- Here I test out a 'REAL Turmat' pulled pork with rice dry meal from Base Camp Food. The REAL Turmat meals are expensive, so I wanted to try one out to find out if they're worth it and what makes them so expensive vs. other alternatives.
I also used this as an opportunity to try out my new alcohol stove. I've always used gas stoves but was intrigued by the alcohol ones, so I bought one from Amazon to try out and see what all the fuss was about...
So with my bag packed with the stove and meal I headed out for a short hike around Shirley and Osmaston near Derby to take in some of the scenery and try the kit out in the field.

Food while walking/backpacking seems to be a matter of taste (if you’ll excuse the pun). I put together my own freeze dried meals for car camping. For example, 1 Mugshot pasta packet makes a pleasant snack while two make a meal. Add soy mince and freeze dried peppers, or carrots and onions, and you have a bolognese-type meal. Mugshots cost 80p but you can often buy them for 50p. OR take 100g couscous and add seasoning, soy chunks, freeze dried peas, sweet corn, onion etc, add hot water and you have a hot meal after 8-10 mins. There’s a good choice of freeze dried veg and fruit on EBay. They’re not too expensive if bought in small quantities (you only need a tablespoon of this or that for each meal). For me, being vegetarian, these meals work well. Look out for Minute rice or quick porridge oats too. I put together a range of breakfast porridge’s which are tasty and filling. All cost a fraction of the branded freeze dried meals. But, you get best results with freeze dried veg and fruit. If possible, avoid dehydrated veg (there is a difference between the two). You can by these by the kilo on EBay but they’re nowhere near as good for homemade camping meals. Finally, the ingredients for one meal are stored in a plastic bag. I reconstitute them in a GSI Fairshare Mug and eat them from the mug.

@@DaleyOutdoors I’m not very good at using UA-cam. I have a picture I could have attached and could provide a link to my original web find: a lady in the USA who makes meals using freeze dried ingredients for her husband and sons when they go backpacking. I mentioned that I use a GSI Fairshare Mug to reconstitute my meals. I also have a set of GSI nesting bowls. The inner is insulated and has a lid. Each bowl holds circa 500ml. I can also make my meals in the lidded bowl which then fits into a Gram Counter pouch to keep it warm while ‘cooking’. If readers don’t want to buy the Gram Counter pouch they can use an Amazon pouch-type A4 bag/envelope which Amazon use to send books etc. It works the same way and costs nothing. Although I have some super GSI pans, Teflon lined, etc, and can make a ‘proper’ meal in them, I like the simplicity of just adding hot water. Re alcohol stoves: I have a Trangia 27 and a Mini. I recently cooked a Sunday dinner using both (apple sauce, 4 veg snd a vegetarian pulled pork burger).

Here's a couple recipes:
Packet of microwave rice.... Just eat it... They don't need heating. 🤪
Morning breakfast:
in a small zip lock:
40g porridge' oats
10g powdered milk,
10g sugar.
Put in a mug, Add hot water, stir.
Instant porridge for a few pence a portion.
Packet cous cous, add water, chop up a pepperami and throw in.
Idaho mash potato packet
Ziplock bag with 20g frozen sweet corn.
Add hot water to mash, add sweetcorn, eat.
Take a potlesss pot noodle... Easy peasy, just empty a pot noodle contents into a ziplock bag. Then when you want to eat it, empty it into a mug, add hot water, stir, enjoy.
Or... Failing all that...
Take cheese sarnies and a tomato cup a soup. Dip sarnies in soup to eat. 😉😜
Where do you get your freeze dried veg
As a Brit in Norway I got an early introduction to REAL Turmat and have consumed many over the years. They are tasty filling meals, never found anything better, and NEVER regret the extra few quid when on a week long trek and wanting to look forward to food rather than force it down. Top stuff in my book!

Grats on 2k subscribers Ben, was laughing at the culture shock on changing to the alcohol stove. Patience is key 😂 I too use the clear bio-ethanol fuel like someone mentioned earlier, takes about 5 minutes to boil up your hot choc in a low wind. Atb Steve

I use a little bcb firedragon, either with a gel fuel tab or a 'hobo stove' I made myself out of an old shoe polish tin stuffed with coiled stove rope & then add alcohol/meths onto it, burns for 15 mins+.
Also love my Honey Stove, folds down flat, burns twigs or can be configured to hold an alcohol burner.

I use bio ethanol for my Trangia - it is quite cheap from B&Q - a 2l bottle is £8.

Hey Ben glad to watch you try it an alcohol stove. For me it's my go to, find my trangia to be about 50% slower than by fire maple canister stove - so about 5-6 mins for a large cup of water approx 250-300ml say. Points I have learned. Slightly wider pot seems to help with a lid, plus a good windshield. Also hacienda bio ethanol from b&q, no water dilution- as everyone else said...
Finally, a pot stand that has the bottom of the pot between 3-4 cm from the top of the stove. Someone has done studies out in the interweb and that is the ideal height for quicker boils. Finally, not all alcohol stoves have the same flame pattern/jets. I know it's a little pricier, but a genuine trangia is still yours for only £10ish and you have a stand already...👍😀

I have that exact same stove. The pot stand is (almost) useless. Your cooking pot needs to be 1" - 1.5" above the top of the stove. To achieve this with that stand you have to sit the stand (right way up) on top of the burner. The locator tabs inside the stand are just for stopping the burner rattling about during transport. Throw the stand in a drawer and use something else (I use a wood stove). With the right set-up these are great little stoves, especially when used with the flame adjuster. I love alcohol stoves. I bought that pot stand thing you have and found every time I used it that it really stifles the flame and prevents the burner working properly. The bit you used to raise it off the ground is a far better option as a pot stand and should speed up your boil time considerably.

Ayup! Good vid, nice place. Yeah I use both alcohol and gas stoves, if am going on a long one day I use the alcohol stove, I’ve got the trangia with the lil cross thing pot stand, I use alcohol from B&M cheap as chips, me personally I don’t mix with water, never had any issues. Like you said does take that but more time but if your sat on a hill some place it’s doesn’t really matter. If am camping like next week I’ll use my gas as it’ll be used more, brewing/cooking and what not. Think I’ll get one of them pot stands though as it’s easier to snuff the flame out and save fuel, rather than tryna take a hot cross stand off first. All the best look forward to your next vid 👍

Great vid and good to see you out and not stuck behind a desk, I've been looking at or making my own fuel burner (out of a shoe polish tin ) and judging by other vids I've seen it seems that they do take that long to boil, not sure if you had a lid on the pot ? But that seems to speed it up slightly, got those panther trousers btw absolutely love them mate, can see me getting a few more pairs, I did a short vid in them other day when I hiked up into the cleveland hills and got caught in a snow storm it's on my channel if you wanna look, but they preformed brilliant so cheers for that, when did you say you were raffling the hilliberg off ?? 😂😂😂

@@DaleyOutdoors wife loves them too, oh been in Asda today and they have more camping stuff in, I got a fold flat dog water bowl for a quid comes with a little carribiner as well, also a small mag lite type torch but it also pulls down to become a tent lamp only 2 quid and my worst buy a 2.50 compass look alike of the Silvia ones but this points in any direction but north 🤣🤣🤣 you must be due a wild camp soon mate ?? 😉

@@DaleyOutdoors Thanks pal, i make my own meals - that way i know what's in them. plus it's about 8 quid cheaper! I got a food flask and that works great and a plastic mug with locking top with a pin hole to let steam out. The flask keeps food hot for 5 hours that i know it does, i think the company claim longer.
Firstly, another very nice and gentle vid. Meths not only smells but it soots up your pots horribly. I use white bio-ethenol fuel (vango do one) the neither smells and doesn't soot up nearly as much.LNT. All the best, CBB1

On point re the meal price Ben. A Brit 24hr ration pack for just over 10 quid for 3 meals and snacks. For me is a no brainer. Useful on days walk.

Don’t normally bother to comment on things but really enjoying the vids. Done a lot of hiking but not as much hiking/camping as I’d like, certainly not in recent times.
Got some gear I’ve had for a while that seem in good condition (Old Vango tent, name escapes me). Hope to get out camping, maybe if we ever get a summer (Though I can handle some rain!).
You must be well stocked up on gear with all these hauls! Sports Direct always seem as good a place as any for boots, often have Karrimor for reasonable price. Gonna check out, was it M&M as well.

I have a Trangia , a BRS3000 and a Jobsworth Jetboil style.
Trangia is nice as it's silent and relaxing, just set it up, leave it be, and relax in nature for 10 minutes.
BRS is nice as it's so light, in a heavier pack with miles to do, light stove is good.
Jobsworth / Jetboil is good if there's more than just me going and I'm boiling for 2.
Personally, I like BRS, I like Jobsworth / Jetboil but I love the Trangia.

Ah yes, the well known UK law of Bank Holiday rain 😂👍I'm glad you found a shelter. I like alcohol stoves, gas canisters make me nervous. I don't know why it took so long for your water to boil, maybe try less water next time. That meal seemed alright but for £9.99? 😲 The waterfall cured my shock 👌

Sorry I’m a bit late coming to the party but here are my thoughts, for what there worth😂 Yes the pulled pork was “expensive “ but you have to remember these meals are designed for the Norwegian Armed forces so a huge amount of research has gone into producing the product, also for whatever reason anything coming out of Norway is always going to be expensive! As for the stove, yes I think there was probably a tad to much water! 6-8min is an average sort of time you can expect, you must also make sure you use a wind shield fully, it will definitely help reduce boil times, as for the soothing really not a problem, just wipe the pot bottom on moss or grass to keep the worst off till you get home! Ps like most things in life you get what you pay for! The turmat meals are the gold standard for dehydrated meals for good reason. Thanks once again regards from deepest Dorset 👍

I enjoyed you trip. I watch a number of vids from America on stoves and have never seen them add water to the fuel. Interesting.
A few people say it helps reduce soot, and some say it's an old wives tale 😊
I am a fan of alchol stoves and own the same stove you have there as well as a proper trangia and some home made stoves. I like the fact you always know how much fuel you have with you and that you can take only the amount fuel you need saving space and weight in your pack. That did seem like a long boil time for an alcohol stove. It is important to always use a wind sheild with alcohol stoves and the sheild should surround the stove and pot as much as possible. Aslo getting the sheild close to the pot and stove helps to direct more of the heat to the pot. Cheers.

@@DaleyOutdoors Your wind sheild looks fine to me, I think it would have been more effective if you used the stove in its stand the correct way around and wrapped the wind sheild round it just leaving a gap for the pot handle to stick out. The cross pot stand should fit in the stove while the stove is in the stove stand, at lease it does in my stove and stand. Looking forward to seeing you give it another go.
U can flip the cross stand to get a bit more height, if ur looking for that 1 1/4" sweet spot. I've a titanium Evernew knockoff with 2 levels of burners, that I like for boiling water right quick, tho u can get a liter to boil on 1oz/30ml fuel if u have time (15-20min) and put ur pot on the first row, after it's bloomed & coming out of 2nd row of jets, no need for a pot stand, even. But with alcohol stoves, a windscreen is required. But for real cooking on an alcohol stove, it's hard to beat the trangia's simmer ring, or ur knockoff's simmer ring/snuffer. I have a Bushcraft Essential's Bushbox Ti knockoff pot stand/stove that'll accommodate the trangia's simmer ring at the right height, but also burn wood, or solid fuel, or even wood pellets!
I love alcohol stoves. Nice & quiet, doesn't throw off alot of light, if ur stealth camping, in fact it's difficult to see the flame during the day. And u can bring just enough fuel for a couple meals & a brew or 2, vs a canister stove, ur guessing & still have the weight of the canister.
I have canister stoves too, for when we have a fire ban during the summer.

I've never added water to my Trangia. I use the BushBox UL as a stand which also gives me the option of using it as a twig stove. I hated the height and instibility of my cheap gas stove. Looked like it would fall over at any second.
Some gas stoves can be terrible, most are ok if you add feet onto the canister

Try a MSR whisperlite International stove, a litre bottle of petrol lasts days. I have alcohol stoves and use bioethanol it burns cleaner.
Thanks for sharing buddy… i use bio fuel (from b&q) in my trangia , not diluted in any way… it’s very clean burning so no need to dilute… give that a go… takes about 7-8 min to boil approx 300ml for a coffee, so your timing for a larger water qty for a meal is prob not too far out… cheers

I got the same stove like you say to see what the fuss was about. It took such a long time to boil my water too, I didn’t dilute my meths either ????? Guess that’s just the way they burn. Thank you for your time and effort

I’ve found alcohol stoves are very slow compared to the gas stoves, a wind shield may help, I’ve not heard of the adding water to reduce the sooting of your pot before.

Long time Trangia user here..my oldest one dates from the last century!
Trangia burners are still better than the knock off copies,meths from home bargains or bio ethanol from b&q
But I'd encourage you to go home-made for the lightest/cheapest results..my corner shop is doing 2x 500ml bottles of alcohol hand gel for £1 currently,take the wax out of a tea-light and fill with gel,place inside small,clean tincan with a 75x25 mm slot cut out of one side..angle slot away from wind for integrated pot stand and wind shield
I carry 200 ml gel (50ml a day plenty for 2 meals and 2 drinks a day)
Total weight for stove and gel is 250g
Alocs do a copy of the alpkit bruler alcohol stove stand on aliexpress for a 1/3 of the price. Decent bit of kit and does away with the wind shield so saves some weight... Definitely worth adding to your alcohol stove collection that you've started 😉😏

Using that type of pot stand doesn't help the boil I've found, they distrupt the bloom and flame pattern. I had Real Turmat Chicken Tikka when I was in the peaks the other week. It was nice but not sure it was 9 quid nice. Lee

Another cracking video I like using meth stove when no need to rush some do take a while to bloom I use a pan with the fins underneath like on jet boils which speeds time up

I have never had any problems with soot using a meths burner and I don’t add any water to the fuel.
The brass will discolour due to the heat from the flame.
I find that it takes about 10 minutes to boil water but this varies depending on how much water is in your pot. So if you are in a hellfire hurry for a brew, forget about alcohol stoves!!
A good idea to smear a little Vaseline over the seal inside the lid of the stove.

Well you asked for it, alcohol: I have the red camp, a homemade Penny stove, a homemade cat can stove, a beer can stove, a Red Bull stove, a home made Altoids stove and last but not least a tuna can stove. Just the ones I use kinda often as the mood strikes, I have other's.
I have four different gas stoves not going to go into all of them right here, I have three different solid fuel stoves, I have a wood reburner, an Emberlit stove which can be used with wood, alcohol, solid fuel and pretty much anything else you want to put in it, I have a homemade coffee can stove, and these are just a few of my backpacking stoves. Not going into the car camping stoves, not enough space or time. They are all my favorite when I'm using it, 😁 I really love the alcohol stoves for the quite, not the speed and I love the wood stoves for the ambience and watching the cave man tv

@Daley Life Outdoors have you looked into how to make any of the alcohol stoves out of beer can, soda cans, Red Bull cans, and tuna cans, and things like that? One of my favorites of those is the cat can stove made out of a cat food can and a tomato paste can, or a tuna can and a slightly bigger can on the inside to give it more stability for a large pot. The cat can stove will boil almost as fast as a gas stove. If you work at it you can even set up a simmer ring for slow cooking.

I've found that if you're on a multi-day trip hiking 10 or more miles a day with scrambling and elevation changes in North America, you almost have to take some freeze-dried meals with you. The hiking meals are good but they can start being expensive if you use a lot!

I don't add water to meths but do test run a new stove to burn off the manufacturers finish. Second burn up should perform better.

Well done for having a go with the alcohol stove, I’ve been using the Trangia for years. A couple of tips to get the best out of it and improve the boil time:
1. Ditch the meths and use Bio -Ethanol, it’s cleaner, more efficient and much more environmentally friendly.
2. Adding water to the meths does cut the soot but it also reduces the heat it produces. Another reason to go Bio-Ethanol.
3. Use the pot stand the stove came with instead of the cross stand. The stoves have an optimum effective distance from stove to pot, normally around an inch and a half. The pot stand is made to factor that in. Those cross stands are ok, but you’re not going to get the best out of the stove.
Give it another go, I no longer use my gas stoves, Trangia all the way.
This meals you had are good aren’t they ? Agree they are very expensive though, the Summit to Eat are good value I think but I mostly cook fresh food when I go out.

Cheers Mark! I’ve just had a second attempt and it was much better - same fuel but used the pot stand as you say. The meal was by far the best I’ve had but it is reflected in the price. I will have the odd one for a treat though 😁

I prefer to cook on alcohol, I'm still experimenting with how much alcohol I would need to carry, I also prefer bio ethanol compared to meths

Meths is 1.75 for 500ml at home bargains in decorating section. I like it with coke on the rocks ( about 2gm). Sleep like a corpse. 🤣

I know REAL is "expensive" but i buy 2 per day im out camping just because they are really tasty, but if im only out for a day i cook my own food over a fire or on my trangia kitchen ✌

The problem with your review is that from the off you call Real Turmat a dehydrated meal, no it's not it's freeze dried, that is a totally different process & locks in a lot more of the flavors than the dehydrated process used in meals like Firepot and alike. And another thing alot of these cheap Mugshot/supernoodel type meals are full MSG. Heart attack in a bowl or the felling of????
Yeah I wasn’t aware of the different process when I made the video, though I was interested more in how it tasted than how it was made. Cheaper options can contain MSG but not many do these days. Thanks for watching 👍

REAL TURMAT MEALS - Are they worth it?
No. At £8-£10 for one small meal, they are not. If you are dead set on eating from packets you can buy a whole 24 hour MRE for £2.99p on E-bay.

I doubt its crap fuel...But it is a crap stove....Check out Lukes review of it on the Outdoor Gear review....Its a cheap Chinese rip off of the Trangia that performs very poorly
If I’m going alcohol, I use my trangia burner in the base of my firebox nano … that way the burner is a good way below the pot base and bolts water faster than it the flame is too close to the pot. I also use the denatured alcohol as it burns a bit cleaner…
