Fun fact: You can actually intimidate the shopkeepers in this game into lowering their prices.
All you have to do is press A + B on controller 2. HOWEVER your "arrow strength" must be higher than the number of the level the shop is in. If it isn't, the shopkeeper will get very angry and RAISE his prices instead.

The fact that Sakurai has said he has no plans to continue the series and that Uprising is very unlikely to get a switch port depresses me immensely.

The difficulty of this game starting off hard and getting easier as you progress is a strange choice, and I'd argue it's maybe not the best choice, but in a weird way it makes sense narratively. You start off as a prisoner of the Underworld trying to escape it, and ultimately you end up in Sky World (the land of the angels and your home turf).

Back when I played this, at first I didn't realize that the flying nose enemies were flying noses, so my mind interpreted them as these surreal and bizarre alien creatures. Then suddenly it clicked, I realized that they were noses, and I went "no, wait, go back to be being bizarre aliens, that was cool", but I couldn't unsee the noses. :(

Character designer here! On the topic of CG and replacing actors, that's frankly impossible. Even in the old days of 2D Disney animation, they frequently based their character designs on their voice actors to help give it a more compelling performance, and help the voice actors connect with their character better when they saw themselves in the role. (As for back as Peter Pan to as recently as Incredibles) Designers need reference from actors, because at the end of the day, animators are just actors with a pencil/computer mouse.
I'd say the issue lies more in the lack of acceptance of animation as anything but a kid's medium, and the reluctance on the part of Hollywood to try anything new and only resurrect old safe franchises. But I'm also a biased animation-type fella, so. 🤷

I think a distinction should be made between "hard" and "cheap" particularly when it comes to retro games. This is definitely on the cheap side. The enemies are semi random in their movements and there's often almost unavoidable hits unless you know the specific spawn points and patterns so you can dodge. Enemies also spawn on you which is a huge bullshit move. I have absolutely no problem with Vinny rewinding to get through the game. He's rewound in "fairer" games to get through them let alone one that's constantly pulling crap on him like this.

I just think he doesn't have the same patience (or lack of other options) to put up with an unforgiving game like this as he was when he was a kid.
I wasn't good at Wizards & Warriors as a kid, or Fester's Quest, but they were cool games and I'd manage to get maybe halfway through sometimes, and I'd enjoy it, but it also greatly frustrated me.
As an adult, I'm better at games, and I think I have more patience now, but not for some of these really unforgiving games, I don't think I have that in me anymore, and I can see why Vinny doesn't, even though I don't agree that it's the game that's unfair.
Kid Icarus is more lenient than a lot of unforgiving games, given the passwords and being able to build up your stats, but then I look at stuff like Ninja Gaiden and I know that's a lot harder than Batman or Gremlins 2, games I love (which I can't 'beat' without savestates and rewinds) and I can't see myself enjoying it. Metroid and Zelda are more my speed now.
Maybe it's age, but I'm a lot better at other games I sucked at as a kid instead, so there's that.

I had this game on Virtual Console because it was a game I always missed out on as a kid (we had the entire Super Mario Bros. trilogy, Dr. Mario, Tetris, Metroid, Mega Man 2 and 3, and a few other games for our NES - Kid Icarus was just the one big one at the time I felt I was missing out on). I was frustrated because it was stupidly easy to accidentally press "duck" on the fall-through platforms in those first couple of vertical levels; I made it all the way to the dungeon a couple of times by rushing, but was then immediately stomped by the dungeon enemies right away and never even got to see an Egg Plant Wizard for myself.

Its kinda late but: 8:22 these aren't scummy controls that's because you were standing on ice, yes this game has ice physics, if you are standing on ice you will slide a little and while moving if you jump your momentum in the air gets locked until you jump reaches the highest point.
So these aren't scummy controlls they're intended to be this way if you stand on ice.
You can bypass this behavior of the controls on ice if you don't move just jump and in the air move in the direction you need to go and if you land on ice again don't move and if you don't slide anymore repeat.

the Jar Jar CGI (along with the menagerie of Lucas digital creature additions) are distracting....but not on the same level...because even though Jar Jar is a "character," he is also practically a set piece, like the other digital creatures. Thank heaven that Jar Jar isn't an attempt to recreate a live actor...or ANYthing living. Carrie Fisher and Peter Cushing are different. There presence and role has immense implications and they are tied to their live actors. Recreating them will always be a different bag than making a funny flop alien.

Some would clear saves, some wouldn't bother doing it much, possibly because the person in charge of doing it (possibly some part timing teen) wasn't made to do it.

Is it just me that can't really see the potential in Kid Icarus?
I admittedly never played it myself and haven't seen much footage of it other than the very beginning either so I don't know if it just gets something more unique later on so correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it basically a normal 2D platformer with a jump and short range projectile?
The only slightly unique feature that I can tell is the screen wrap around.
As I mentioned I've seen very little but I honestly don't even think the overall design seem particularly iconic like enemies, surroundings, items and such.
So when the gameplay is basic and there's not much that set it apart esthetically then why would anyone want to see them do something new with Kid Icarus?
What's special about it that they could take inspiration from to make a game that hasn't already been made?
