ive just started doing a portrait piece of a mum and her baby boy. ive already started trying to apply some of these lessons, along with some of your other tutorials about drawing skin, and the difference is immediate and so good. im so excited to get my day job done each day just so that i can start working on this new project. thanks for all the knowledge!
Your videos are so chill & peaceful, clear & concise. It's funny that you stated if we had a tip for you, to share. Well, the only tip I have for you is to please continue to share your knowledge & skills with us. Your work is absolutely stunning! Thanks to you & your crew for all of the hard work that goes into everything you do so you can share it all with us.
I experimented with a really old-school technique for establishing an even tone on an illustration board, Graphite powder and Zippo lighter fluid, you spread the graphite powder on the board, and then take a rag and zippo lighter fluid and apply that wet rag to the graphite powder and you can get really interesting textures and tones, plus, it is very erasable.
I was never a person to use an eraser while drawing until I learned about you and your work a few months ago. I started a drawing of an eye some months ago. I am taking my time, want to do the best of it. I used an eraser on a line and... as I added some soft shadow afterwards, the markings of the eraser were all there! That is frustrating!
I love all your videos, looking at one of your drawings almost looked like an X-ray with ghost layers, very different from your other pieces that are highly detailed with bold texture, you’ve taken the elegance of a black and white high fashion photography with extremely well staged lighting and taken it into a whole new level, revealing rather than concealing, realism rather than mystery, bravely and boldly revealing your subject, giving us the ability to take out of the shadows those hidden parts that deserve as much love as the other parts that people over rate. These weekly videos really make my day.
THANK YOU!! I don't think i've ever been this grateful for an art tips video and your title for the video superbly reeled me in with curiosity. I will typically watch art videos while working on another project as background noise but your content was so great i couldn't focus on anything else cuz it was just that good. Amazing job!!
fAn tAss tiK, Jono! 🤩 soOo love your magnificent creations & soOo appreciate how openly you share your process & discoveries You are a Master Eraser! 🌟✏️🌟
Thanks! I've actually been doing this more and more. I even have the electric erasure now though I haven't used it yet because I've been sick. Anyway I really liked this so much. I find pencil drawings can be so amazing if you have the layers and I'm trying to work on that now, figuring out how to make them. I'll look for your other videos as well.
Great video..full of all those intricate detail that make you go...arrrhh yes. I use the erasure to change areas of composition, shapes, dynamics, adding history, extra life,if that makes sense, defying the obvious, changing direction.. Again great videos full of understanding for what you do..
I was just talking about this the other day. I think starting with a solid graphite sheet would be easier than starting with white. I find it easier to add highlights than lowlights. I think it's because there really isn't a whole lot of true white, maybe. 🤔 Anyway, thanks for sharing!
Bonjour , plendide votre travail, respect j’aime l’art depuis une trentaine d’années, la technique de votre fond , du pastel où Pierre noir ou fusain, merci à bientôt 🙏🙏🙏
Hi Jono. First of all I would like to say that I recently discovered your channel and I absolutely love your work. I've been doing portrait sketching for a year now as a hobby(during the Covid period) and I'm recently working on a piece right now. I needed some guidance on how to draw skin textures which is how I ended up discovering your channel here. As a beginner I'm trying to capture hyper-realism to my best ability and I've been using the basic grid technique to create the subject's outline and then start adding details to it (i.e. skin textures, hair details, etc). My question to you is how far is this grid technique effective in capturing hyper-realism? If No ,then what other techniques would you suggest to a beginner like me to get better at it?
I am glad I saw this as I have been adding value and subtracting but once i do get the shape I need with the texture I lose depth and dimension and i need to bring that back into the picture. I get stuck in a loop of bringing in value that gives depth and dinension and subtracting value for the sake of texture and going back and forth until I destroy the paper. I can't afford anything else right now. I was hoping you would critique my work and help me with it before I destroy it.
Hi Jono, thanks for the great tips, love your work, could you tell me which is the best kneadable eraser to use and how long does the eraser last before it becomes too saturated with pigment?
I admire you a lot. You are the best artist artist I have ever seen . I love your art works. Can you give me some tips to be successful as an graphite or potrait artist. Myself pratyaksh bhattar.
Bostik brand Bu Tack the best eraser youll ever own Other brands have oily residue but Bostik Blu Tack will not mark your paper. A regular kneeded eraser will only hold go much residue but blu tack will hold all residue will not break flake apart.
A lot of people roll their kneadable erasers into a cylinder that they can lightly roll over their drawing to quickly lighten large areas of their drawings. Don't know how well this works on large scale drawings though.
An ERASER is like the underrated soldier in the war of charcoal sticks
Just started drawing again after many many years. You're videos have been very helpful to me as I dive back into this passion! Thank you!
I have to thank you again and again

Thank you, Jono. The eraser is just as important as the drawing tool. In both my traditional and digital art, I couldn't live without the eraser.
I have been working with similar techniques myself. Feels validating to see you working the same way.
Agreed 👍 try one called tuff stick

Personally I've found that stumps are totally useless. You don't need them honestly. Your finger is way better a tool to blend shade.
