I served in Soest during the 1980's with the British Army. Fabulous place, fantastic country and a people who I will always remember fondly as friends.

i was stationed in Munster in 1982/84 and traveled all over germany with my company comander. i used to see the germany army all the time and i was always impressed with them. i was also very impressed with there tanks and APCs back then as well, far better than ours. i used to hang out at the ice rink in munster and had loads of german friends but i see it has been knocked down now.
The British army is not supported by its people. Otherwise they would not have voted Tory to see it slashed and cut, soldiers demoralised by pathetic pay and army housing sold off so that rich people can have tax cuts. The army is a liability to its men, there's a high chance of commitment to situations where we will not be strong enough to extricate them when they get overrun from being under strength and having too many inexperienced soldiers due to high turnover.

Die Besatzung der Briten und Kanadier in Deutschland hat auch kulturell Einfluss auf die Gebiete wo sie stationiert waren. In Deutschland gibt es über 100 Dudelsackbands und die meisten davon sind Deutsche und keine Schotten. Ich selbst gehöre auch dazu und ohne die Unterstützung der schottischen Dudelsackspieler wäre es nicht möglich. Es herrscht auch nach der Besatzung ein reger kultureller Austausch.

Famous and historical regiments hundreds of years old, disbanded or merged with other regiments.Englishmen, Scotsmen, Irishmen, Welshmen, manxmen, channel islanders, gibraltarians, Nepalese, and many others from the commonwealth of nations. Even a sprinkling of germans also nowadays, a real multi ethnic and multi national fighting force.
The parade would have been a token force and, of course, the withdrawal was just about money. Ironic considering how much it will be costing to deploy from the UK to Estonia and now Poland. The army at 72000 trained men is smaller than it was at the time of Waterloo, a scandal!
I think that many in the UK are sad at the withdrawal from Germany. Chance to learn new customs, history and food and drink. Though not the Liebfraulmilch (spelling).

Dennoch gibt es offiziell keine Feindseligkeiten mehr durch die Siegermächte (2+4 Vertrag) Das Besatzungsrecht ist eine andere Baustelle... Es gibt ja immer noch die Artikel in der UN Satzung (55, 73 und 107) die werden nicht geändert... Das ist Sache der Politik und die Briten ziehen ja nach und nach ihre Truppen ab... also was soll der ganze Terz dann? Und den Franzosen und den Russen hat man den Abzug ja auch finanziert mit mehreren Milliarden DM... also freiwillig sind die auch nicht abgezogen... Deutschland steht natürlich noch unter der Kontrolle der Amis und Briten aber bei weitem nicht mehr so wie es vor der Einheit war... oder etwa doch?
In Deutschland sollten Deutsche in deutschen Uniformen marschieren, die deutsche Lieder spielen und statt einer ausländischen lieber die deutsche Flagge hochhalten...
