I think that discussion about this topic with those people who may not be as educated as yourself is the way to further understanding. Obviously Ms. Painter knows a whole hell of a lot more than I do for instance. That doesn’t mean that I have no reason for agreeing or disagreeing with her or anyone else, because of my limited understanding, since there are plenty of other people speaking on this topic with contradictory viewpoints. I also always thought that saying white people are "responsible" for slavery is a bit farfetched as well. Most everyone in the world had some form of slave labour economy. There was a free market slave trading economy. No one is going to like hearing this but it needs to be said -- the Moors are the ones who put the slaves up for sale on the free market in the first place, Europeans merely purchased them. What I would ask then, is if the people selling slaves are more or less responsible than the people purchasing them. I would argue they're equally, if not more responsible.
The other question I would ask is, how would these slaves that are up for sale/auction have been treated in Africa (as their caste) when compared to their new home in America? Probably not very well! Does "race" exist? Well, if an AI, without training, can figure it out, it seems to have an objective existence. If a scientist can take bones and accurately predict the race of someone, then it exists. Same with sex. To hyper-focus on the fuzzy boundaries means you are ignoring the fact that reality is largely full of fuzzy boundaries, in the centre of which are real things like bears. I think that discussion about this topic with those people who may not be as educated as yourself is the way to further understanding. Obviously Ms. Painter knows a whole hell of a lot more than I do for instance. I don't disagree with the crux of this statement: I don't accept "white" for a racial designation. I also always thought that saying white people are "responsible" for slavery is a bit farfetched as well. Most everyone in the world had some form of slave labour economy. There was a free market slave trading economy. No one is going to like hearing this but it needs to be said -- the Moors are the ones who put the slaves up for sale on the free market in the first place, Europeans merely purchased them. What I would ask then, is if the people selling slaves are more or less responsible than the people purchasing them. I would argue they're equally, if not more responsible.
The other question I would ask is, how would these slaves that are up for sale/auction have been treated in Africa (as their caste) when compared to their new home in America? Probably not very well! Does "race" exist? Well, if an AI, without training, can figure it out, it seems to have an objective existence. If a scientist can take bones and accurately predict the race of someone, then it exists. Same with sex.
To hyper-focus on the fuzzy boundaries means you are ignoring the fact that reality is largely full of fuzzy boundaries, in the centre of which are real things like bears. You can just as easily argue that bears do not exist, because species boundaries are fuzzy, and I will argue that they do, and call you hypocrite as you run from a bear, because you *know* it is not a dog.

If you think race is anything other than the result of environmental adaptation, and the names we give them, you don't have a clue.
Now if you want to say there are significant cultural differences between groups of people that lived in different parts of the world for a long time, and so, different looking groups behave differently I'd say, you're right.....but the differences are purely cultural....their appearance is irrelevant.
