      Hi
      Just want to say that for me, this is simply beautiful....interesting, thoughtful, focused and well researched work on a comparison I so wanted to know about...being interested in Abrahamic faiths, I thoroughly enjoyed this video....you brought forward the core purpose of all beliefs, teachings and practices of Abrahamic faith, which is the real REAL recognition of God....not mere belief but actual unity with the Divine...something we sadly lose sight of in hassle of life.
      I thank you for this video.
      Please keep doing this.

    Many of these concepts remind me of a section in St Augustine’s ‘The Confessions’, Book 10, Chapter 27: “Late have I loved you, O Beauty ever ancient, ever new, late have I loved you! You were within me, but I was outside, and it was there that I searched for you. In my unloveliness I plunged into the lovely things which you created. You were with me, but I was not with you. Created things kept me from you; yet if they had not been in you they would have not been at all. You called, you shouted, and you broke through my deafness. You flashed, you shone, and you dispelled my blindness. You breathed your fragrance on me; I drew in breath and now I pant for you. I have tasted you, now I hunger and thirst for more. You touched me, and I burned for your peace.”

    Dear Ze’ev, I love your channel and your awesome attitude and inclusiveness of thinking. I’ve been waiting for 35 years or more to finally hear somebody address the similarities and the beauties and subtleties that exist in many other mystical traditions and how they connect and relate to Kabbalah. Where were you 30 years ago…(probably not born yet 😊). Keep up the great work and Yashar Koach! It really bothers me, as a Jew, the Jews in general only see their own traditions and don’t look beyond to see how there may be some similarities or even many similarities in other traditions. On the other hand, whenever there are deep philosophical and intellectual conversations about world mysticism’s and the like, The depth and breath and wisdom of Kabbalah is never present in those conversations. The world at large has a very skewed and archaic vision of Judaism in general, that’s why your channel is a great service to humanity.

    • @SeekersofUnity
      @SeekersofUnity  3 роки тому +8

      Dearest Adam, the work, research, thinking, writing, editing and sharing that goes into the channel isn't easy. It's slow, tedious, laborious, unsexy and often lonely. It's messages like yours that give me the motivation to continue putting in the work. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. I really believe that we need a radical change of attitude both towards other religions and to the place of Jewish mysticism in the global conversation. Mysticism, i believe, is universal, beautiful, persuasive and desperately needed today. I'm glad to be able to play a small part in making that vision a reality and it wouldn't happen with the support and encouragement of people like you. Thank you.
      With love, Zevi

    Hey, I just discovered this channel (via "Let's Talk Religion") and I love it!
    I was raised atheist in China and even after coming to the US I haven't been that attracted to monotheistic/Abrahamic religions (except the rituals and art/architecture). However, after encountering mysticism in Islam and Judaism I got really intrigued (some videos from Filip on Sufi music, Abraham Maimonides, and then this video). This may be partly because I've been practicing meditation, and while I know very little about Buddhism, some ideas of Sufism and Kabbalah (everything in the world is manifestation of God, seeking unity with God through spiritual practices, and that one can only reach this unity through practice/"tasting" rather than intellectualization or semantics) sound similar to those in Buddhism once you remove the monotheistic God stuff. Another idea I appreciate is the "drunken love", e.g. the ecstatic state Sufis achieve by listening to music -- I appreciate music/art/beauty in a similar way, even though without the religious element. I think these mystics are on to something, as you said, fundamental truths about the human psyche or ontology of the world (my hypothesis is on the human psyche side because I subscribe more to materialism, hehe). So even though I will probably never be religious (?), I am excited to keep exploring this and learn from you!
    Also, it is so beautiful that you are doing this work from Jerusalem. There is too much division in the world along religious lines and otherwise. I love that you are showing us the commonality among different religious traditions as well as inspirations for living a more spiritual life. Thank you!

    I had a friend who was born a Catholic, but left the Church in young adulthood. He was however open to believing in the idea of a Higher Power. He spent a lot of his spare time studying such things as Gnosticism, Kabbalah, Sufism and the Quaran, Zen buddhism etc.
    He pointed out the similarities between the physical symbolism of the Kaaba in Mecca, and the black boxes of Tefillin. And then he explained an esoteric mystical relationship between the Kaaba and Tefillin boxes. His explanation went completely over my head at the time. It was so esoteric. Maybe, I should have put the following question in your latest Q&A video Zevi. The question being, is there any mystical and symbolic connection between the Kaaba and boxes of Tefillin?

    Wonderful video and much respect to my Jewish brothers and sisters! One point that I feel needs to be emphasized from the Muslim perspective concerning emanation/fayd at 11:00 in the video is the role of the Prohet Muhummud's heart (commonly known in Islam as noor-e-Muhummud/ light of Muhummud). Basically, we believe that God eminated his light/being on to the heart of the Prophet Muhummud (which was the first spirtual creation) and that reflected into creation.

      Thank you sister/brother. Thank you for pointing that out. I wonder if there might be a fruitful parallel worth exploring between noor-e-Muhummud in Sufism/Islam and Adam Kadmon in Kabbalah/Judaism. I don't know Sufi metaphysics well enough to saw this with certainty, but they both seem to be anthropomorphic representations of similar points on the emanationistic path. Hmm, do you have any thoughts on this? I wonder if anything has been written up on this. Thanks again for bringing this to my attention and thanks for coming and interacting with the channel. Just found and subscribed to your channel. in my opinion, Kabbalah teaching has really structured and detailed Kabbalistic mystical philosophy, while the Sufis do not so much rely on and study mystical philosophy but more on intuitive, devotional, and sometimes ecstatic practices through special mystical prayers (varied according to the Schools). Ibn Arabi's teachings have very detailed mystical philosophy and cosmology but not all Sufis read or practice his teachings, among different schools and tariqas, each of them has its own mystical philosophy, while the Kabbalists, despite there are many different schools, most of them use the similiar system of mystical philosophy (Sephirots, etc). But The Irfan (Shi'ite mysticism), in my opinion, have similarities with the Kabbalist in their approach to mysticism, they study a lot Sufistic text a lot Sufistic and philosophy texts (Ibn Arabi, Suhrawardi, Mulla Sadra, etc) and put the practices strongly based on mystical philosophies, just like the Kabbalist study a lot Kabbalistic texts and philosophy (Zohar, Sephirots, Bahir, etc)

    Very interesting to see the similarities between Kabbalah and Sufism. This is especially considering Rav Avraham ben Ha'Rambam and many of his descendants were into Sufism as the Rambam's son held Sufism preserved lost Jewish mysticism

    Amazing video and such a wonderful comparative study. I’m happy to have come across this through the Esoterica channel.
    Unfortunately I must say though, that the poem you read in the end is not a Hafez poem. It’s by an American so-called translator Daniel Ladinsky who has published books claiming to be translations of Hafez poetry; yet Ladinsky can not even speak Farsi. He’s not referencing the poems to their original Farsi and their form and content have no similarities with Hafez at all. At best, they are “inspired” by what the 19th century English translators of Hafez interpreted. He even admits that he began writing these “translations” after Hafez came to him in a dream, gave him a bunch of papers asking him to publish these new poems in English! I hate to see one of the pillars of my ancestral culture misrepresented so I felt I should share it with you 🙏 Looking forward to more Sufi videos from you 💛

    As salam alaikum. Beautiful words in your video. Let our souls breathe in Love. I am also interested in comparative studies. What would you recommend for understanding similarities and non similarities in the cosmological view in both traditions? Not easy to follow similarities between the Names and Attributes and the Sephirot but I am sure you have pondered over it. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Most of this direct comparison is original research therefore. I’m sure there’s work out there to this effect though, if one knows how to find it. Best of luck my brother.

      @@SeekersofUnity when I attended retreats, the teachers always told us about the "formlesness" of God, and the fact that there is nothing but Him, and we all live in His "mind" as His icons. According to them the only way to fully unite with Him starts with killing your ego.
      Im saying this as a seeker not as an expert. I'm sure there's also many differences, and I dont want to be disrespectful, but I just can't help myself to think that there is some core mystical experience, and all this is just that, but filtered through different cultures and traditions.

    For your further edification and the furtherance of divine education, there is a book called, "Readings From the Mystics of Islam", which is a compilation of direct source translations of Sufi writings, from the 8th to the 19th century. Compiled by Margaret Smith. You might've even read it, perhaps not. Rather than being a book about Sufism, it is the actual work of these notable people.

    Zevi, have you ever put down a tool, a pen, your keys, your phone and then immediately forgot where you put them (it)? There are too many failsafe systems in place which keep Man in his place--no matter his intelligence. Some are even known like the Sufi idea:
    "A finger pointing toward the Moon is not the Moon."
    Most however are not, which bring me to another Sufi idea:
    "The dog barks. The caravan moves on." (I think of myself here)
    Nevertheless, fun stuff to listen to while I wait.

    Pretty awesome discussion! I would like to say that it seems rather unfair to compare mystic lineages based on metaphysics though. A philosophical and spiritual inclination between monocentric theologies is likely to come to the same conclusions especially considering the Oneness of divinity or human conditions and practices such as bitul hayesh (since the human experience is ultimately a universal one anyway). I mean there are really only so few ways to come to a good answer on these types of things.

    • @SeekersofUnity
      @SeekersofUnity  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you. I agree with you. These two traditions we're pretty easy to demonstrate all the thing you mentioned. I've chosen them to present first because of the rapprochement desperately needed between the two religious today. I hope to continue this project and show the unity among the mystical traditions, including the Western traditions which you're doing great work elucidating and the Eastern traditions, and although metaphysics is a key interest of mine, i hope to look at the many other fascinating elements which comprise a mystical tradition. Thank you for watching and your your feedback. Be well.
