Definitely one of the most overlooked films In both Hoffman and McQueen’s careers, they both disappeared into their parts, you barely recognize them by the end of the film
Such a fantastic movie and one of my dad's favorite. First time I saw it was with him when I was a child. Even at a young age, my eyes were glued to the screen because I found the movie so interesting.
I watched this movie on a whim one night. It's a fabulous movie, but it's also not for the faint of heart. If you're the least bit depressed, don't watch it. Even though he escapes at the end, it's a slog to get through. The things that happen to this guy are just horrendous. One bad thing after another. But, if you can stomach that it's an amazing film overall. McQueen and Hoffman are just amazing.
No, definitely not for the faint of heart. Especially at the leper colony with Anthony Zerbe emerging from the shadow behind his desk and offering Papillion a puff from his cigar.
I read both this book and Banco which was his adventures after his escape. The BRUTAL conditions of the bagne cannot be exaggerated. No movie can honestly portray just how brutal it was.
I've read the book a couple of times and I'll say this. Based on many sources, half of the book is likely made up or borrowed stories by Henri. DON'T let that ruin the book if you've already read it or keep you from reading it if you haven't. The book and the film are inspiring masterpieces.
@@jimjam51075 I agree with you. I was very disappointed when I first heard that much of the book was fiction. Henri was a great storyteller inside prison and outside as well. His books entertain, and that’s what important to me.
2:44 One of the dead "manhunters" is Richard Farnsworth who had a very long career in Hollywood. Starting as a stuntman/extra in the 1930's then doing bit parts for decades including this film and "The Outlaw Josey Wales" where he played one of John Quade's (the tattooed guy in this clip) Comancheros. In the late 70's, he started getting bigger roles and would finish his career as a twice Oscar nominated actor. Just an amazing career arc.

I worked at the space centre at Kourou, living in air conditioned luxury, but exploring the country from the transportation camp at St Laurent, and out to the Isles du Salut prisons, and rubbing shoulders with ex prisoners, I can say without doubt that it would be nigh on impossible to over dramatise the film Papillon The place was a hell hole.
No air conditioning is an understatement. The men are constantly sweaty and clothes caked with sweat. Chronic dehydration unless they’re always guzzling water, which they probably aren’t. It was miserable there even if you were acclimated to the heat. Which is why the natives never wear anything.
He played the leader of the Black Widows in Every Which Way But Loose and Any Which Way You Can. He was great in that role. He was also in some of Eastwood's westerns.
It was very satisfying to see the Manhunters rot in the bushes, I know it's a movie but it was a pity they were killed asleep, which probably saved them some suffering.
Fun fact: the bird call that's heard is that of a limpkin. It's a wading bird whose call is a stock sound effect in Tarzan movies as well as other movies set in Africa back in the day. Kudos for using it properly! And kudos to anyone who has put up with this pedantic rant. Just dont get me started on poisonous vs. venomous animals! 😁
@@Driven2Beers Now I understand! So they should have never been heard in Africa then. Most movies are riddled with such errors, but eventually one specialist always shows up paying great attention and pointing the error. 😁 One bloke even found that in the 1997 movie Titanic two dogs were being led by a leash whose brand did not exist in 1912. Now, that's expertise! 😲
@@duartesimoes508 Another thing that bugs me (and yes it's a bird trope!) is whenever any bird of prey, especially the bald eagle, is shown on a TV show or commercial, its call is always the "KIRRR" of a red-tailed hawk. Wouldn't have even noticed if I wasn't an avid birdwatcher!
@@Driven2Beers Since you are knowledgeable about birds, do you have any info about the common Sparrow vanishing from Portugal - where I live - or the whole Peninsula? Some I know were chased by scarecrows suspended from trees in Town Parks and Squares and resembling huge kites painted like birds of prey or monsters. They are incredibly effective! 😱 They use them in those places because at sunset the flocks of Sparrows coalesce and become _unbearably noisy,_ they clog the gutters and they _bomb_ 💣everyone walking below. 💪🤬💪🤬But I see them nowhere else. Could it be because they are being chased away by seagulls, which are now everywhere and more daring and inconvenient than ever, and by a Brazilian green Parakeet that is thriving in Lisbon Parks and becoming more and more numerous? They now appear to be afraid of doing so just when it became imperative.

Steve McQueen's best performance and Oscar worthy. John Quade was brilliant as Brenton another excellent actor.
