This was my childhood. Chip's Challenge, Rodents Revenge and Castle of the Winds I & II. I played them all the time. They're such wonderful games!
PPSSSTTT, it's on steam, remastered, along with a second one. AND A LEVEL EDITOR! AND RUNS ON MODERN OPERATING SYSTEMS! WOWZERS
and there is also Mods, so you can have the classic sounds affects and graphics from windows or lynxs version too!!!
Steam version now has the old Windows version too. There's even an option to turn off smooth scrolling. It practically recreates the old play style too.

I played Chips Challenge when I was a lot younger (maybe 8 or 9 years old - I'm 23 now). I still have all the level passwords I wrote down all those years ago. Fantastic game. :)
This was the only game on my high schools library computer, we only had one of them with it installed.....so we would have a signup sheet, was such a fun game back then :)
you know, the name didnt really ring a bell so when you started with "you'll remember this!" I was pretty doubtful. Then I saw that god damn sprite again and it suddenly came back in a rush. I played the crap out of that thing when I was like... 6?
The DOS version is Steve Urkel's Challenge.

Yes, i was hoping you would do this. I played the hell out this game when i was little. I remember the green monsters would scare me. My older brother knew the codes to all the high levels.
oh wow, I had completely forgotten about this game. so many hours playing this as a kid ... I was awful at it but it was indeed fun.
Oh wow, the song you chose at the end... got major flashbacks to my Windows 95 days when it came with these MIDI tunes. I had no idea why, but I loved listening to them as a kid.
Ah, I can still remember the combinations of movement when going through the ice mazes!

I can't believe your comment has been here all this time and nobody has said thank YOU for Chip's Challenge (and Chuck's Challenge too). Believe it or not, I bought a Lynx when it came out expressly to play Chip's Challenge and never regretted it. It's remains the best puzzle game I have ever played (and I've played just about everything in my 35+ years with computers and video game consoles). Thank you, Chuck.

when I was going through old videos on tape to capture them and turn them digital for my Mom and Dad I discovered a 5 year old me playing on an old windows 95 PC playing chips challenge, damn, I remember making it all the way to level 88 as a kid, came back to it as an adult and I still as challenging as when I was a child. I was actually pretty good at this game as a 5 year old.

This game was fun to solve in Windows 3.1. There were so many levels that it was crazy. My younger brother and I teamed up to solve each level and write all the passwords on paper. We didn't have Internet service to cheat with.

I loved this game! I used to play it on our family gateway all the time. The ms entertainment pack was was awesome! It's what got me into gaming if you can believe it!

I used to play around with a "Chip's Challenge" editor a few years ago, and that was actually incredibly fun;
it was very satisfying to place objects and enemies all over the place, and then test those levels.
If only there was a way to get this frickin' thing to work on modern systems that DOESN'T involve DOSBox or Steam...

I had this on a little NEC machine from the 98 era that had a tiny, blurry as hell screen. It actually helped.
And especially the lack of any kind of scrolling
Steam version fixes all of that. It looks really good.

Loved this when I was younger!
I had a Lynx as a kid, and this game for it. Loved it, played it for hours and hours at a time. Still love the theme tune now.
As a 3D modeler, I found the password for the "BRUSHFIRE" level way funnier than I should have.
I first played the Windows version of Chip's Challenge on my Dad's Windows 95 PC, that came with Best Of Entertainment. 3 years ago I bought the Lynx version, owning a Lynx II. The version of Chip's Challenge on my Dad's PC didn't have the Canyon.mid song, but I understand some versions do have, I heard it playing right at the end of this video, I wonder why only some versions came with that MIDI file.
Every version of the game didn't include Canyon.mid, the game did play Canyon.mid IF you had Windows 3.1 -> Windows 2000, Canyon.mid is on the Windows folder, so, if you had Canyon.mid on the Windows folder, it did play thru the game.

There was definitely a level editor and level packs for the Windows version available in the late 90s through a Chip’s Challenge newsgroup. My cousin and I used to make levels for each other.
I remember playing this game on a computer we in the family owned at some point around 2000ish. That version actually did have a level editor. Which was useful, because I wasn't able to clear level 9. It also had a level around the 50s that was completely empty, leaving me to edit in a level-clear object. After that, it had around 100 more levels until the preexisting levels were over.
Awww yeah! Thanks for the nostalgia! Those bug monsters inspired the same kind of panic, in me as that abominable butt-bag of a snowman at the end of Ski-free.
There's a Chip's Challenge level editor now-a-days and yes. I use to play this game a lot when I was young.

"Accidentally deleted my game", you sure it wasn't on purpose?
To delete a saved game, all you'd have to do is press F2 or choose a new game.

I've invested a good amount of hours into this game and as of right now I don't have a way of playing it, but hopefully I'll be able to play it some time later in my life.

Chuck's Challenge improves upon the flaws of the original game (except for the controls) by making them smaller, more about logical thinking rather than trail and error, and providing a fair challenge that doesn't involve mazes or time limits. Also if you die or make a mistake, you can use the rewind feature to undo your actions and try again. Also, not only does it have a level editor, but it also has a community that lets you share them online.
Probably being lazy here, what is the midi track at the end? I recognise it but not where it is or where from.
Also, have a copy of Evolution (Now M-audio) midi editing software to review? I'd love to get my hands on a copy that which isn't "gold studio" which appears to be a different/more updated version.

chip's challenge is awesome, it's the one reason you'd want to emulate Windows 3.1 through dosbox.
Great game! It actually inspired me to write a fanfiction about B.J. Blazkowiz/Doomguy trapped in a supercomputer.
Oh man I had this game! My grandma had it on disk for Windows 98. I played the absolute crap out of this when I was like 9 or 10. This or Mahjong, and Nirvana or Alice in Chains was a great chunk of my time with that old refurbished Compaq.

I must have had 100's of hours into this game, and kept a document with all of the level passcodes. (no internet.. heh..) It is still one of my favorite puzzle games of all time.
