There is a technique among gilders. If you really want the gold to pop first you lay down a coat of paint. The paint is called gilders red. And because the gold leaf is only one molecule, thick light will actually pass through it. Hit the red paint and reflect back with a very warm gold glow. You should try this on future projects. You would be amazed of the difference

Gold leaf is thin, but it is definitely not only one molecule thick.

I bet you could bend some old hangers to imbed into that foam... then dig underneath once you are ready to pull out the foam and you have as big a handle as you like. Hope that works! Cheers! BEAUTIFUL work. That is a table I would love to have. Shoot I would love a desk done that way!!! Brilliant!

Looks great. Probably needs a glass top for functionality's sake. Can't believe you're already closing in on a million, very well deserved! I remember when this channel was just some lawyer fiddling about in his tiny basement during his free time with those close observation of the su-purrr-visor, Karma Cat. That timelapse though showed how well Tex has filled the role as the su-pup-visor.

I like it. When i saw the thumbnail i assumed the table was solid concrete and the canyons were filled with epoxy after the goldleaf. But i actually like it this way too. Now that i saw how you built it i realised it would be too heavy if it was solid concrete, and the canyons look really good open like that. Always good to challenge my assumptions and learn something. Table looks great with the wood floating above the floor and the concrete part floating above the wood - well done!

I just started watching this video but I already know I’mma love it! From a creator strand point you always seem to do things I haven’t seen and.more importantly things I never thought would be possible. Your videos are by far my favourite of any creator (in the whatever category this is) and as someone who left a job that let me do this kinda work (for a job in the operating engineers union with a pension and benefits) I crave the kind of creativity I don’t get to do anymore, and appreciate seeing you do it!

Looks cool! I think the side knockouts would look a bit more cohesive if maybe they were voids that adjoined to the main canyon? Like if you could feasibly make them tunnel through the table and pop out the main canyon (as s sort of cave?). May be too hard, and even harder to guild.

I love the look of this, but it's totally impractical as a coffee table. It is beautiful. I agree with other commentators that a glass or high-quality plastic cover would look amazing, but it would be too easy to slide off. A small lip all around would allow it to sit inside and be lifted out for cleaning. It would also allow the owner to put in decorations in the cavity such as Christmas/Halloween etc to make it even more unique. Instead of the cutouts, you could have done rectangular inserts to allow books/remotes etc to be stored almost out of sight. Great first attempt and I'm sure someone out there will love to own it.

Great project, Mike! With complete respect to your art and talent, this would not be considered kintsugi. I think you hit the nail on the head with the video title with gilding. Kintsugi is specifically an art of repairing and translates to "repair with gold" or "join with gold". Obviously I'm being pedantic here and it doesn't matter, but thought you or others might enjoy the etymology.

I thought that a squirrel hair brush was used to pat down the gold leaf? 🤔
But then when you said it wasn't real gold leaf, guess it doesn't matter 🤭
The squirrel hair doesnt take the shine off the real gold leaf btw, unlike a plastic bristled brush would 😉

I used a gilding brush, I assume that it's whatever type of hair is needed... Very soft

With the amount of viewers you get, I can comfortably say that most people watch because they like you and they like the video format. So most people are returning viewers. I loved the music edit, instead of the same explanation for the 50th time. You can always just put a link in the video there, pointing to the explanation video.
