  • Here's a bit of a left field choice if you were shopping for vacuum cleaners in 1985. Would you have chosen a Hoover Turbopower U2198, an Electrolux Z560 Electronic OR this Hotpoint 3680? All for the pretty much the same price.
I suspect most people bought the Hoover or Electrolux.
But were they WRONG? Should they have actually bought the Hotpoint? Well stick around for some surprising results :-O

Be they branded as Hotpoint, Bosch or Siemens these were sturdily made and effective cleaners.
We love the simple boxy design and it remains one of our favourites from your collection.

Not a surprise on this one. I own the Bosch version we got here in the states and it’s one of my all time favorite vacs. It does such an excellent job and always has done for me. Happy to see that reflected in the numbers. Cheers!

      There was a Bosch version?!

@@heeheeriah yep, the Bosch Variomatic. Same as the hotpoint but in white with black accents. Mine is from 1990 but mine is also the only one I have ever seen.

@jettmuss@@nicko5945 This thing was made by Siemens. There was an "Universal"-version that could be used for dry carpet cleaning.

@@heeheeriah not so much a Bosch "version" as much as it was a Bosch cleaner to begin with. If anything, what we had in the UK was a "Hotpoint" version of a Bosch cleaner, as it was they who built for Hotpoint. However. although I have never seen a Bosch or Siemens version of this cleaner in the UK, I have seen the name listed against spare parts, such as dust bags and belts. Whether the cleaners were actually sold here under those names, I have no idea.
The connection between Bosch and Hotpoint goes back to the early 1980s, and for many years some of the Hotpoint dishwashers were in fact built by Bosch - in fact this carried on until around 2003 or so and eventually ended when Merloni (parent group of Indesit & Ariston) purchased a huge share of the Hotpoint company.

Brilliant result and I saw how it lifted the rug up! Vacuum with a motorized brush roll and powerful suction motor is the deepclean king.

Good observation. It’s interesting that this machine that it’s cheap works nicely. So sometimes companies do the right thing without charging a lot of money. I know may be it smells or may be will broke in a couple of months but still it’s the winner in Steve’s Testing.

@@hoovernunez well I can't speak for anywhere else in the world as I do not possess the knowledge to do so, but here in the UK these cleaners were not at all cheap to purchase. They were reasonably well built, but were not readily available in all shops, which may go some way to explaining why they were not all that popular here. Granted a great number of them must have been sold in the years (about eight years or so) they were on sale, but as Steve has written in his introduction, a Hoover or Electrolux would have been a much more likely choice for the same price as a Hotpoint.
Added to which, in the UK Hotpoint had never been a market leader in the vacuum cleaner sector (laundry was a completely different matter altogether) and immediately prior to the arrival of the Hotpoint Universal upright in the style we see here, the only vacuum they had was the cheap light & easy - the "poor man's Hoover Junior" by another name. So, to go from that to this was a massive step, when you consider they were not only selling a high-end product, but were also needing to change the mindset and perceptions among the consumers.

Don't think so. I've seen all your awesome comments, not had chance to work through them yet though. Might be a temporary YT glitch?

@@TheVintageApplianceEmporium It's happened several times on different videos of yours, but as you are practically the only channel I write on, I can't compare to see what the problem might be. I've written something for your U1016 video and it keep disappearing...I guess YT doesn't like something in it, but what I don't know. Thank you as always for your kind words.
