  • The Garter Tab Cast On is used to begin triangular shawls that are worked top-down from the center, and gives a clean, polished-looking edge, without the center gap that you may get when knitting a top-down shawl with a regular cast on.
After casting on and working a few rows, you'll pick up stitches around three sides of your garter stitch tab to work your shawl from. You'll often see garter stitch tabs starting with two, three, or four stitches, our version here starts with four.
    Steps:
Cast on 4 stitches using your preferred cast on method.
    Knit 4 rows.
Note: If using DPNs, use one needle for each edge of your garter tab, starting a new DPN each time you round a corner.
Row 5 (RS): Knit 4; do not turn your work. Instead, rotate work 90 degrees clockwise, so stitches just worked are on right-hand side and short edge of tab is facing up.
With left needle tip (or spare DPN) pick up 1 stitch from the short edge.
Rotate work 90 degrees clockwise, so stitches just worked are on right-hand side and cast-on edge is facing up.
With left needle tip (or spare DPN) pick up 4 stitches from the cast-on edge.
    [9 stitches now on needle]

You draw so fast and so perfect...!!! Your sketch helped me re-visualize an even easier way to do this that I saw and learned (and then forgot...) some years ago from another Hispanic like me...!!! Thank you sooo very much... BTW, look again at your drawing and you can see that other way of doing it...!!!

hank you for doing these videos. I find them very helpful, and I continue to be amazed at what we can do with 2 sticks and some yarn. Stay safe. Patty
