Fred is coming along great. Take a pocket full of treats with you and give him one when he does good. If he is like my dog he will come back as fast as he goes out to get that treat. Training is about reinforcing good behavior and lightly punishing mistakes. Maybe scolding is a better term. When Fred breaks tell him about it when he holds let him know he did good after awhile it is habit and you will only have to remind him once in awhile. he is doing great with gunshots just keep easing him into it next step is more than one shot then a volley of 3 or 4 guns like a normal blind hunt. After the first real hunt and he finds out guns going off means he gets to fetch feathers the game is on.

Much better. If u wanna teach him to stay with out breaking u gotta get him to stay with out the dummy first then once he does that u can throw the dummy and u or your kids can go it. Once he sits calm after u throw the dummy then let him get it then u or your kids get the next few bumpers and if he's calm he can get one. It teaches him that he's not going after every bumper and he need to wait and stay calm if he wants to get one

I love the DT Systems E-Collar, we use the R.A.P.T series, its pretty cool because the remote can stay on your hand while you shoot a gun so you don't have to fumble around for it, also all waterproof and the remote floats (because you know at some point its gonna fall in the marsh). Don't worry that Fred doesn't have one yet, he should learn all the skills (even being steady) without an e-collar, the collar should only be used to REINFORCE a command, not teach it. To teach steadiness now you can take a thin rope and loop it through a ring on his collar and hold onto the rope instead of holding his collar, then just let go of one end of the rope when you send him so it just slides out when he goes, that way he doesn't know when your actually holding him back. When he does try to break pull back on the rope pretty good and give a firm "no", it will be a negative reinforcement and he should get the idea pretty quick. Hopefully that all makes sense. He's looking awesome!

Bobby, a tip I got when I was first training my dog was to not use the shock collar until the dog knows what to do and what not to do, so to get him to stay use a lead like 3 foot or so, and release him when the lead has slack.

Hey Bobby, I’d recommend giving Fred a heads up in order to let him know a bumper or bird is about to fall. It also lets him know a shot is about to go off. It’s as simple as saying “watch” or “mark” before throwing or launching a bumper. It’s also a great way to remind young dogs that actual birds are about to fall. When birds are cupped up right before telling the guys to kill them, tell ole Fred “mark” or “watch” just before shooting and you’ll see how laser focused he becomes. It’s great for young/mature dogs alike.

One of my dogs was named storm about 20 years ago. She was an amateur field champion and master hunter (AFC, MH). She also was very small just like his storm. I was wondering how old his storm is? She definitely has what it takes. I've literally had hundreds of labs over the years and trained a lot more but she's a good one. You know even back as early as the 70s and 80s a person could get any Labrador and they would have so much natural ability in them that you basically could teach them their name and obedience train them and introduced to the gun and they will do all the rest. Now days it's not the same with people not concentrating on the old traditional Labrador traits. There are way too many backyard breeders that have no idea about canine genetics or even what to look for in a dog whether it be physical or mental ability! Anyway those days are gone! When you start hunting upland birds with your dog and I'm sure you probably will sometimes you will probably see him do something in his very young and inexperienced hunting career do something that absolutely amazes you for the amount of training he has had. Also you need to get some grit and put it in with your pigeons to eat or they will die. Just tiny little stones or crushed see shells or something similar.

I have an DT Systems launcher and I have blank 22 shells. Havent used it yet but my puppy is starting to get better at retrieving!
Edit: Also, racks and stuff for the sxs would be a good choice in my opinion. I've used a few on our Polaris and they seem to work pretty well, we have only a single bench seat on ours or whatever it sits 2-3 not 4-6 like yours.
And for getting him used to gunfire just bring him out and shoot some targets with the 22 or something it gets him used to hearing the noise then he will gradually get use to shotguns. .22 shorts make very little to no sound at all if he is really spooky to gunshot.

  • @nandor3596

I just got a cap gun and would pop it off on occasion around the house or yard. You should start working with him on retrieving the bird to your hand, because that habit is so hard to break but is super useful if you are shooting limits of birds. Kind of gets annoying to bend over all day and pick up your birds, plus its a cool hunting party trick!

I am on year three with my first dog, and there are a couple things that a couple old timers told me that I think apply to any gun dog - sage wisdom and not rocket science.
1.) Go slow with gun training - more than one guy told me put your dog 100 yards away and just work your way in. It's better to be too cautious, because if you go too hard to fast - you may never get them back. Even if they are showing progress, it's better to go slow rather than accidentally going over board. With every loud bang on my dog, I started 100 yards out and worked in - from a .22 to .410 to 20g and then 12g - and every time there was a bang - there was immediately something for her to do with a dummy, bumper or whatever. Honestly I probably went overboard, but when I got done - when there is a gun shot, my dog was bristling with only one thing on her mind "where is the retrieve".
2.) Use a check cord - 100% of the time, every time. This allows you to have control of your dog - while not applying pressure like a shock collar would. Keeping everything fun is key when they are young.
3.) When they are young, it's all about fun - if they break some rules, it's not the end of the world - you want your dog to LOVE going for that retrieve. Eventually you will do force fetch and such - that will clean stuff up.
4.) Love the channel and Fred is going to be a beast - just take it slow :)

Eric's Outdoors whoa is a command used for pointing dogs that tells them to stay on point and not flush the bird until you are in position. Not for waterfowl. He can teach him to whoa if when he trains for upland.

Samuel Leighton yes that is 100% true, but it also works the same way as stay. It's up to bobby lol. I am just trying to help out

Samuel Leighton but whoa also works to not let the dog bust when a duck or goose falls.

@@ericsoutdoors8845 Dogs don't know what a word means till they are taught what they are expected to do for a word. I use hold for her to stay put till release. Using the same command and enforcing it every time gets the dog knowing how to please you, and that's what the good ones want to do.

Sign up for a site called “ the retriever trainer” I have trained two MH and my girl is just on the verge of qualifying all ages in field trials using this program. It’s the best $50 a year you will ever spend on your dog. Also please don’t use a shock collar until you have force fetched and collar conditioned your dog properly. If they don’t understand the pressure / correction, you can ruin your dogs drive quickly.

    Henry
The reason your dog is running out before it is sent. Is simple to sort. When you throw out the dummy. Your job is to watch the dog for the slightest movement and correct it.. NOT the where the dummy is going.. The dogs job is to watch where the dummy is going. Trust the dog.
