This is the third step in legging up. Mike explains how to put the stretcher joints in compression. When he is done he has completed the H stretcher.

Shrot asked the name of the song that accompanies the opening montage. It is "Mason Jar of Home." My son (of the same name) is a song writer in Nashville. He experienced homesickness when he went off to school at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. Next trip home he filled a mason jar with soil from the woods surrounding our house and for four years kept it on his dorm room window sill. It prompted this song. I'm a fast driver but like the officer who pulls me over says... I'm a slow learner. I'll be watching these episodes lots of times.
That is why I made these videos. There is a lot of info in each one and by posting them here you can watch them as many times as needed. I hope you enjoy them.
These are great instructional videos, but you have not mentioned about grain direction and I know this is very important in obtaining a strong joint that won't split the timber.
The grain of the seat runs side to side, along the seat's long dimension. Other than that grain does not usually matter. To avoid splitting, always run wedges at a right angle to the grain.

@@thewindsorinstitute2047 gracias por responder...me siento halagado....a la fecha he hecho muchas sillas de varios modelos...excepto modelos q llevan piezas curadas ya q no cuento con el equipo para poder doblar las piezas de madera....lei en tu libro q una vez hicistes una silla con caoba hondureña y me sentí orgulloso..ya que soy hondureño y el trabajar con caoba ha sido para mi habitual...ya q hemos tenido a nuestra disposición está magnífica madera...he hecho sillas de Pino hondureño....teka...Melina...madera de color blanco con características increíbles...si me mandas tu correo podré Enviale fotos de las sillas q he hecho y las que han hecho mis alumnos....un gran placer saludarlo maestro....

Utilicé caoba una vez para hacer sillas. Funcionó bien para ese propósito. Sin embargo, dudo que sería bueno para otras partes de la silla. No estoy familiarizado con los árboles que crecen en Honduras. Entonces, te diré las propiedades que buscas. Necesitas una madera dura para los torneados. Utilizamos arce. Para la parte posterior se necesita madera que tenga fibras largas, que sea resistente y flexible. Utilizamos el roble. El tronco tiene que dividirse de manera fácil y limpia a más de 1 ½ metros. Any thoughts about doing a portion of the tutorial using brace and spoon bits? That would be nostalgic.
hey mike, it is only a matter of time before i start with this, and i still have my clico and even some fred emhoff spoon bits and i won't do it any other way. have you used spoon bits before? the stretchers must return to the lathe to rough out the oversize tenons that are then whittled to a tite fit. mike d probably will not teach this again, for a lot of reasons. a new production all together, availability of spoon bits, tedious for most, most folks won't get it and do it, ect, ect. mike d has crafted and streamlined a way for a number of determined players to make chairs. after that you can carry on any way you can and do and we hope you do!!!
Hi Mike: If this channel becomes self sufficient I plan an episode on spoon bits. While I know of no one making them, the knowledge of how to use and sharpen these tools deserves to be preserved. Until about 1815 they were the only bit used by chairmakers. In fact, they were known as "chair bits".
I still have all my old tools - spoon bits included. These videos are encouraging me to get back to making chairs again! So good to see you doing these videos and you look great.
BTW - I think it was the 'Amazing Incra Stick' that got me inducted into the 'Windsor Hall of Fame'.

@@thewindsorinstitute2047 Lee Valley makes spoon bits (5/8" catalog # 50K65.10). They don't work as nicely as the ones Fred Emhoff made, but they work just fine.
Mike any recommendations on where to purchase the tennon cutters?

Excellent, found them. Also you sold the drill depth stops through your Windsor store, do you still sell them, or have a recommendation for who does?
@@aparent100 Sorry. Those depth stops are no longer in production. You can put colored tape around your bit or make a depth mark with a Sharpie.

I'm not quite sure I understand what information you seek. The videos show you how to make the H stretcher and mount the legs.
@@thewindsorinstitute2047 Ah hello!, Thanks for the reply, sorry I didn't really say what I meant to. How do I go about getting the right dimensions for the legs themselves and the distance from the top to the small markers where the H-frame is?
I have a laith at home and would like to make them also from scratch if possible.
@@michaelcoyne3700 Pick up a copy of my book Make a Windsor Chair (either the original Taunton edition or the later F&W edition). Both have a drawing of a baluster leg as well as the other turned parts.
