrified me when I was little.
Chicken run is a great example of amazing British animation and one of the best animated films from Aardman and Dreamworks animation
I was actually terrified by the designs of chicken run, though now I’m over it.
Chicken Run and Wallace and Gromit are my childhood.
I speculate that Tweedys farm wasn't too bad a place for the chickens until Mrs Tweedy took over, that Mr Tweedy and his family were actually fairly decent as far as egg farmers go, and while he had gone along with his wife's way of doing things to appease her, Mr Tweedy didn't start hating the chickens until they decided to escape due to the poor conditions.
aka The Great Escape for Kids XD
👍👍👍💯💯💯
I will never get tired of stop motion like this. Just like Wallace and Gromit they know their stuff.
👍👍👍💯💯💯💯
Harry Gregsson -- Williams and John Powell's score... I think it's one of the best they have done
Agreed and I always listen to the iconic opening scene of Chicken Run. It's my favorite music score in the movie.
Honestly, I have to disagree with both of you on that, the score for the movie is great, but I don’t think it’s Harry Gregson-Williams and John Powell’s best work, I think the soundtracks that they did for the Shrek and How to Train Your Dragon movies are their best works
Oh yeah that’s right I prefer the soundtracks for both the Shrek and How to Train Your Dragon franchises over Chicken Run’s soundtracks
I absolutely love this movie! It makes me really upset that no one is talking about this movie. But when they do, it always brings a smile to my face. Since when everyone has something to say about Chicken Run, it's always positive. What an underrated masterpiece! This is one of my personal favorite movies of all time!
I just watch this movie at a hotel when I was 10, and I knew that this is great.
Anytime is a good time to watch this movie (or just Aardman in general)!
One fascinating parallel I've always found with this movie, is with Pocahontas, where the animals were supposed to talk and there was supposed to be a turkey voiced by John Candy, but after Candy's passing, they nixed that idea. So it's kind of a nice twist of irony that Mel Gibson, who acted in Pocahontas, would go on to play a rooster in this movie.
one of my all time favorite movies next to shrek i can quote almost every line from this film
Chicken Run was my better childhood film unlike the last one that AnIMat reviewed.
Best Animated Stop Motion Film of 2000! plus Joshua Orro would be proud of you for reviewing this!
I can still remember watching this movie on Netflix before watching the Dark Crystal and I still like it, it's like one of my favourite movies 👍🏻🏆
This is by far my favorite movie from the studio, even more than the Wallace and gromit movie!
I didn’t expect this one to get the animat seal of approval
Great timing for this review, as I just watched the movie a week ago and I'm on my yearly Aardman kick.(Which is lasting much more than usual!) I love the story, setting, animation, the character designs always make me smile and the score has no reason to go so hard! By the end of the movie I was literally cheering for these characters!
Easy 9/10 movie!
This was awesome when I was young also I remember having nightmares with faces of the tweety’s. and I danced during the party scene.
Also not to mention the stellar soundtrack from Harry Gregson-Williams and John Powell, I always listen to the movie's music every now and then
I've been meaning to rewatch this movie for quite a long time, since I only saw it once in theaters.
And boy was that video ending quite a surprise! I wonder what the next review will be.
Thank you for reviewing this legendary masterpiece of a movie.
I just watched this movie again recently and it sure is one of the greatest animated films of all time and easily in my top 20 favourite movies of all time.
Given how That Creepy Reading wants Animat to watch “The King Of Pigs” next month, We mustn’t panic. We mustn’t panic! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUGGGGGHHH!

@@crimsoncrusader518 I was just quoting Chicken Run.
@@tavvyprods1275 Oh, haven't really seen it, I used to be afraid of the look of the characters, though I'm thinking of looking at it somepoint.
7:24 I distinctly remember getting the movie on VHS in the summer of 2004 as a kid along with the live action George of the Jungle starring Brendan Fraser and as soon as I saw Rocky and Ginger swing, I thought about George of the Jungle
I actually watched it recently before Thanksgiving, mainly as a pallet cleanser following a double feature of the Thankskilling movies
This review is leading up to the BBC One Shaun the Sheep Christmas Idents. Great timing man!
🎵Flip, Flop, Fly...I don't care if I die🎵
Sorry...I just remembered that underrated song
First, a great review video. I find Chicken Run to have one of the most memorable film scores in animation. I may not have realized it at first, but John Powell has to be one of my favorite film composers to exist. And second, am I sensing a collaboration classic review with ThatCreepyReading?
This movie was my childhood, my grandma has the vhs tape and I always loved watching it.
Chicken Little basically walked so Chickens can ''Run'', Haha pun intended.

I thought he was gonna give it an 8/10 since he gave other aardman movies an 8/10 too
Now this is something wonderful! Not only is my other request, but this is something I have been waiting for years
I remember loving this movie when I was just a baby, along with others like Robin hood. I can even say this movie and I have the same age! It didn't win an Oscar, but it sure did win the Seal of Approval!
Happy 20th anniversary Chicken Run!
It's been a while since I last saw "Chicken Run", but I do remember seeing it a few times when I was young and having fun with it. Along with "The Nightmare Before Christmas" this is one of those movies that always comes to mind whenever I think of stop motion animated films, so seeing this review take flight was fun. Meanwhile, I have no idea what the next review is, since that ending took me by surprise and actually confused me if anything else.

Not even 6 minutes into the review and yet I feel like wanting to rewatch the movie.

I just watch this movie at a hotel when I was 10, so, does that count?
Chicken Run will always be peak for stop motion!
What an epic twist ending!
Thanks for the high rating, it’s about time someone appreciated this movie
I remember watching this movie when I was a kid and now were getting a Sequel for this movie
Ah yes, the first of the original three collaborations between Aardman and DreamWorks Animation, and it's not only one of Aardman's best films, but also one of DreamWorks Animation's most charming films. Anyone Agree?
Also, WTF was that ending of this video, I guess it's a collaboration classic review based on a distributing South Korean animated film, from one of the comments I just heard, is it a film called "The King of Pigs"?
I guess so, since when I first watch this movie, I kinda getting scared of the middle schoolers swearing and starting to fight each other.
And also, I just want to say one thing, "Please don't make AniMat review this movie! I don't wanna give him some nightmares! Just let Steve Reviews reviewing this!"

I Think That Chicken Run Kinda Reminds Me of Madagascar, Yeah It’s Does Had A Farm Theme To It But They Both Movies About Animals Escape From Their Prison So They Can Live Free In The Wild.
Still Aardman's best movie after all these years. Love how they created the Pie Machine

Great Review Animat Chicken Run is of the best Movies from both Aardman and Dreamworks and maybe sometime in the future you will get to review the other two Films Dreamworks and Aardman made together Wallace and Gromit The Curse of the Were Rabbit and Flushed Away which like Chicken Run are Awesome Films
i rewatched this because i have been familiar with it the entire time to the extent that "rocky can't fly" is something that i basically always watch knowing
yeah in my case the film has aged relatively well, still makes it obvious it's from the actual beginning of the 21st century in many a way
however i realise how horribly straightforward it really is like jesus christ. chickens try to escape, farmers won't let them and the farmer preventing them is looked down upon by the other farmer, everyone wants to escape because everyone dies if they are unable to produce eggs, a rooster enters the scene and pretends to know flying because he wants to obnoxiously be the ladies man, his wing is also damaged to prevent him from being able to fly in the event that he can but also so that he is unable to reveal that he can't while everyone's optimism prevents them from seeing the possibility that he is like them and also can't fly, the rooster saves the protagonist from dying due to antagonist vendetta, the rooster encourages everyone else with something outright lyricisied with "fly, i don't care if i die" as if it's any different from what ginger was already telling them about the fact that they WILL die if they don't escape, the rooster abandons everyone following the senior rooster honouring him for said encouragement while also giving everyone the revelation that he actually can't fly only to return upon seeing that everyone is still going to die for the sake of melisha's profits after everyone actually listened to the senior and designed an airborne vehicle from the many huts, the chickens escape and the antagonist is defeated because the chicken is somehow able to hold an entire human in weight which ends up sending her into her own machine which causes it to explode and also gives willard the chance to give her karma for the abuse given throughout the film, the chickens land in a bird sanctuary and take it over. throughout all of THAT, the creators clearly have a bias towards babs by making her airheadedness seem like something so... totally not painful to watch in every scene, even though it is, and also use various british jokes that are way too forced to not just seem awkward
i mean there is going to be a sequel so it had better be an upgrade from that
Good luck with the next review anamat
My reaction to what it is this. ua-cam.com/video/vM5Q97Z31A8/v-deo.html
I’m from England and aardman is one of my favourite studios because they represent our country in the animation side of things
One thing I always had the vibe of Chicken Run was it had some sneaky slip ins of Nick Park's love for "Last of the Summer Wine" (which starred voice of Wallace, the late great Peter Sallis), when looking at Bunty it's clear she's based off of Aunt Ivy (played by the late Jane Freeman) who ran the café and Mr and Mrs Tweedy were cleary based off of married couple Howard and Pearl (Norman Clegg's neighbours, played by the late Robert Fyfe and late Juliette Kaplan) with the relationship of Mr Tweedy's constant "excuses" getting on Mrs Tweedy's nerves. (also worth noting a majority of the cast have Yorkshire accents, probably placing the farm (well in *my* opinion anyways) somewhere from between Holmfirth to Glossop. (so basically the farm could be anywhere between Sheffield and Manchester)
I'll be watching this again soon after I marathon the first 3 Wallace&Gromit shorts
I loved this film I used to have a ginger Teddy bear I'd always watch it eating mince pies for some reason 😂😂 probably because of the chicken pie scene lol
Being northern ( Manchester 🇬🇧) I'd always guess which part of the country they were from 😂😂😂
This movie was Aardman’s magnum opus
Same to Wallace and Gromit shorts too 😁
I hope the sequel is good
Same here. While I think it would be better if they just left this movie alone, I am curious to know what kind of story they have in mind for a sequel.
I'll be honest, Mrs Tweedy really scared me as a kid. I mean she just killed a chicken and planned to turn the chickens into pies. Look, I know she's an egg farmer and just want to make more money but that cruel and evil personality really scares me.
I use to watch this on home media on after school or in the big screen
I think the ending was inspired by Venom: Let there be Carnage mid credit scene
FUN FACT: Rocky was also voiced by Mel Gibson who also did the voice of John Smith in Pocahontas!
Another fun fact: Mel Gibson’s troublesome comments have been known to leave him in hot water most of the time.

I love that movie so much I like the humor in the action scene and I love the relationship between Ginger and Rocky and the prison break scene was amazing can awkwardly what movie that he is going to review next
😄YES! 🙂Thanks, Animat for not only reviewing this movie, but for giving it the Animat’s Seal of Approval.😊This is a great film. 😍I love it so much.
Funny story: We had this movie on VHS and there were a few scenes that were over watched because one of my daughters, Hannah, mimicked Ms. Tweetie while my younger daughter, Sarah,(As a baby) was laughing and then Hannah, while sounding exactly like Ms. Tweetie, said "Why are you laughing?" And Sarah was like 🤨
I watched this movie when I was a child and when I'm grown up this sort of reminds me of the holicost.
