  • Today we are on the second part of our trip out across the country to rescue five airplanes in seven days. After leaving the extreme cold in Minneapolis we headed to the slightly less cold Denver to check out our next airplane and see what we will need to bring back to get this damaged aircraft running again. On the way we check in with Joe on his drive home with the 235 and hear about some potential damage we might have to deal with.

R.I.P Sam, sending love to his family and the Rebuild it rescue family from the UK. I personally love your videos, and Sam always lit up the room, and from the videos alone, you could see he had a fantastic sense of humour,
I believe he's up there watching over you all, and I believe he would want you to push forward with the 401

I've been trying to catch up on the videos and saw that Sam had passed! I am so sorry for your loss! He was a big part of RR and he will be missed! Keep up the good work on all the rescues! I agree with one of the comments about having the 401 registration with Sierra Golf as the suffix! I think it is only fitting with all the work that Sam did on that beautiful plane! I can't wait to see the finished product and hope that I can one day come see it in person! As a pilot myself and working on my instrument, commercial, and multi-engine ratings, I really appreciate all that you and your crew are doing to rescue these airplanes. Keep up the great work RR and God speed Sam! You will be missed!

Owner of an M20J here! Although the 201 mph speed (175 kts) appears very briefly in the POH, the cruise is more in the 150 kts range at 9.5 gph. You can bump it up to 12-13 gph and do 160 kts. I've never even tried firewalling it to see how close I can get to the theoritical 175 kts, but it would be fun to do. It needs to happen at a certain altitude too. Maybe you could have the "201" ready before the "401"? Yeah!

I was very sorry and shocked to hear news of Sam's untimely passing a month ago. He was a really lovely guy from what I've been reading, and kind of mysterious in some ways. He was one of the chief reasons I first took a real interest in this project and this channel. From what I've learned over the past month, there was so much more to Sam than his association with the increasingly complicated main project that stimulated interest in this channel. He was a genuine pillar of his community and a very kind man. His loss for his family and community must be devastating; his loss to this channel is insignificant in that context, but it is significant to me.
And there are other problems as far as I'm concerned, such as the fact that the accident was in a written-off plane "rescued" by this company - a side project, presumably - which clearly means there are a lot of safety questions that need to be answered. As well as that, I find it troubling that videos documenting that plane's refurbishment haven't been removed (although I note the comments have been turned off). It's my understanding that those videos are part of the NTSB's ongoing investigation. They're evidence. It feels wrong for that (and other) reasons that they're still accessible.
Finally, I don't think the "this is what he would have wanted" claim plays all that well because I'm afraid it feels pretty forced. If, for instance, his wife had supported the claim at some point, even in a message, I might be convinced. Of course, if she has but I didn't catch it, then I stand corrected.
I wish his family continuing strength in this difficult time. My prayers are with them.
But I don't think I want to follow this project any more because I'm afraid I've lost faith in this channel.

We will have to wait for the report. My money is on artificial deadlines from this channel pressuring Sam to fly as a factor. As for the fuel cap, also could have been caused by these artificial deadlines for views. We will have to wait and see. I unsubscribed as well.

I really love your channel and content and will continue to follow. My enthusiasm for aspiring to own and fly my own affordable older airplane is significantly diminished after what happened with Sam and the Cougar. Airplanes are a whole different ball of wax than vintage cars...perhaps some older aviation stuff is not worth the risk of rescuing as the margins for safety are so much smaller on stuff that that stays on the ground. Not even Boeing (with McDonnell Douglas management) can seem to get it right despite their huge resources. Hope to see the 401 in the air soon (and I mean this sincerely). I'll be watching from the ground and will vicariously live my aviation dreams through your efforts,

I think the Mooney M20J airplanes weren’t very common in Europe because these are very rare so very hard ro find with us. I’ve seen such an airplane only once and that was in the Luzern airport in Switzerland. I’m not too technical regarding airplanes like you are but because it’s a rare airplane I guess it’s more than worthwhile to rescue this plane.

I don't know when the appropriate time to ask this question would be, but I have been wondering who will be flying the 401 when it's finished? I'm under the impression that Sam was the only member of the crew with multi-engine and IFR certifications.

Maybe a highly trained certified and experienced test pilot volunteer...

Better for the rudder to pop loose on the truck then in the air. 😱

I think, the Bird House, also known as the 401, will always be Sam's 401.

That last video from Minnesota must have been last winter? Because this winter has been very very mild

In Australia it’s a $1000 fine for using your phone while driving and about $500 for not wearing a seatbelt

Regardless, finish the 401. I think you need to re think the colours of it and and while not making the 401 a Sam Shrine, make it something more of Sam to carry forward. Without the offer of a free plane (bird shack) none of us would have met Sam.

Why would you not use the Bluetooth instead of holding your phone while driving. Come on man, Safety first. Other than that keep up the good work!

I’m an airline pilot with GA roots and I’ve been following you guys from the beginning of the 401 project. I cut my aviation chops in SE PA. I absolutely love the channel and fully support what you guys are doing. Anytime I see nay sayers on the Tube, I chime in to support you guys. Keep the faith! Sam would want that.
