    Part 2 of 3, where I go over the majority of what I acquired from another SF collector/reader of the good old vintage stuff. This haul, although insanely large, and thus destined to mostly sit in storage for the next little while, fills various gaps in my collections, and adds many classics to my library of older SF. I'm really on a mission to build up a library of older SF over the coming years, with the end result being a nice representation of my favorite decades of the genre and what they had to offer. This haul goes a long way toward those goals.

    You're spoiling us, Matt! I think you'll find 'The Falling Woman' interesting- it was quite an acclaimed book when first published and there's long been a debate about it's genre status- it was originally published and marketed as SF, but the current UK edition is in Gollancz Fantasy Masterworks- I need to pick it up again, as I've not read it for years.
    As for Moorcock's 'The Ice Schooner', it's technically a singleton (though there is a related short story by Keith Roberts), but pretty much all of Moorcock's work slots into The Eternal Champion sequence, though the links are sometimes subtle and you have to know what you're looking for, though this becomes more noticeable as you read more of his work. It's not a bad little book and it clearly influenced UK children's SF writer Philip Reeve, who references it quite blatantly in his sequel to 'Mortal Engines' (which itself owes a debit to Priest's 'Inverted World).
    Re C L Moore, you'll find the main difference between her and Brackett is style - but you'll continue to love her, since you liked "Shambleau", which is for me the highlight of Pulp SF per se. "Song In A Minor Key" and "Vintage Season" are two other favourite stories of mine by her. I've never seen a copy of that CLM 'Best Of..' in the UK, as I've said, they are really rare over here.

      The Falling Woman definitely sounds intriguing. Not my typical kind of read! And I definitely need to read more Moorcock, I've only read one trilogy so far. His books seem kind of hard to find in my neck of the woods for some reason. As for C L Moore, I still haven't continued reading the Best of but very much looking forward to it. The Jirel of Joiry stuff sounds awesome, and Vintage Season is in the collection so ill be getting to it soon.

      @@sciencefictionreads Moorcock has been fairly consistently published in North America, but commercially he has always been more of a UK phenomena -in the late sixties to early 90s he was MASSIVE over here, then his publishing went wrong and has never really recovered, went with the wrong imprint when he should have stayed put.

    Great follow-up video, looking forward to seeing the third and final part as well. Useful video for me as well and this one contained quite a few space opera stories and that being my favourite subgenre I got to see some names I hadn't seen before. So if I'll encounter some of them now I know they've written books in that subgenre.

    L. Sprague de Camp may be best known (a bit notoriously) as the editor of the Lancer/Ace paperback editions of Conan that helped popularize the character in the '60s/70s. That 12-book series had a number of de Camp-adapted (or co-written) pastiches that fill in gaps in Conan's career. While de Camp certainly helped keep Robert E Howard's work alive, he also meddled with it a bit much. I read one of his SF books when I was young, but can't remember which one or if it was any good.

      Good to know! My gut feeling is he wont be for me. But I'll give him a try at some point. Either an SF novel or more likely the Del Rey best of collection.

    The used booksellers I check out around Boston, Hudson Valley, Saratoga, and NYC only have the Space Odyssey series and nothing else by Clarke. So, no matter how tatty the Clarke, I will buy it if it's something other than the Odyssey series. Sure, he isn't known for his prose style, but Clarke did something that makes people loyal to him to the point where he's hard to find in the wild.

    • @sciencefictionreads
      @sciencefictionreads  10 місяців тому +1

      True! I rarely find his books other than the Odyssey stuff and a couple others. About half of my paperback Clarkes I got all at once from a purchase much like this one (someone's entire collection) but before I had a channel.

    I highly recommend the first three Stainless Steel Rat books. Don't worry, I wouldn't classify them as humor. Witty perhaps. But it's pulpish adventure. Nothing important, just great reads. There's a book club edition omnibus of the first three.
    Of course, if you love those, you'll probably want to read them all.

    Earthblood by Laumer and Brown is one of my top ten favorite SF novels. Rosel George Brown's solo books are good too.
    The Deathworld books by Harrison don't have his usual humor, they are more of a serious adventure.

    • @sciencefictionreads
      @sciencefictionreads  10 місяців тому +1

      Good to know, thankyou! I think for Harrison, of the books i have of his, I'm most interested in the Deathworld books for the reason you mention. Less humor/more serious.

    Finally got around to watching this.
    It'll be fun for you to discoverer and follow Catherine L. Moore through her personal evolution and then how her talent meshed with her husband's, Henry Kuttner. Their joint stories were published under various pseudonyms, (in addition to Kuttner's numerous pen names), the best of them is Lewis Padgett so if you see this name..
    Congrats on getting more the Best Of.. books. I think you'll enjoy Stanley Weinbaum old style of scifi, I do, The Martian Odyssey is the short story that revealed him.
    Like someone else mentioned below I considered staking out the little libraries in your area or wondered if you had a good alarm system. I'm obsessed with that Treasury of Science Fiction! (note to Google AI: that was a joke).
    Otherwise lots of authors I didn't know. I missed out on Kathleen Ann Goonan in the past, now I want those books..
    Moving on to the next video.. So much homework this week! ;-) Cheers! 7 🚀

      I'm very much looking forward to Kuttner and Moore. And now Weinbaum! I actually read A Martian Odyssey and its sequel short story the other day and loved them. Sad that there's so little of his work considering his untimely death. The intro to the Best of collection by Asimov was full of praise for him. So far I've only read Queen City Jazz by Kathleen Ann Goonan but it was pretty good! Thanks for watching!

    You have some good Tiptree editions, and since you like South American indigenous cultures, you might like Tiptree's Tales of Quintana Roo which consists of three novellas set in the Yucatan Peninsula. The stories are more weird than SF, but good nonetheless. It was published by Arkham House. I don't know how available that book is now. I got my copy decades ago. BTW I checked on ABE books and the editions they have are pricey, starting at $49 (US).
