  • This semi- virtual field trip was created for my KINES 04 Fly Fishing Class. Our classroom and field trip sessions were canceled due to the Covid-19 situation. This film recaps some of the pointers we discussed in class and shows the students on-stream scenarios they would have encountered during our regular scheduled trips.

Totally agree with that parting comment section. I have been rock/ice/mountain climbing for more than 40 years, and now returning to fly fishing which I did as a boy. Other activities can be similar. Getting into the flow puts all your worldly concerns out of mind for at least a while. Have to enjoy the activity so you can get into the flow, but if you can find that something that works for you it is a great thing. For me too, something that gets me outdoors has a special appeal.

A really great fly fishing 101 and a beautiful conclusion about the value of fly fishing and any other activity that engrosses you as much as fly fishing does. Thanks!

That was great. Thank you for sharing these lessons. I've read both your nymphing books cover to cover and they've had a huge impact on my fishing and tying. Penn State students are lucky to have you. All the best and stay safe.

What an informative and inspiring video. I would like to think I am one of those individuals who has been lucky in life to find a hobby which is fly fishing that I love and like to share with others. I have been communicating for over 12 years with fly fishermen all over the US who love the sport as much as I do. I just turned 74 and have been blessed to be in great health and hope to pass my passion for fly fishing on to my grandchildren in the coming years. Thanks for sharing and keep the great video coming!!!

Excellent video. I really like your "scientific" approach to fly fishing. And you are so right that activities like fly fishing and fly tying enable your mind to restore a level of "calm" away from the stresses of everyday life.

Thanks for your wonderful video, George. I live in Melbourne, Australia and love fly fishing. Fortunately, I have a host of trout streams within a 90 minute drive, so get out there every other week during the season. Presently we are restricted to home due to the covid19 crisis. So plenty fly tying and no fishing. I’m sharing your video with a friend who is a beginner because I think it is excellent instruction in stream craft.

I would love to see you fish the small creek that kicked my butt yesterday. I need to remind myself to reset the fish upon approach (bank or water) and give them time to settle every time. Don't rush in and do the countdown. You may only get one cast/drift on some of the water I encountered. You said Mr. Humphreys and that's all I needed to hear. Thanks George!!

Very helpful and well done. Often on videos it’s hard to see the water features that are being described by the fisherman, you were able to clearly show your approach. Thanks so much. Your books are very easy to understand and still present detailed technical information. You have a great communication style.

Hi George, thank you very much for sharing this. When fishing dry-dropper I find I am having to sacrifice using the dry I would like to use (because it, for example, more closely resembles the size and color of what I am seeing on the surface) in favor of a larger, better floating dry from which to hang the nymph. Often using the fly that I want to use results in an abbreviated drift because the dry sinks from the weight of the nymph below. What dry were you using in this video? It looked to be relatively small but was obviously well suited to this water type and what was emerging. Also, do you have a "go-to" leader formula when fishing dry-dropper? I usually use George Harvey's style leader when fishing dries which is optimized for dealing with micro surface currents, but may not be ideal in terms of accuracy or castability when hanging a second fly off the back of the dry. Thanks again, stay healthy and take care, Ethan

What size dry are you using? I found it surprising how much weight a small dry fly can hold up especially in moving water. Maybe an extra one or two wraps of the hackle on your dry fly will help with buoyancy?

actually did land it but the dry fly popped out and ended up snagging fish with nymph. :)

Great advice bud. One thing I tell people is try to move like a heron when walking. You slow the movement down and you catch more fish

Thanks. I've was taught early by my mentor not to false cast more than needed. And when I watch these films I still feel I'm casting too much. I hope you're healthy!
