My dearly departed husband took to this instrument like a duck to water. I was always mesmerised by that, considering the number of foot pedals and knee levers not forgetting what the hands are doing. He had some fine musicians around him too here in Scotland. Amazing instrument. The music lives on.
if! I had my life to live over again, the number one priority would be to learn how to play the pedal steel guitar, for God's glory. I love the steel guitar music.
David Cummins never to late to learn. I’m 69 and getting my first pedal steel in 2 days. My whole life I wanted to play this guitar and I’m finally going to do it.
As long as you have breath, go get one and play it. Even you you only learns parts of a song but you will love every second of it doing something you love.
The crying steel is what set the classic country apart from other music...and now with that instrument missing on most recordings...what was once country music is not in todays so called Nashville sound. The record labels need to take a step back and listen to your sound and realize that it's not country without a pedal steel...and when an instrumentalist like yourself comes along and does it right...it does not get any better. Great job Dave...you make it look so easy. Take Care Jim
here is no one that I have ever heard that can play the pedal steel like Dave. He is as good as it gets. If you look at what you have to do to play this machine, left foot controls pedals that make the strings change pitch. Under the fret board are four knee paddles that also make pitch change. On the right foot is the volume pedal. Now you have to know how to make the song come alive with the fingers. This instrument is probably one of the most difficult to ever play and to do it as well as Dave takes special talent and many years of practice. Thanks Dave for sharing your talent.
...and since there are no actual frets , just guidlines, a players " ear" for being in tune are crucial as is the philosophy of how to approach the song/ playing.
This is the classic country sound that attracted me to the pedal steel in the first place. Like that of John Hughey, Hal Rugg, Weldon Myrick, Sonny Burnette, Lloyd Green, Buddy Emmons, Jimmy Day, Ralph Mooney...the undisputed kings of steel. Dave...you're right up there with these iconic players. Keep the great music coming!
Davids vids are the only ones on youtube I give thumbs up to before I actually watch and listen. As a steel player myself, his playing and sound are something to strive for.
Was a Amazing moment when I set and watched Tammy sing this song. I know she meant every word of it, She would always tell us the story about how it came to be. This song meant so much to Tammy Wynette kevin j herman, chicago. usa

David, I always adore your choice of tunes to play and your technique and how you use it. you need to come to Centennial hall, Budweiser gardens or aeolian hall, in London, Ontario, Canada.

Plenty of other PSG players out there that match or surpass his playing. Don’t get me wrong, he’s excellent. But not the best.
