All of my feeders hang high above the ground and there are baffles on the poles. One night I saw a mama raccoon with 4 babies try to climb the feeder pole to get to the hummingbird feeder. Nothing they tried worked. Then, after what looked like mom giving directions to the babies, she crouched at the bottom of the pole and one by one her babies tried to climb on top of each other! They couldn't get the last one up, but even if they had, they wouldn't have been able to reach the feeder. Clever, though! I couldn't take photos, and I don't have a night cam.
At the end of June, drought drove a scrawny raccoon to raid our various bird feeders at night, swiping one.of 'em and damaging several others. I had considered shooting the masked marauder but didn't want to risk killing a mom. Therefore, I chose to instead move the raccoon-accessible feeders into our garage at night, as well as provide cat kibbles and clean water to help the critter survive this lean period. The other night, my suspicions were confirmed when I saw her on the security camera with five kits--FIVE!
Is there a way to stop this ? Does ultrasonic sound plug-in critter repellent work? Or apple cider vinegar on the steps ? I’m trying to figure out a way without hurting any wildlife, to not have to bring the hummingbird feeders in every night.
I had trouble with bears! I looked out one time during the day and saw a juvenile black bear standing up on his hind feet, holding my bottle-type feeder in both front paws and just pouring the nectar into his mouth. They raided my seed feeders too. I called the Div. of Wildlife and learned how to hang my feeders so the bears couldn't get to them.
@@pelicanlee6123 The DOW said to find two trees at least 20 ft apart, and run a strong wire between them at least 10 ft off the ground. Hang feeder(s) in the middle. I strung 300 lb.-test aircraft wire (from Home Depot) between two Douglas Firs. I also improvised a pully system at one end so I could lower the wire & feeders down for refilling. It worked really well.
We had the exact same problem back in May/June and we were waking up to find our hummingbird feeder completely empty every morning. We couldn’t figure out why that was happening so we thought it was leaking and we bought a new hummingbird feeder. However, the exact same thing happened. So we bought a Nest Camera and put it on our porch only to catch the raccoon and we scared it away for good. We have never had this problem before this year.
@@matthewtorok-smith1967 LOL. Actually ours was being raided by a racoon as well. We thought at first maybe BATS, so we set up the trail cam and sure enough it was a coon... but with everything else going on(badly) in the USA, might as well blame potus since he screwed up everything else.
I had a vase full of water and it had marbles in the bottom my house cat drinks from this, the marbles were pulled out of the bottom thought my cat did this but the cat was in the house and I heard that vase being turned over. Well now I realize it was a racoon.
Who was that masked bandit?! ;)
Smart Critters. He could'nt resist to a such sweet nectar.
Love how their back paws turn completely round to help them climb down.
I hadn't noticed that until I read your comment. Isn't evolution amazing! 😍

I thought raccoons were cute until they started breaking my feeders and hangers in half. Now, it's shoot to kill.
