Might be about doing drugs/drinking and then getting addicted, but that's a good theory, too.
I think when he says "the devil" he's referring to addiction. He even said "the only thing that makes it any better is a drink, or a pill, or a chemical" so he was clearly self medicating to cope with his depression.
