A'lot of these "experts" show up to these conventions and always do a half ass job with their demos. This guy takes his time and is awesome. Definite strokes, details, its all there. More of this artist, please.

I love how he leaves lines out on purpose and he let's your eyes figure it out. Whilce is truly the best comic book artist I think. While Jim Lee is more realistic, Whilce just has more of a comic feel to it.

This man got me into comics. Long ago when you could buy comics in a grocery store. I saw his work in Uncanny X-Men and I was hooked from then on. Thank You Mr. Portacio. You opens up a whole new world for me.

As an artist myself, I can tell you what you don't see here. You don't see the years and untold hours of him drawing clothes, shoes, buildings, spheres, cubes, perspective, lighting work, etc. It really takes a ton of practice to work on lighting and how things reflect, absorb, etc. Once you have a solid foundation and learn the rules...you can bend the rules, form your style. The quick work he does here is muscle memory. Visualization was complete before the artwork started as well.

god i wish i could understand comic style shading with black. I get it's shadow, but it's like weirdly contrasted dark shadow. Any time i try to do it it just looks wrong. It seems like a lot of times artists will put shadows where they don't even make sense, just because it looks cool. I think that partially leads to my problem of not understanding it.

    • @EmilyPearsonSpeedpaint

+TXF It's definitely a style choice, but it's a smart one. If you don't feel comfortable with that though, you could always substitute with hatching/cross-hatching

Well, as much information that is out now, there's no need to reinvent the wheel. Resources are crazy now...or should I say access? Growing up, it was studying actual comics, going to the library, it could be expensive and exhausting. Now, you can jump on the net and gather collections of work to study. A good source is (comic art community (.) c-o-m) Tons of comic art to look at and study.
