There were Federalists in the South that were pro-slavery and Republicans in the North that were anti-slavery. I strongly suggest that you read Sean Wilentz's book The Rise of American Democracy: Jefferson to Lincoln
When he said all men are created equal I think he was referring to Americans and how bad the British crown treated them. Slaves weren't Americans yet and all slaves were treated like property. Same happened to white slaves in the arab slave trade.

This has been confirmed by computer analysis by the University of Aberdeen linguistics department (97% Thomas Paine less than 1% Thomas Paine). The original document was approved by John Hancock and one other delegate on July 2, 1776. It was copied by both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. These documents are in the Massachusetts historical society. There is also a death bed confession given by Thomas Paine that he was indeed the author of the American Declaration of Independence!
