In the old days you didn’t step on stage without good calves. Crazy how they don’t count today.

technically speaking they are more important than biceps
biceps are FLEXED in 3 poses-FDB/SC/BDB.MM too but arent THE bodypart in that pose, not even close
calves are flexed in both back poses, both side poses ad ofc are darn important in the 4 quarter turns( where biceps dont matter at all since the arms are extended).
Calves are also one of the body parts that define bb symmetry along side capped delts, lats forearms and waist while biceps dont..
The judges havent cared for 2 decades, in the 90s most guys had calves

Hoping things trend toward this hierarchy in the near future:
S: chest, lats, quads (largest muscles should receive the most attention)
A: delts, abs, traps, hamstrings (absolutely need these to fill out a frame have great structure)
B: biceps, triceps, glutes (can be very aesthetically pleasing/glaring, but shouldn’t break an otherwise solid physique if they don’t pop)
C: forearms, lower back, calves (I think modern bodybuilding actually does a good job of weighing these proportional to their overall size)
D: neck (just unsure how to grade this objectively, don’t think I could ever justify saying someone’s physique is better because of his neck)

    • @usmilitary280
      @usmilitary280 2 роки тому +2

Modern classic is essentially Old school meets new school and get's a baby called classic. There's still a massive focus on Delts, lats, Quads and hamstrings, and triceps with less on the Christmas tree, calves, forearms and biceps, all golden era essentials body parts. The only thing they do really different in modern classic compared to open is that almost all guys have good structure and insertions and have an exceptionally small waist line which gives them a nice and full yet aesthetic appearance. Personally, Modern classic is my favorite form of bodybuilding.

They are valued differently than any other muscle group tho, because you don't want to have massive developement there, just great conditioning, something that you wouldn't want for lats, delts, calves, chest for example so glutes matter but not in the same manner.

Now one thing for sure, lats are the most important bodypart as they give you taper from the front, and are the most important piece in the back poses. Delts are the second most important part probably as they complete the taper effect. Biceps are secondary, Dorian Yates won 4 Olympias with a torn bicep and generally they can be downplayed when weak. But (and this is a huge one) bodyparts are important in the context of a pose, in one pose one bodypart is key (chest in the most muscular) and in another one is irrelevant or completely secondary (chest from the back or in a front double biceps) so this list is fun but there are so many factors involved, that it's going to be a bit too subjective, as you might value a bodypart in a pose differently, like chest in the side chest; you say nowadays the chest is less important but I don't agree as they are the main flexing muscle in the upper body, even if nowadays guys turn to the front and make it more about the arms and delts (witch are extended not flexed) it doesn't mean it judges require that, it's more so a lot of people doing it wrong. Same for calves except for Ronnie all Mister Olympias that lasted more than one year had good calves, from Dorian to Jay to Phil and even Kai, Shawn Rhoden and Branch had calves as most of the guys in the 90's like Nasser, Paul, Shawn Ray, Chris Cormier... So it's more lack of talent nowadays than the judges rewarding lack of calves.
And glutes are a strange story, as they are not valued on their own merits (aka they are big and well developed) rather because they generally mean great conditioning (not always because some guys are genetically more predisposed to have striations here) so they shouldn't be valued in the same manner as you value lats, pecs, biceps, triceps or even the mistreated calves for example, because having too big glutes is not advantagious, having other muscle groups too big damages your balance a bit but doesn't make you look stupid, so at the end of the day they are the same as the midsection, you need to have them defined but not massive in size.

Really interesting, and great content. Completely agree on the modern bodybuilding ranking, but not so much on the old school bodybuilding. Old school bodybuilding really did focus on aesthetics and proportions, and throughout the 70's and 80's conditioning became more important. When Frank Zane discusses important muscle groups being key for an aesthetic physique he typically calls out four areas, shoulders, waist, calves and forearms ... the peripheral groups that showcase your silhouette. After that it was chest and biceps, followed by back and triceps. Then next level would be quads, and the bottom level would be glutes and hammies. Historically it is interesting, prior to Samir in 83 the back was not uppermost in consideration, but after this it shot up to top level, Haney and Dorian won because they had superior back development. Some people point out Arnolds back development, but in truth that is based on his twisting back shots, which he mainly did to hide his wide waist. Many bodybuilders prior to Dorian actually had relatively small quads, and hammies, but it didn't matter provided they were separated and conditioned, and the calves helped provide leg balance. As mass became more important the higher priority aesthetic areas became less important, the only muscle group that remained at the top was the delts, because wide shoulders and a great V-taper are key even in modern bodybuilding.

In the non competitive bro culture, legs in general (especially glutes and adductors) and delts are extremely ignored. We've all seen dudes with arms thicker than their thighs and when their not on drugs, they have to train their delts and traps more. Huge arms with small shoulders and traps looks horrible to me.

      @TheLusianPopa 2 роки тому +2

most gym bros focus on the mirror/beach muscles-bis, chest, abs and to a lesser extent delts, back and legs are an afterthought, and calves, forearms, traps....hardly anyone ever trains them. You even get stared at when you do...

There's two ways you can look at this list. You can look at what the actual judges of the big shows weigh more heavily or you can just rank which muscle groups you yourself favor. For example arms are important to win a show but I myself never really look at biceps, I never look at calves or forearms, or asses. I look at midsection flow, lat insertions, chest shape, shoulder shape, side legs and conditioning. I'd be a horrible judge for an actual show though and I absolutely know that. I also often prefer things that most people do not, such as higher lat insertions, really low lats just look strange to me.

  • @FacelessOfficial1

let's see how much we agree as we go:
abs: your choice is B, mine is C (and even maybe D but you said it includes the waist size which actually plays a role lately)
biceps: we agree at A I think
calves: we agree at D (and saddly they would be at E if it was included)
    Shoulders: we agree at S
Forearms: we agree at C (although maybe they are one of the reasons Phil was considered so complete at the arm department and was SO succesfull so maybe they could be B??)
Glutes: we almost agree at A but I'd say it's more of an S, because as you said they are a mark of conditioning AND are visible on both back and side poses..
Hamstrigs: we agree at A ..............................minus
    Lats: we agree at S
Lower back: could be a B (lower lat insertion and stuff) but we pretty much agree at C
Neck: should actually be not visible on the open class (what tier is that?)
Pecs: yep they are pretty much a B (although they are a mark of conditioning also AND they give torso thickness)
    Quad: S
Traps: we agree at B I guess
    Triceps: we agree at A

Always look forward to your analysis videos Tom.
Btw while I definitely agree with you in that forearms are nice to have but not necessary, I think one instance where they really stood out for me is in the 2014 Phil vs Kai Mr. O matchup and were, IMHO, pivotal in giving Phil just that tiny extra edge in securing the title. It just made (and still makes) a lot of his poses so complete and full compared to Kai (or anybody for that matter).

Hey Tom, massive nerd here. Tier lists are designed to form a bell curve, I agree with the ranking of importance that you have come up with, but I would have only quads in S tier, shoulders lats and glutes in A, then triceps biceps and hamstrings in B, C and D as is. Then you have a perfect 1-3-6-3-1 bell curve :)
