Years ago at my home slope (Bwlch) a guy was flying a Cambrian BF109 without an engine. A passer by asked to join in, of course he was welcome. Came back a few minutes later with a Flair SE5 with the prop removed and proceeded to try and get on the tail of the BF109, he was too slow but it was great fun! If it flies with a motor then it can fly without one in the right conditions!
In my long-distant youth flying model aircraft, we used to talk about penetration (innocently!) which I now would look at in terms of inertia and drag. The SE5 is light and draggy, and even the comparatively mild updraught from the wind against the cliffs forces it to be flown nose down. Great video as always!
Well you just had the best week of weather I can remember. We were just the other side of Newquay last week and I nearly dropped by to see if you were on the slopes...
John, once again you've proved that you can fly rocks in just the right amount of wind! Un believable!!!! Thanks it really is A memorial day!!? Enjoy .. Ed I Phoenix Arizona writes the
Each time I think you can´t bring a further surprise, I´m luckily wrong! It is not so much amazing that even a biplane is flying as a glider at that slope. But it is amazing how well it seems to fly. Big thanks to you, John.
Brings back memorys of when i would slop soar a 2 channel 1/2a foam cub spotter plane in od green looking for downed pilots. Great times thank you folks. 👍😊
You know the next comment will ask for a Fokker triplane. Oh, wait, that is me! What about a slope soaring Snoopy dog house? Never would have guessed a biplane would slope soar so well. It definitely rides the gusts tighter. Guessing it is really low wing loading. Very cool!
Torrey Pines in California is about like this cliff, maybe not as high but the thing back in the 70's was to take a control-line profile model and rig it with ailerons and elevator control, vertical eight starting from the bottom anyone.
Did that with a quarter scale Spacewalker down in Lucas Kansas at Lake Wilson on the main hill. A lot draggy but fun. Just gotta love sloping bricks. Keep up the great videos!
Slope soaring when done properly is such a graceful art. Has anyone ever built a sport scale model of a World War Airspeed Horsa glider for slope soaring? They're not exactly what one would call a performance glider, but they sure did their job in WW2.
In one former life I worked with an elder squadron leader who told of taking off into the wind ,in a sopwith camel I believe, throttle back and then land all in a reverse loop so to speak. That SE5a wanted to fly even before it left your hand right at the start ! Wings a'quiver ! 😆
I once slope flew a Piper Cub minus a prop thinking it would have flown nicely. Even with lots of rudder throw, it kinda flew like a slug. It was entertaining but I didn’t try it again after that time.
Nice one! 🍻I’ve often wondered why more pilots don’t glide biplanes. (A bit draggy, for sure, but they look so gorgeous in the blue.) I got back late tonight but decided to Chuck my rebuilt Gentle Lady up anyway. There was almost no wind and the air felt heavy but something was right: I found myself sloping right outside my back door! Time to start building an Esprit!
This was great, i have been impressed by every warbird, but this one is a best yet for me as i just love bipes. My Pitts being my pride an joy. motorless bipe, Thats just cool!
Your skills as a pilot leave me feeling a bt inadequate. On the plus side, is that you nudged me into building a Big Lazy Bee. Need to get your brother an Fokker triplane and dogfight it out on the slope!
John, that's a really nice model! Am I correct in believing your secret to keeping this one in the sky was to avoid rolling past 15 degrees unless there was adequate headwind to avoid a stall?
Yes, it’s a really light model but and also a very draggy shape. I needed to keep it flying into the wind most of the time because turning towards the slope, or too steep, meant it blew back really fast.
It’s a hard question but I’d probably say some of my all time favourites are, Gentle Lady, Wildthing, Dart, Sinbad, Leprechaun, Ocean Breeze. All for different reasons.
It is balanced correctly. It’s a very lightweight styrofoam model with lots of drag so it’s having to continually fly ‘nose down’ into the strong oncoming wind just to try and penetrate forward. It’s effectively having to fly downhill just to try and keep the airspeed up and stop being blown backwards over the hill. The first flight it was slightly tail heavy making it very unstable in pitch and almost unflyable. I added a bit more nose weight and it flies fine. To fly in these kind of winds it actually needs more weight adding over the CG. This keeps the model balanced but increases the overall weight of the glider. This helps it fly faster which means it can penetrate the wind without the need for continual down being added.
Got to admit that I have never seen a WW1 biplane flying as a glider, but now I have, I am very impressed. Such a beautiful sight!
And with a front (radiator grill) like a scaled down house brick!
Thus the angle of attack.
lol

Man, your lucky to have such a fantastic spot to fly this plane!
Just what the world needed a return of biplane slopers!!! well done sir
SE5a wow that's special and a moving episode, an old mate built one never forgot it.

that looks like so much fun!!! just picked up a used SE5a!!!
Wow that was beautiful to watch! Awesome video and great flying man
Thank you!
Você é um mestre na arte de fazer planadores John, parabéns.
John .....
The" magic invisible string "man !!!!
Well you just had the best week of weather I can remember. We were just the other side of Newquay last week and I nearly dropped by to see if you were on the slopes...
Seems to be flying at the extreme edge of it's ability! Nicely done, quite an interesting video!
This has to be one of my top three favorites of your planes! Wow!
"Poetry in motion"! Great flying! Thanks for sharing!!! 👍👏
Thank you!
That was a laugh John, I use profile pilots a lot, quick to print out and could even be you, great video as usual, cheers 👍
Interesting to see a more obvious nose down attitude near the slope.
Love an SE5a

Wow that was Super! I never would have thought a bi plane could be a glider! Thanks for sharing.

snoopy house ? seconded!

Torrey Pines is higher!

👀 Wow !! ❤❤❤❤💘
... I'm definitively conquered !! 😯
Between your magical hands , anything can become a glider !! 😄😅 👏👏👏👏👍
beautifull build. performs nice.
Love it, a gorgeous model.
Unsual glider, nicely made and flown.

I have a kit for a Waco glider but haven’t made a start on it yet.,
i do remember Glyn at St Agnes some time back slope soaring an MFA yamamoto. To be compliant with the no prop rule, he took the prop off..
The most improbable "glider" that you have featured so far. Wonderful!
If John was born early enough he would have given us manned flight before Orville and Wilbur.

Apparently everything is a glider if there is enough wind. Was great to watch this plane!
A thing of beauty! 💖
Wanderful Johan! 🇸🇮❤️❤️❤️
Wonderful!

Well this just put a smile on my face!
Very Gooooooooooooood
That looked a handful on the controls 😊 Lively little buggar 👍
Love the scale models of active aircraft. Maybe add a pilot in silhouette?
This was great, i have been impressed by every warbird, but this one is a best yet for me as i just love bipes. My Pitts being my pride an joy. motorless bipe, Thats just cool!
Great model! one of these days you will finally relent and give us a build video!!
Nice one john,,,,watch out for the HUN in the sun..🤣🤣🤣👍👍
With a biplane!!! Cooool!!!
By any chance where I could find the plans of it!??
To build one too!!
Brilliant ! Love it
Your Models Look very Pretty in The wind, Especially this one without prop, small but elegant nonetheless
Your skills as a pilot leave me feeling a bt inadequate. On the plus side, is that you nudged me into building a Big Lazy Bee. Need to get your brother an Fokker triplane and dogfight it out on the slope!
Alte Wahrheit. Doppeldecker sind viel mehr fähig, als so manche "Fachleute" glauben.👏👌👍
Fabulous!!!
Dude , what can't you make fly? :-D ...beautifully
👍 Очень красиво,и музыка и видео с моделью самолёта биплана,недавно об этом думал !!
That's a real beauty!
Verry nice 😃
Awesome and epic
Sweet flying!
Brings back images of Biggles
Its like a glider just the wings wings are cut in half. Darren
Make it light. Remove the engine? Move the cg? It's cool as could be! Like everything you fly!
Funny to watch it continuously diving UP!
A slope is golden.
Simplemente excelente
cool, looks fun
It soars, but it looks "nose-light" by the look of the elevator always being set to "down" - did you remove the battery-pack?
John, that's a really nice model! Am I correct in believing your secret to keeping this one in the sky was to avoid rolling past 15 degrees unless there was adequate headwind to avoid a stall?

Nice PSS !
John, looks very good. I have one of these to build but no interplanetary / cabana struts - how long are they?
Hi there. The cabana struts are 100mm long. The outer struts are 140mm long.
Where can I get the plans for that mate it looks so cool, my favourite planes are ww1 planes
It’s just a Styrofoam park-flier model I got from a swap meet for £5, so it didn’t have any plans.
COOL!
certainly not an ideal slope model, but well done as usual..
NICE !
Hi.
Did you add some extra weight in the nose to maintain the correct cg position? It has such a short nose section compared to the long tail.
Yes, I did need to add some extra weight in the nose.
If you had to choose the top 5 gliders, what would they be?
It’s a hard question but I’d probably say some of my all time favourites are, Gentle Lady, Wildthing, Dart, Sinbad, Leprechaun, Ocean Breeze. All for different reasons.
maravilhoso.
Please do a Fokker Triplane and dogfight someone. 🥺🙏
That's outrageously irresponsible. I want to try it now! 🤪
Model appears to be James McCudden's SE5a
Very cool, have you ever made and flown a Spitfire glider John?
I had an electric Ripmax Spitfire many years ago but I’ve never tried gliding one. Maybe one day…..
I hope that day comes sooner rather than later.
Help !Due a possible navigation mistake, I'am not flying over Germany...This landscape looks as California... Help me ! 😭
I think John could fly a brick if challenged!!!!
Show
Is that a Scorpio se5?
Yes it is.
@@SlopeRCGliders I thought so....I've got one ..briiant model..shame there non longer made
🤗👍🌞🌈💜
I have 3 hours in my log book on the real thing. :)
No propulsion needed! Lol
De Havilland Tiger Moth
First airplane to fly from Australia to Tasmania by sun nav mate!!
A little twitchy - I wouldn't want to be the guy who broke that model.
the three things you need to fly are ,airspeed, airspeed and airspeed
Needs more tail weight for more realistic level flight.
This helps it fly faster which means it can penetrate the wind without the need for continual down being added.
Mayday mayday my engine failed 🤔😰
