The third topic in the Virtual Piano Master Course is a six-video series titled The Imagination of Robert Schumann, with Claire Wachter as presenter and pianist. In this series, Claire explores the fascinating inner connections between Schumann's life and his compositions, which she calls the "biography" of Schumann's music.
Video 5 The Imagination of Robert Schumann: Kreisleriana, Op.16 and Album for the Young, Op.68. The fascinating ETA Hoffmann and his literary alter-ego Johannes Kreisler; Schumann's "new world;" Robert and Clara finally together; music inspired by family life; the wonderful world of the Album; pieces in the style of other composers (Elegy for Mendelssohn); exotic stories (Scheherazade); friendly folk (The Happy Farmer) and scary creatures (Krampus); comparison of the Album and Scenes of Childhood; the secret to understanding Schumann.
About the Artist: Pianist Claire Wachter has performed in some of the world's most prestigious venues, including Steinway Hall in New York, the National Recital Hall in Taiwan and the Qingdao Grand Hall in China. She has given solo performances in the U.S., Canada, Spain, and Austria. She has presented recitals, lectures, and master classes in Chile, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, China, and South Korea. Claire's videos "The Art of the Phrase," "The Essence of Chopin" and "The Genius of Domenico Scarlatti" have been viewed throughout the United States and in more than 100 countries.
Beautiful. These videos deserve much more attention and distribution. Very good. Thank you.
This is the best "semi"-go-over of Schumann's op.68, which has been neglected from the mainstream repertoire for a long time.
What a joy to revisit these pieces in a new setting, again charming, informative, inspiring! I am thinking how valuable it would would be for piano teachers and students to listen to these videos together, perhaps one each month...or for students to be assigned appropriate ones to view at home, then write a brief report about the composer and/or the music.
