I believe that God allowed him actually "see" the wind because that would distract someone. Peter saw the effects of the wind all the time. Seeing the wind, something you aren't used to, will definitely make you lose focus on what is important. God can let you see the wind to get your attention.
Hi Tamra, You maybe right. I think, growing up on a boat, and being in and on the ocean since I was a child. There are times, when mountains are moving in the water.. is the best way I can describe it. When the wind is full of the sea, or rain and the sea. you see the wind, at least it seems it. I don't have to spiritualize that part. I give credit to Peter for getting out of the boat!! No one else did, lol. Yes, he became afraid when he took his eyes "off" Jesus, and looked at his circumstances. I think that is what God is showing us.. that and His great heart of mercy. He immediately responded to His child's fear and doubt. You maybe right sis. I just see another side of it. Having been in the elements when my heart was in my throat. (;-}
