- A little music video I made for Elliott Smith's "No Confidence Man."
This song was originally on a split 7-inch vinyl single with Pete Krebs's track "shytown" on the A side released in 1994. Making this song Elliott Smith's first single.
The song starts off recalling a memory of abuse at Charlie’s hands. Early drafts of the lyrics had “stick” instead of “loop,” having something to do with "a beating by a ping-pong paddle, the kind with a rubber surface on it, hence the reference to a ‘rubber loop." Elliott Smith's dad's abuse towards him and his mom is what led him to leave Texas as a teen and move to Portland.
In the video I try to capture the song's feeling and put it in the perspective of Elliott Smith, perhaps he is running away or taking a walk to clear his mind and get away from his father.
Elliott Smith made the music I had no part in making this beautiful song.
Lyrics:
Charlie got a band in his hand
A rubber loop
Says I'm the man you really want
So just act natural
Don't try to tell me your bullshit scheme
'Cause I have no idea what you mean
No idea
I'm just trying to sleep
I've heard quite enough
Just to listen is really tough
'Cause you're on it all the time
Hearing the bells it's 9 A.M
You better wake up your friend before he won't wake up anymore
'Cause I got to split I'm late to leave
He gave me nothing but grief
[And] some bullshit story only I would believe
I've heard quite enough
I hurt quite enough
You're on [it] all the time
You're on [it] all the time
You're on it all the time
[And] you're full of it all the time

I remember having a 45" record with "No Confidence Man" on it but i dont think it was the enitre Pete Krebs/Elliott ep. I think it may mave been a b-side for a different Elliott song 45" single.
The whole Pete K collaboration EP is epic. I only still have it cause of that 8 disc Grand Mal compilation.
But it used to be on digital platforms for awhile. Seems like the archive you source from is a leaner better version of Grand Mal, looking forward to digging in. Thank you.
Elliott would’ve wanted his work available. He was pretty adamant about that.
Yeah I found it after a while of looking around but it didn’t take me too long :) Is it still possible to purchase that EP?
Also no problem, I always wonder what he would be up to if he was still around :)
@@Cybertron7000 it’s not available that I’m aware of. Honestly it’s hard to say. He was really fascinated with instrumental sound scapes toward the end.
He was such a prolific musician, gotta figure he’d still be making tunes!
@@RustinChole yeah he’d be making music for sure :) That’s too bad there aren’t any left. Maybe I could find it somewhere secondhand
@@Cybertron7000 have you tried discogs? That site is shocking in terms of what they have available.
