I recently had the honour of singing Criminal Mind with Gowan at a club I was singing at...it was just a matter of us both being in the same place at the same time! I told him of my first place win in my high school contest with that song and he invited me to sing it with him....it was an unreal experience...and I have to say that he is very impressive and unbelievably talented as both a vocalist and piano player....a moment I will never forget...thanks Larry, you are awesome.

That is why Gowan takes Todd with him when he does his Canadian Mini-Tours while on hiatus. One night in a small 400 seater Todd ripped off a 8 minute solo, that had not only the audience but the band just in awe. Standing ovation from minute one and Gowan and the band just backed off the side of the stage and let him go. Was marvelous to see.

@Chewy Ltd What creates the power in a great band is not the individuals, but the collective when the ensemble becomes bigger than the sums of the parts. And it is the case big time with Styx, whatever the lineup, they are incredible together. It has always been and seems it will always be. Honestly, however great studio musicians can be, they are merceneries, so they can never compete on that level with a solid band that grows together.
And if we want to get technical, yes, the guitar is interesting.. but the real power comes from the back up vocals. Wow, chills down the spine.

Before joining Styx in 1999, Gowan had a long successful track record as a solo artist in Canada, and this song was his biggest hit (from the album STRANGE ANIMAL, 1985). He was personally invited to become a permanent member by Tommy Shaw, who was impressed by his performances as the opening act for the 1997 Styx shows in Montreal, Quebec City, and Vancouver.

From Lawrence Gowan's 1983 album "Strange Animal". Gowan is a classically-trained pianist (the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto). This cut clearly showcases his songwriting brilliance, and at the time was nothing short of a technical masterpiece. The video for "Criminal Mind" also received regular airplay on both MuchMusic and MTV, and was rewarded with numerous awards for the marriage of animation with live footage. This is an enduring version of Styx. Edit: Seen this video 40 times in 2 days now. Addicted.

Interesting story about how they got Gowan. They played Montreal, and let Gowan open (bad choice, lol). They were in their change room and the walls of the room are swaying and the crowd is going beserk, as 18,000 Canadian Gowan fans totally blow Styx out of the building. Tommy goes back stage and is dumbfounded not knowing anything about Gowan, and walks back slowly to the changeroom, saying that response is supposed to be for us.
Move ahead to 1999, when they are looking for a new Vocalist/Keyboard, and a Gowan fan member asks what about Gowan, you know the guy from the show in Montreal. The rest is history.

I saw him perusing products in Portage Place Mall a few years back. He was by himself.
He saw that I saw him and with an ever so slight grin he turned away.
Perhaps it was that he saw my spirit leap from within. Thus I gave myself away.
I was 14 when I delivered 'scription's for Chapman's Pharmacy throughout the North End of Winnipeg. That's when I first heard his melodic arrangements. His music, effort, creativity, production, composition, talent...if you could call it that, was among the precious few things I could trust. His music meant something to me. I was inspired in a meaningful and profound way. I was intrigued.
And suddenly there he was standing before me. Plain and ordinary but striking with clarity. My youth presented to me in this magnificent wizard cloaked in mystery and yet he never hid anything from us. He was reminiscent of my Elders. In fact he was my Elder.
Should I approach? What would I Say? I had no words that would express my adoration, admiration, appreciation. Suddenly I understood that it was enough to just see him being him. So I sat down at a table nearby and watched with great interest and all curiosity, at the artist that shared with me as many of his adventures as he could in a few years. It was over too soon and so alas, we parted ways once again without ever so much as an introduction. It is unforgettable.

I remember seeing Gowan live for the Strange Animal album back at the old Ontario Place revolving stage. Those were great shows and Criminal Mind was always the highlight of the set. Great seeing him keep this song alive with Styx.

Taking it easy on this wonderful Monday afternoon listening to some oldies and came across Criminal Minds by Gowan. One of my favorite tunes by Gowan, I remember seeing him for the first time in Mel Lastman square, the year was 1996. OMG as soon as he played the first few bars on his baby grand with chandelier lit with candles, I fell in love.. After his show, I went up to him and asked him to sign my t-shirt, he turned me around and signed it dedicated to a criminal mind. I asked him, how did he know this? He replied, I just know, and winked at me. True story. LOL

Easily my favorite Styx song. Gowan did a great job on this song. I was a lead vocalist many many years ago and did this song. I saw Styx at a Homecoming dance. In a year or two they were huge. We were pretty lucky only being an hour and a half out of Chicago. Some great bands would come down to have a warm up gig before a concert in Chicago. I remember playing in a club and suddenly it was empty. The owner said The Rolling Stones were on stage in a bar a couple of doors down. The drummer for the Doobie Brothers was from my high school. Pretty cool growing up in the Illinois Valley. I remember seeing White Trash from Edgar Winter and White Trash at a Sadie Hawkins dance. Great times growing up in the early 70's. Partying didn't kill you and the music was so good.

I have been a Gowan fan forever it seems through the Gowan days, Larry Gowan days, to the Lawrence Gowan days, then with Styxs. As happy to see Larry with Styxs I admit I miss the Gowan part of it all. All the great songs that he sung. To answer your question about Larry before Styxs, I went to a Lynden Washington USA concert and no body sitting around us had heard of him prior to joining the band. If fact some people were darn right rude about him replacing Dennis DeYoung.

    • @Deborahtunes
      @Deborahtunes 6 років тому +1

canadagirleh ~ The "DeYoung only" crowd can be EXTREMELY RUDE, as I've had to block a few of them myself on here... I'm just glad those people haven't deterred Lawrence from continuing with Styx for 19 years now... I've seen him with the band a couple of times, and he's always a gracious, energetic, fabulous performer... I wish the US could have heard of him before Styx...

They have never faded or lost their newness.. They are magical and talented, Every on of them. You want to see a great live performance? Watch styx and the contemporary youth orchestra of cleavland. I cried at first.. But then like a movie that grips and keeps you on the edge of your seat.. which in my case was on the foor.. They were true to their form and when you thought you seen the best of them with every move and song, They did one better. I think I love lawrence cowan!!
