6:42 Actually both Thailand and the Philippines made troop contributions to Vietnam. In fact I think Thailand sent more than Australia and New Zealand combined with only South Korea sending more troops.

Pakistan as a country has no culture or history of its own. 96% of them are converted from Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism etc and that's why they rely on others to help them in wars they start themselves but get beaten.

A good continuation well for the SEATO line is the establishment of ASEAN in 1967. More things that contributed to the dissolution of SEATO in 1977 was the Vietnam war ending in 1975 after the Fall of Siagon, and the Philippines establishing relations with Soviet Russia in 1976.
Of course, ASEAN gave up on the anti-communist part in the 1990s, when they let Vietnam and Laos join (and also Myanmar and Cambodia, who weren't in it before then either, but they weren't communist anymore in the 1990s). (Some might argue Vietnam and maybe Laos weren't "communist" in the 1990s, either, I suppose.) Also, not including mostly far-away former colonial powers like the UK, France, and USA was a notable difference, and I wonder if that helped get Indonesia on board with ASEAN, while they wouldn't do SEATO.

CENTO also gave Nasser the excuse to disentangle himself from any alliance with America because how dare America align itself with his Hashemite rivals in Iraq. So much for America's support for Egypt during the Suez crisis.
Srikar Lingampally I would say Nehru was always an old friend in the Subcontinent to the Soviet Union. Yes we did go to the USA for food shortages, and the Americans did come to us for providing asylum to the Dalai Lama, but we were firm allies of the Soviet Union right until it’s very demise.

Thank you for pointing out that the Arab states-Soviet alliances were out of the fact that Russia/Soviets didn't have a colonial history in those areas. Too many believe that the Arab states were all of a suddenly embracing Soviet style communism, when in fact it was a combination of left-nationalism, anti-cronyism and tired of being or treated as serfs and it's ideologies trying to capture that sentiment; Nasserism and Baathism and then later Third International Theory (Libya) which are all off shoots of Arab Socialism an ideology that did reject Soviet Communism.

The expansion of US foreign policy in the region, in the environment of the post WW2 decade, was almost a foregone conclusion.
Because en route to defeating Japan, the massive amout of US resources were scattered about the Pacific, like stepping stones. And just simply by having a presence, and having given aid, and building working relationships with numerous nations, it only made sense to forge formal agreements with former allies.
Especially convenient was the running narrative of the common enemy, mostly communism, but sometimes other regional nation's interests. But whatever the root cause, it is easy to see how the spread of US protectionism occured and matured through the cold war.
As someone else already commented, many of those nations remain allies today, in various forms.
The interesting thing is, during the cold war, the actual threat of yet another shooting war, especially in southeast Asia and central Europe, was always seen as legitimate. Which kept both regions remarkably calm considering the biggest players had massive interest in preventing WW3, ironically by constantly preparing for its eventuality.
Thus proxy wars and client states, but no cataclysmic new world war. So, as someone who lived through the last couple decades of the cold war, and remembers the mindset of constantly wanting it to be over, when it actually happened, the peace dividends everyone expected failed to ultimately appear.
Instead, it was as though a long simmering Pandora's Box was opening. Now, instead of two primary factions, you had 43. Like a giant reset button, and the entire worldwide diplomatic system rebooted itself.
And so the irony is, that the cold war was actually a safer time in history, than it ever appeared to be while living through it. Sure a couple times (1983, etc.) we almost glassed the whole planet. But MAD surprisingly enough actually worked.
And today the world is suffering the death from a thousand cuts. I imagine very few sharp minds back in circa 1989-1994 thought our current situation would have been the end result of those long awaited changes, some thirty years later...

Your series has made so many things much clearer. I grew up during the Cold War and went into the service two years after the fall of Saigon. I just never realized all that was going on at the time.
I wouldn't necessarily state that SEATO was a "failure" in its aims and objectives, but was perhaps a "misuse" of an alliance. Theres evidence to suggest a more immediate catalyst for the alliances formation was the threat of thousands of Chinese troops pouring across Vietnam's border in a manner reminiscent of the Korean War. Possibly internationalising a conflict the U.S preferred regional states to fight. SEATO's organised command structure and military exercises certainly pay testament to denying Chinese provocation and aggression in SEA. The advent of the Laos Crisis in 1961 highlighted the divergent strategic interests and disunity in the alliance when confronting a non-state actor, ultimately undermining the alliances credibility. The idea that SEATO was a "failure" is a simplification of the alliance's short life, when its possible to argue that the alliance was not designed for the threats that emerged from the fragile regimes that emerged in post-colonisation Indochina.

Not well known is during the east Timor crisis: when Australia lead a UN Peace keeping mission after the East Timor independence vote
and subsequent war crimes encouraged by the TNI (Indonesian Military ); The Indonesian President Habibi suggested a possible war with Australia.
The then US Secretary of State Madeline Albright visited Indonesia within 24 hours to 'Discus some issues'
and for the rest of the East Timor's transition to independence and the UN mission
the USN 7th Fleet conducted exercises off shore of East Timor .

@Srikar Lingampally, one thing I have noticed is that Indians in the internet are very anti-Pakistani and spend lots of time making anti-Pakistani rhetoric. I advise people like you to spend your time orienting people of the like towards educatio and making contributions to your own country. Acting in accord with the goals of anti-Pakistani media institutions is going to achieve little to nothing, after all, Pakistan is a complete religious shithole that you need to forget even exists.
Pakistan had started both wars against India and expected the west to come help them defeat India which was never going to happen. Even China refused to go help Pakistan despite being India's enemy.

In 1984 I was stationed in New Zealand with the U.S. Navy, where we provided logistical support to the National Science Foundation for research in Antarctica. As we were basically on a non-military mission, we had no weapons, not even so much as a BB gun. I believe we were forbidden by the NZ government from having any sort of weaponry, and the nuclear controversy was a major strain on US/NZ relations. It wasn't without it's humorous moments: we had to open our base to the NZ authorities, where they conducted a search to ensure that we weren't storing nuclear weapons. They looked under beds and furniture, and lo and behold, no nukes. Go figure.
Also your country wouldn't allow foreign nationals to run around gunned up so why would the Kiwi's allow it on their own home soil
Let's revive SEATO right now in order to end the Chinese and North Korean aggressions.

Also remember an important function of military alliances was to standardize military hardware thus giving American military manufacturers a readymade market for their wares.
Not really, Australia used a combination of locally designed, British and American equipment. But they tended to have more British than American stuff.
Yeah...... Australia buys American castoffs alot and wonders why we blow through our defence budget on what is basically Op Shop garbage..... thankfully we're going our own way now since American military planners have ignored our regional threats for far too long

India and Pakistan never fought long wars. Most of them stopping within a few weeks. 1971 was probably the biggest but that only went on for a couple of weeks as well militarily before India won again.

De-Nuclearization was starting to get big around that time because everyone apparently was worried we were going to glass the entire planet.
New Zealand was a huge supporter of this I think.
The French were blowing up some of their Pacific Islands with A-Bombs near New Zealand. This inflamed their activist movement which eventually started dictating NZ's government's policy to anti-nuclear.

Either its the USA or USSR(RU now) or any other country for that matter no one is going to be ok with Two World Powers having the capabilities to glass our entire planet because someone launched it first(because MAD).
The initial split was over the US refusal to confirm or deny that ships sent to New Zealand were armed with nuclear weapons. This created an aura of mistrust between the NZ and US governments. We were allies and being told we weren't trusted to keep a secret. Plus from a safety perspective it's useful to know what materials are onboard. Imagine if there was an accident in port that released radioactive material into the harbour of a New Zealand city? In addition a series of nuclear accidents galvinised public opinion against nuclear technology in New Zealand. The government acted by banning ships that could be nuclear armed from New Zealand waters. This displeased the US government who rather than simply sending non-nuclear armed warships decided to try to force New Zealand into backing down and so temporarily suspended treaty obligations to New Zealand. It all came to a head when the Rainbow Warrior was bombed by French agents in 1985 while berthed in Auckland and all we heard was crickets from the US. This convinced most New Zealanders that the US was an unfaithful partner. So when Parliament passed a law in 1987 making New Zealand officially nuclear free no one cared much for the opinion of the US.

the ussr was busy fortifying its middle east and europe fronts. it didn't have to confront japan, south korea and the territory of what would become asean since there's china. all it needs to do to cover its eastern front is to not agitate the chinese too much, cuz if it fails to do so, the ussr will face extremely great pressure from both sides, and it's only militarily insured against europe.
