Llyn Y Fan Fach Walk - Brecon Beacons National Park

- Llyn y Fan Fach sits beneath the ridgeline of Bannau Sir Gaer in the Brecon Beacons National Park. In this Vlog I explore this epic scenerey and the remnants of the landscape’s glacial past. Along the way I'll visit Picws Du, Fan Brycheiniog, Llyn Y Fan Fawr and the crash site of a de Havilland Vampire a British Jet just below Fan Hir.
A folklore legend connected with Llyn y Fan Fach is the myth of ‘The lady of the lake’. In the folktale, a young farmer of the 13th century spotted the most beautiful girl he’d ever seen emerge from the lake, she was a princess from the kingdom of fairies. He courted the fairy princess by baking her bread and after 3 attempts he succeeded in winning her hand in marriage on the condition that if he hit her three times she would leave him. He complied easily because she was so beautiful and they were happy for years bringing up a family at his farm near Myddfai, with her magic dowry of farm animals.
In time the inevitable happened he hit his wife and she disappeared back into the lake taking her prized animals with her , leaving the farmer with her sons. The sons once grown became known as the “Physicians of Myddfai” who became physicians to the English royal court.

Great video. One of my favourite places. First expored these parts as a spotty teenager on my D of E. Now 59 years of age it still takes my breath away just as it did when I first saw it. A truly magical place. After all fairy stories only happen in lands far far away. This on the other hand is just on the other side of the mountain where I live, and very real. :)

Such a quiet place! Love it.
I walked that very walk 2 days ago. I even walked around like you at the base..Breath taking. I only saw 4 people as well.
Still my fav walk Ian! It's mad to think in peak summer so few people visit compared to more popular peaks such as Pen y Fan. It's still such a hidden gem love it!

My dad in 1939 was part of a rescue party that went up the summit of Fan Hir to bring down the crew of a crashed Avro Anson . I don't think the crew made it unfortunately but there is a memorial stone outside The door of Callwen church .

Hey guys! If you take the Llanddeusant car park walk it's about an hour to the top of Llyn y Fan Fach and the next lake Llyn y Fan Fawr is about an hour from there at a leisurely walk taking in Picws Ddu etc. You'll do it all in day of good weather! 👍

Just did this walk and don’t be fooled by how fresh he is. I just walked the carpark to the first lake and is tougher than he makes it look lol

Is it dangerous? Like any particularly precarious/narrow parts?
Not really if you stick to the main routes there’s no narrow paths
How long did this walk take you ? I'm there tomorrow but I've seen mixed time scales online.
Hi Daniel depends on your pace I’d say. Leisurely to the first lake an hour, my speedy full route pace probably around 4 hours but over 5 if you want a chilled day with stops and over 6 if you want to do the crash site as well.

Hi Jay! I'll be going to brecon soon nd was wondering how long does this walk take, is it nice to do in early october and where can i park? :)
Hey you'll love it! Can be as long or as short as u like. You can just do the one lake in an hour or so or work your way around the other Carnarthenshire fans and second lake in a good 4 hours or so. If you want to do the crash site as well I'd say set off at first light and expect to be out till sunset. Hope that helps

@@JayCurtis we don't want to do the whole circular - so how long to walk from the car park to Llyn y Fan Fach, and from there just up onto the ridge above the lake and back down the same way? Thanks

where on the map does this walk start from thou? Where are you parked?
Hi Jack I use the Llanddeusant car park- post code SA19 9UN as the quickest and most impressive route and it starts there on my vid. But you could climb from the Dan yr Ogof showcaves side as well.
