I’ll never forget watching The Ring for the first time alone as a kid. One sentence followed by the most disturbing jumpscare I ever saw that traumatized me for years. “I saw her face.”
Talk To Me: Haven't seen this yet but I will The Descent: Eh. Not that scary. The Sixth Sense: Not scary but still good movie to watch alone. The Silence of the Lambs: Great movie you can watch alone. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: disturbing and creepy, yet rewatchable. I definitely would not watch alone tho Terrifier 2: It's ok. Misery: Never watch this alone if you know you have a stalking self-proclaimed girlfriend Halloween: Such a classic. You can watch alone, even better on Halloween! Saw: This one is a hoot to watch in the dark with friends. If you are brave, watch it alone. The Shining: Great movie. Unless you have a history of isolation or blizzards, not that scary to watch alone. Alien: Love this movie. Go ahead and watch it alone! The Green Room: Good film, but even watching alone is not that scary Raw: More unnerving and disgusting than scary. Not that different watching alone. It Follows: 1st-person POV cameras (similar to the Pale Lady in Scary Stories To Tell In the Dark) make it uncomfortable and eerie to watch alone in the dark. A Nightmare On Elm Street: I guess I'm sick and twisted lol. Not that scary but great slasher flick. IT: I would watch it alone with surround sound! The Babadook: Ain't that scary even watching alone. Ok movie The Strangers: If you're not into home invasion-type suspense, do not watch this alone. V/H/S/2: not that bad watching alone. If you're brave, watch it alone at night. Drag Me To Hell: Please. Go ahead and watch it alone at night. You'll see it's not that bad Funny Games: Same as above Paranormal Activity: If I lived in a big house by myself, I would not watch this alone. The Conjuring: I would watch it alone with surround sound, especially because of the Warner Bros. opening. It does send a chill but love it! Anything within The Conjuring universe I always watch. REC: After seeing Quarantine, still nothing scary about it. The Grudge: Great movie: tolerable enough to watch alone...in the day The Ring: First time I saw this movie back in middle school, I covered my tv with a blanket for a week and stayed in well-lit rooms. I did not dare watch this movie alone until 2009. Even the japanese original is scary. The VVitch: Creepy but not that scary to watch alone Hereditary: had more shocks but still scary. If you're a fan of horror, not so bad to watch alone. The Blair Witch Project: Scared me when I was 9 years old. I still would not watch alone in the dark. The Exorcist: Hell yeah! I'll surround sound my living room and watch this alone at night on Halloween Eve. Love this movie! I still re-watch this!

I saw my first horror movie when I was 7 (Halloween)...sister rented it for me as a joke, when she was "babysitting" me. I watched it by myself, while she studied for a test, and loved it. I'm 53 now, and have always preferred watching horror movies alone. My wife won't watch anything remotely scary / gory with me.
Well, my parents didn't enjoy horror films, my wife doesn't enjoy horror films, my oldest kid is still to young for horror films, my friends have other hobbies that we prefer to spend time with when we do get together... so, despite having seen most of these, I'm pretty confident that I watched each one of them alone, at least the first time I watched them.

Back when my brother was going steady with his second girlfriend, they watched _The Blair Witch Project._ That was a smart decision, as I don’t think either of them could do it alone.
1. Saw that episode literally yesterday. 2. I thought Cujo was going to be on the list. 3. Never have and probably never will watch or read Cujo. I already know enough from snippets from pop culture.
"Dark Skies" is one of my favorite underrated gems, it's a master class in "less is more", you only see the aliens a few times and the first time is pretty deep into the movie. It builds the suspense for maximum payoff.
I think part of it was that The Grudge was constant suspense. Don't get me wrong, The Ring is very entertaining and a good eerie mystery, but The Grudge is RELENTLESSLY creepy and ruins the places you usually go for comfort. That bed scene? Oh my gosh, I literally couldn't sleep after watching the movie because there was no way I was putting my legs under a blanket without imagining Kayako underneath with her wide eyes and guttural groan.
I remember going to see The Grudge when it came out. To this day it is the most terrifying theater movie experience I've ever had. It took me a while to get over it.
Well, I'm almost 30, have lots of friends, a big family and a fiancée. And I've seen 28 of these films several times alone. Partly because sometimes I just want to be alone when I enjoy movies. And I suffered no harm.
Kathy Bates is my hero!! She was on Dr. Phil a year or so ago and I guess he’s a huge fan of hers so he asked her how she can act like a villain so well and she said that she watches his shows and takes notes of his guests-especially the ones that are worse than others….hahaha!! Green Room isn’t very horror-like but if no one hasn’t seen it omg YOU HAVE TO WATCH IT SOON!!! Holy hell!! Sir Patrick Stewart is so good at the villain role and I NEVER thought I’d EVER say that!! He’s another one of my heroes and I absolutely LOVE him but in this movie HE IS SO DAMN SAVAGE!!! Holy sh*t!! Plus it has Anton Yelchin in it and my god we lost such a brilliant actor!!! Everything he touched was gold and this movie is the proof of that statement-it really sucks he lost his life because he was destined to be another great!! RIP Anton Yelchin
I remember the first time I watched The Grudge with my friends (I was 14). That night I couldn't sleep as my body was trembling. Up to now this is the scariest movie ever. I'll never ever watch this alone.
The only complete series of horror movies I have watched. is 'The Nightmare on Elm Street'...I liked them so much I have Freddy Krueger tattooed on my back looking like he's breaking out of my skin. When I got it my wife said: Now I have to wake up to 2 horrors every morning...lol.
Ju-On scared the hell out of me! I was so scared to sleep by myself and asked my mom to sleep in the same bed. I'm 29 years old and still can't watch it by myself.
I've always thought that the original Elm Street is the best idea for a horror movie that anyone has EVER had. As a child of the 80's, it will haunt me forever!
The creepiest horror movies that I've seen are Japanese versions of The Ring and The Grudge. I couldn’t sleep properly for 2 weeks straight afterwards and even avoided watching horror altogether for 6 years or so. I was so traumatized. 😂
I watched the babadook with a big group of friends crackin jokes the whole time, and I was still lookin at the dark corners of my house before I went to bed. The whole movie just feels like a nightmare
At age 15, I made the grave mistake of watching The Ring home alone at night. I didn't sleep for 7 days and developed an intense fear of shut off screens and large mirrors.
The fact it's based (loosely) on a true story made it creepier. A lady heard noises coming from behind her mirror but only saw her medicine cabinet. At night she could hear people walking through her apartment and voices in the walls. The police were called there more than once but found nothing so put her "ramblings" down to her being a crazy old lady. When a neighbour called them for a welfare check because she hadn't been seen (she'd often rattle people's doors to make sure they were locked. If they weren't, she'd go inside their apartment and berate them for leaving their door unlocked), she was found dead. Turned out there were tunnels in the walls where people would shortcut through, drug dealers would do their deals etc. One of those tunnels were directly behind her medicine cabinet which was actually a false front. The cabinet could be pushed/pulled in or out for anyone to come through. Poor ol' girl.
I’ve not seen Talk To Me, Terrifier 2, Green Room, Raw, The Strangers, V/H/S/ 2, seen bits of the original Funny Games, Not seen REC and The Witch either. I don’t get scared by horror films I’ve not seen one in cinemas for nearly 5 years, I rarely watch them now.
The only 2 movies I've ever seen that scared me so badly that I couldn't sleep afterwards were the Exorcist & the Ring. I'm a horror fan & have seen a lot of horror movies.
Thank you for the update, WatchMojo..!! The scariest of all, although quite a lot of people will disagree it was not a 'movie', but a 'music video'.. Michael Jackson's Thriller is my pick. That was the scariest thing I have ever watched back in the early 80s, and I was not scared of any other horror movies since then.
I watched The Ring alone for the first time when I was 8. It messed me up so bad I couldn't go to the pool alone because I thought Samara would show up.
If you stop and think about it,The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has very little blood in it, especially compared to other slasher films. The bloodiest part is when Grampa is trying to hit Sally in the head with the hammer.
im a fan of horror movies so watching alone is not that hard but sometimes there are some japanese/asian horror movies that i need to turn on my lights while watching alone.
19:25 the conjuring: seriously whoever made this list have you guys actually seen this movie? Annabelle is only in the opening scene she’s not the antagonist for the whole movie. You’re saying the main family in the movie was haunted by the doll which isn’t true, it was Bathsheba haunting them
I'm shocked that you didn't put Skinamarink on this list. That movie took me THREE sittings just to get through! It centers around two young children who wake up in the middle of the night to find their father is missing, and all the doors and windows to the house suddenly disappear, meanwhile, there's a demonic entity toying with them the whole time.
I agree the exorcist shouldn’t be watched alone as you need someone to wake you up over how painfully boring it is. Also Ju-on (the original grudge) is far more scarier than the US grudge
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is my top favorite horror film - perfectly shot and edited, no supernatural themes, near seamless blend of narrative and pseudo-documentary, and just intense and scary as hell! Completely blew my mind the first time I wanted it!
I haven't watched Lights Out, but I have suffered from sleep paralysis so now I need to see it. The first Paranormal Activity makes me think of the sleep paralysis experience also.
A nightmare on elm street was the first horror movie that i watched alone and it scared the hell out of me because I was 8 yrs old. It's been my favorite ever since. 🐐
From left to right in photo and how to avoid the problem: 1) Don’t watch VHS tapes (The Ring) 2) Do not be promiscuous (It Follows) 3) Don’t go in the woods with symbols (The Blair Witch Project) You avoid these things, you’ll be OK. Later I’ll watch this video in its entirety. Maybe make a list hahaha
@@SpamEggSausage Did you even watch the movie? She has sex with first guy (passes the entity), the neighbor, and guys on a boat. Also the kid at the end. You must also be down a peg.
I've watched Most of the Movies (Specifically, "Halloween" (All of them), "The Shining", "It Follows", "A Nightmare on Elm Street" (All of Them), "It" (1991 Version with Tim Curry), "The Babadook", "Drag Me to Hell", "Paranormal Activity" (From the First One to "Marked Ones" as the time of this Comment), "The Conjuring",). But I've also watched other Famous Horror Movies such as Alfred Hitchcock's 1960. "Psycho" (And all the Remakes of "Psycho"), "Jaws" (And all its Sequels/Remakes). I also watched all the "Carrie" Movies, all the "Halloween" Movies, all the "Friday the 13th" Movies, all the "Poltergeist" Movies, all the "A Nightmare on Elm Street" Movies, all the "Candyman" Movies, all the "Scream" Movies (From the First One to "Scream 4" as the time of this Comment), all the "I Know What You Did Last Summer" Movies, all the "Final Destination" Movies, all the "Scary " Movies, the "When a Stranger Calls" (2006), the "Drag Me to Hell" Movie, all the "Insidious" Movies (Just the first two at the time of this comment), all the "The Conjuring" Movies (Just the first at the time of this comment), and the "Annabelle" Movie. I watched all those movies by myself without getting scared once. I might have flinched for a second or two, but I was never scared while watching those movies. I also plan to watch all the Movies in the Franchises I mentioned and plenty more of them, such as the Other, "Insidious" Movies, the other "The Conjuring" Movies, the other "Robert the Doll" Movies, the other "Annabelle" (Doll) Movies, the "Get Out" Movie, the 2017 "It" Movie, the "Slenderman" Movies, the other "The Nun" Movies, the "Truth Or Dare" Movie, the "Brightburn" Movie, the "La Llorona" Movie, the "Halloween Kills" Movie, the 2022 and 2023 "Scream" Movie, and the "Knock at the Cabin" Movie all by myself. Although if I am being honest, I also watched the First "Hellraiser" Movie, and while I very much survived (Meaning I did not get scared from watching it) I got turned off watching it. The Same was true for the "Child's Play" Movie, but not until after watching the one where Tiffany was introduced. They both just got to be a bit more intense then I was expecting. But at no point while watching any of the aforementioned movies was I Scared.
A movie that I never see on lists like this is 1408. I grew up on horror movies, and I'm usually pretty desensitized to them. But no movie has EVER scared me more as an adult than 1408!
@@ICONICPARIS Or every time he sees one of the ghosts that killed themselves. Or when he sees himself in the other building across the street. I could keep going...
i watched The silence of the lambs, The texas chainsaw massacre, Misery, Halloween, Saw, Alien, The shining, It follows, A nightmare on Elm Street, It, The Babadook, The strangers 1 and 2, VHS 2, Paranormal activity, Rec, The grudge, The ring and The blair witch project alone and none of these movies scared me. but i didn't like the ending of The strangers 2 ending and i didn't like one part of VHS 2 because the dog dies. i grew up watching horror movies since i was 4 or 5 and the first horror movie i watched at that age was Child's play 2, i remember Chucky walking towards the teacher with a yardstick and killing her.
"If blood makes you queasy, good luck with this one"?? The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of the least bloody movies ever. There's virtually none at all.
There is a scene in Sinister where that face appears in the bushes below the tree where the family was hung. I saw that movie in theaters, and when I got back to my place that night, I sprinted past the bushes by the walkway, ya know, just in case 😂
If Pheobe narrates the video, it's a video to watch until the end and then to watch it again. The Night House is a movie I wouldn't recommend to watch alone. It was the first movie to scare me in a really long time, and it forced me to keep attention to my surroundings whenever I'm by myself
I'm from Maryland and yes weird things happen in those woods. I'm surprised Amityville Horror 2005 didn't make this list. My room was in a basement at the time n I was disturbed!
Terrifier 1 and 2 are both great movies. Why? because they don't use CGI unlike most nowadays slasher horrors (Well, on the gory parts anyway.). And it kind of brings you back to the 80s horror era.
I was walking home from work in Phoenix in 1984. Someday I drove, or biked, or walked. That day it was well over 100 as I walked past a theater that had Nightmare on Elm Street playing. Wanting to cool off and with no work tomorrow figured why not catch a movie? I was scared shitless! I had not heard about it whatsoever. As I kid I went to a drive in with my family. Some Dracula flick. But I had to close my eyes and plug my ears I was so scared. I almost did that again as a 21 year old guy when Freddie became real. A true classic. Just like me 😊
While Akira Toriyama did not play a much of a role in film, what he did for anime really helped open the door for Studio Ghibli to have the impact it has in the west. Thus warranting at least his name being shown at the end with all the others.

@@nelliesilvers1210 oh man that’s horrible. The cops really should have looked harder
Misery is a classic, such a great flick, and it is an even better book.
Thank you Watch Mojo for the warning but believe me I'm gonna watch them alone
I’ve not seen Talk To Me, Terrifier 2, Green Room, Raw, The Strangers, V/H/S/ 2, seen bits of the original Funny Games, Not seen REC and The Witch either. I don’t get scared by horror films I’ve not seen one in cinemas for nearly 5 years, I rarely watch them now.
The only 2 movies I've ever seen that scared me so badly that I couldn't sleep afterwards were the Exorcist & the Ring. I'm a horror fan & have seen a lot of horror movies.
There’s nothing like reading ‘Misery’ and experiencing how terrifying it is.
I watched Wolf Creek alone. That one stayed with me 😮
Thank you for the update, WatchMojo..!!
Imo I would put Sinister on here
Yes indeed and within the top 5
I agree
I couldn't watch any of these movies alone. I watched 5 minutes of 'Frozen,' alone, and had to hide with my head under the covers.
Chilling wasn't it.

@@BahamutThedragon83-iz6cr Good one!! 🤣
I'm curious if you're making a joke about the Disney film or talking about the ski lift film
Oh God the Exorcist...
I've been camping in the woods many times over the years , and I can confirm that IT is very scary at night there!
So I can relate to how the three actors felt while filming "The Blair Witch Project"!
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is my top favorite horror film - perfectly shot and edited, no supernatural themes, near seamless blend of narrative and pseudo-documentary, and just intense and scary as hell! Completely blew my mind the first time I wanted it!
‘Lights Out!’ Anyone who has experienced sleep paralysis will understand why this movie can be so terrifying!
I haven't watched Lights Out, but I have suffered from sleep paralysis so now I need to see it. The first Paranormal Activity makes me think of the sleep paralysis experience also.
I suffer from sleep paralysis it's horrible
Showgirls should have been on the lost, absolutely terrifying.
The "Autopsy of Jane Doe" should be on this list.
I'd add Mirrors. I watched it like 10 years ago and I still get uncomfortable around mirrors sometimes
Watching horror movies alone is great :).
Can't believe The Entity didn't make this list. That is one film you should never watch alone. Far scarier then some on this list.
A nightmare on elm street was the first horror movie that i watched alone and it scared the hell out of me because I was 8 yrs old. It's been my favorite ever since. 🐐
Omg I watched it before I went to sleep and I actually did have a nightmare.
For me it was Child's Play. I saw it when I was 7. I was freaked out about dolls for a while. I F'n love the first 4 Chucky movies though classic.
From left to right in photo and how to avoid the problem:
1) Don’t watch VHS tapes (The Ring)
2) Do not be promiscuous (It Follows)
3) Don’t go in the woods with symbols (The Blair Witch Project)
You avoid these things, you’ll be OK.
Later I’ll watch this video in its entirety.
Maybe make a list hahaha
How to survive horror movies 101: Watch Scream, take notes, problem solved
Good thing I'm going to space alone
@@AlejandroLopez-ib2jx lmaooo
you consider having sex once promiscuous??
@@SpamEggSausage Did you even watch the movie? She has sex with first guy (passes the entity), the neighbor, and guys on a boat. Also the kid at the end. You must also be down a peg.
Most of these are fun to watch alone. Definitely have friends with Blair Witch so you can mock it together. Most over rated horror ever.
Totally agree. Especially when he thought it wasn't real and was in the post office. OMG
@@ICONICPARIS Or every time he sees one of the ghosts that killed themselves. Or when he sees himself in the other building across the street. I could keep going...
The grudge is so scary that I was so scared to sleep under the covers
I usually watch horror movies by myself. What can I say................I like to live dangerously.
Psychological horror movies are scarier than movies that uses CGI. CGI keep using jumpscares that in the end gets cliché which gets boring.
The Collection is a movie u don’t want to watch alone. I did and soon regretting it
When Freddy chases sis in the beginning is always HILARIOUS
out of this list, I saw 10 of them by myself like Alien, Silence of the Lambs, It, and The Exorcist
Horror movies are the only movies that even keep me interested anymore unless you’re Everything everywhere all at once. That’s an outlier lol
Shocked that "Midsommar" and "Get Out" didn't make the list. Had I done this list as a kid, "It Lives" would have made it!
The Ritual on Netflix is one of the best horror movies I've ever seen. Definitely not one to watch alone
The one and only movie I ever watched alone that affected me in a way that was disturbing was The Wall.
Well I actually seen most of these movies solo and find the ending of the first ‘Descent’ most disturbing!
Then watch Descent 2...I loved it!
#22 John Kramer is SO SMARTER THAN Hannibal Lector!!!
#5 Oh my Lord!!! That movie made me have nightmares for the FIRST TIME IN YEARS!!!
Very nice
i watched The silence of the lambs, The texas chainsaw massacre, Misery, Halloween, Saw, Alien, The shining, It follows, A nightmare on Elm Street, It, The Babadook, The strangers 1 and 2, VHS 2, Paranormal activity, Rec, The grudge, The ring and The blair witch project alone and none of these movies scared me. but i didn't like the ending of The strangers 2 ending and i didn't like one part of VHS 2 because the dog dies. i grew up watching horror movies since i was 4 or 5 and the first horror movie i watched at that age was Child's play 2, i remember Chucky walking towards the teacher with a yardstick and killing her.
I know I'm not the only one with this opinion. How did Paranormal Activity become a franchise?!? Even the first movie sucks!
Because it's cheap to make and people buy tickets despite knowing it won't be that great.
I’ve watched most of these alone..
Me too
Me too
"If blood makes you queasy, good luck with this one"?? The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of the least bloody movies ever. There's virtually none at all.
Im still traumatized from the Ring
Took a bunch of friends to see an anniversary edition of "Alien" in 2003 & I was 'lectured' excessively after the movie
I made that BIG mistake of watching paranormal activity alone, I'd rather face Freddy, jason, and myers together, then face Katie, seriously. ☹️
why? EVERYTHING was easy to explain
There is a scene in Sinister where that face appears in the bushes below the tree where the family was hung. I saw that movie in theaters, and when I got back to my place that night, I sprinted past the bushes by the walkway, ya know, just in case 😂
I've watched half of these movies alone... Was looking for a jumpscare from behind... But Nope....Ghosts were too shy.. 😢😢
I can't stop binge watching these videos! 'The Exorcist' will always be the scariest for me
Do you have any other favorite horror movies that send shivers down your spine?
U forgot Amityvillle horror & Poltergeist & although it’s not a horror movie Unhinged is very scary
The Grudge definitely gives me a jump scare
Correction these are movies you should watch all the time alone or with friends.
If Pheobe narrates the video, it's a video to watch until the end and then to watch it again.
The Night House is a movie I wouldn't recommend to watch alone. It was the first movie to scare me in a really long time, and it forced me to keep attention to my surroundings whenever I'm by myself
I watched The Grudge by myself... in an empty movie theater. Thank God it was an early show.
The number one movie that you shouldn't watch alone, "The Exorcist (1973)" the movie makes my family members, me wanna run
Just like me 😊
did you really say something about the sight of blood in the first Chainsaw Massacre film? the notably NOT GORY one???
Eden Lake comes to mind as well. But, good list. It had some of my favorite movies on it.
I'm watching this to find a movie to watch alone.
the title: 30 horror movies you shouldn't watch alone
Me: having watched all these by myself ✌🏼
Sinister with Ethan Hawke is a movie I Won’t watch alone
Brilliant one of the scariest films iv ever seen
While Akira Toriyama did not play a much of a role in film, what he did for anime really helped open the door for Studio Ghibli to have the impact it has in the west. Thus warranting at least his name being shown at the end with all the others.
