"I can't do this. I'm a mathematician, not a calculator." THANK YOU. Being a pure math major, I am expected to do the calculations all the time when it comes to splitting checks, etc. Realistically, I stop doing purely calculations by the end of calculus III. Not that I don't enjoy or can't do calculations, but math is definitely beyond that. For the next 2 years after calc, I study theory and proofs. There's so much more beauty behind theory and analysis...(nerding out). Anyhoo, Eugenia is the best! Passion for math and baking like this are what we need hehe. Also, I am so glad Stephen is now hosting the Late Show. He's so funny & he has one of the most diverse group of guests! :) Keep up the good work!
Roving Punster Nah just a joke, i actually enjoy maths as i love problem solving, i picked advanced mathematics as one of my electables for my year 12 HSC.
This is the kind of teacher the mean kids at my school would relentlessly make fun of and back in my days, almost all those kids were mean. She wouldn't have survived there. Thankfully she's teaching somewhere her students are older and more appreciative.
+Roving Punster I don't think it's worse really, I like to think of it as the generation in which kids who do really bad things get the most attention, from media to high authority figures, but the other kids that don't are just either ignored or only have a small square in the local newspaper that says they did something really good, unfortunately good actions by people doesn't sell in media like grand tragedy.
if matt damon can beat up half of bosten and still be good at math. I dont see why this woman can't be a little nuts and still be a math genius. Inteligence at this level is basically a gift from god. Having said that this doesn't mean she didn't have to work extremly hard to reach her full potential.
I had a few teachers like this and they always really knew how to get to me and get me to push myself and learn more and want to participate and everyone was always eager to learn
I LOVE HER. I wish she taught me math throughout my education-- maybe I would have enjoyed it more. My teachers told me I was good at math, but I never felt any joy for it. I think this fab lady could have made me seen the joy in math.
puff pastry is exactly why everyone loves the french. Although it's usually easier to just soften the butter at room temperature. this looks more fun though.
This was really cool, I hope he keeps this kind of stuff up. Fallon did a bunch of kid sciencey stuff when he first started, but we've all seen that fall off once less attention was paid to his show. I hope Colbert keeps it up.
Stephen, it's 162, not 172. But Eugenia is correct; math isn't about multiplying big numbers together. It's about finding patterns. For example, how did I notice that 172 is not the correct answer? There's a pattern in multiples of 3: the sum of the digits of any multiple of 3 is also divisible by 3, and this is not true for 172. Why is this pattern true? That is a great motivation to learn beautiful subjects like modular arithmetic. I wish math classes focused more on this than mindless calculation.
I am a retired art teacher who used to do 'math art' with my students particularly during the years that I taught art in Saudi Arabia. I would be very interested to hear and see more about what you call and do as math art.
+JimmyKingster Why is that hard?! Double digit into single digit is what we are used to since/taught at school level, all one needs to know is 1 through 10 tables... (so actually, just 2 through 9 tables)
I hated math in high school, but I decided to be a math major in college when I took a (pure) math class with an amazing professor. In my last year of college Dr. Cheng came to my college and taught that same first class that I took. I wish I could've been there…
Why do you need a thousand Lairs? Once you have one, Hatcheries will do you. You're just wasting minerals and vespene, Dr. Chang. On the other hand, layering math is basically like taking that number, 2, and sticking it inside of a mech inside of a mech inside of a mech inside of a mech inside of a mech (this is a fairly complicated process). So in strictest mathematical terms, her equation of 2x3x3x3x3x3x3x3= Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.
Eugenie Allen's middling short story/brand name "Cake Math," which she made her family read aloud in DC/FD16, must've been a tribute to this brilliant mind's "π MATH", ya think? I'll ask "Cynthia d'Aprix Sweeney"!?
math people are so cute when they express their love for their profession. im like "yeah, yeah... math stuff.... yeah!" on the inside im like "what PLANET AM i on?"
Hmm... if you take a thousand layer cake and divide it into three, you only add two more layers, not multiply it by three, no??? Then if you add two layers of strawberry cream, that's two more layers - a total of four layers added once split and served. Methinks the math is slightly off a smidge.
love a) how Eugenia sets Stephen back at first, b) how he soon adapts, c) how quickly they then play and improvise off each other - quick and fun lol
She would be a great regular guest on the show. There was some good chemistry there. Just go ahead and cover all the subjects.
I am a mathematician not a calculator.... Wish i could have told that to my teacher
+thelousyllama If you were a mathematician wouldn't you be out of school and not have a teacher?
+Ryan R being a mathematician is in the heart not in the paycheck
That's a fair statement
+thelousyllama The day @StephenAtHome was called a Nerd by a "bona fide", top-class, professional nerd. Priceless! :-D
I wish I could have told that to my students!
She actually makes maths fun!
What a character. She should be on the show more often.
She is now one of my favorite people ever! :D
same
+BLACK_WOLF Will you remember her in 7 months?
+Dudeomfgstfux Indeed I will.
She was one of my lecturers at Sheffield. She was this energetic and amazing and one of the most inspiring lecturers I had.

Do you by any chance have her book? Should I buy it? I'm currently a science student in high school and I absolutely love pure math!
My suspicions were correct, living in Sheffield does slowly turn you insane.
i know. she acted crazy and scary
Not insane. Eccentric.
Oh man, I love this woman. And that Invention 13 remix at the end, very nice touch. Bach and mathematics go very well together.
What a delightfully strange lady. :D
I wish I had her as a math teacher when I was in high school.
In my math class at school, i learnt that 5318008 on a calculator upside down spelt BOOBIES
+bloggs24 Math Rules!!
Roving Punster
Nah just a joke, i actually enjoy maths as i love problem solving, i picked advanced mathematics as one of my electables for my year 12 HSC.
+Roving Punster You have no humor in your DNA, do you?
+bloggs24 You can spell out BOOBIES if you have a graphing calculator.
+bloggs24
3704558 flip it upside down and cover the bottom of 8.
That woman is insane. I'm in love.
Ca
Is it me, or are the guests of this show already more diverse than all other shows?
She sounds like a joy to hang out with, arms flailing everything.
This is the kind of teacher the mean kids at my school would relentlessly make fun of and back in my days, almost all those kids were mean. She wouldn't have survived there. Thankfully she's teaching somewhere her students are older and more appreciative.
+Roving Punster I am not familiar with this lack of discipline. I mean, teachers can't hit kids anymore, but I doubt that would stop some people.
+Roving Punster kids can always be like this, there is not one period in history that kids where "perfect".
+stuntmen75 I too, watched the latest VSauce video on Juvenoia.
+WWIflyingace62 And was it not an informative and great segment.
You must bring her back!😁
A great show, there is science and calculation in cooking, very well explained simply.

Did she basically just make a butter burrito?
+SelfAwarePedant buttrito
+Rob o no that's something else
Butterito
+SelfAwarePedant You don't watch Bake-off and I claim my 10 pounds.
you obviously don't know what a burrito is.
I love when I see someone so excited about their work.
I want to see more of her, because... reasons.
+The1AndOnlyGoldenboy So many reasons.
+The1AndOnlyGoldenboy I can only think of 2!?
president comacho 3!?
president comacho I was talking about the 3 insertion points?
+Myo swe oh gawd
What a peppy lady. She must be an awesome teacher in class.
I had a few teachers like this and they always really knew how to get to me and get me to push myself and learn more and want to participate and everyone was always eager to learn

She's the Tom Cruise of math
Her passion and energy is commendable.
Her enthusiasm is contagious. And delightful.
she is nuts! I love her!
Love this. She's so wonderfully kooky and ridiculously brilliant. Please have her back!
Her enthusiasm is contagious!
Just discovered her 2 minutes ago, love her already
Awww so sweet. Wish all my daughter’s math teachers were like her.
Bring her on again!
She's so excited! I love it!!
puff pastry is exactly why everyone loves the french. Although it's usually easier to just soften the butter at room temperature. this looks more fun though.
I wish my maths lecturer was this interesting.
This was really cool, I hope he keeps this kind of stuff up. Fallon did a bunch of kid sciencey stuff when he first started, but we've all seen that fall off once less attention was paid to his show. I hope Colbert keeps it up.
3:30 54 times 3 = 162 NOT 172
i love her energy,, very pretty as well
Ah Eugenia Cheng
Her energy is awesome
I had her as a teacher last year
"i'm a mathmetician not a calculator" - ouch stephen
I met her at lecture! I had her book signed. An amazing woman.
Steven learns an important first lesson about math; mathematicians are crazy (which I mean in the best way possible).
she needs a show! totally awesome!
Damn, Eugenia has come a long way since her Catsters videos.
I would watch her cooking show if it's there... Really funny
Well I like her now. I wish I had a teacher like that.
Dr. Eugenia Cheng is awesome!
This was really kind of adorable

*slow clap*

when stephen gets 18 and she congratulates him he genuinely looks like a happy student, it's adorable
I did like to watch Eugenia at A Trip to Infinity, a netflix documetary, she has a beautiful voice!
she's brilliant!
Shes a great teacher
I love this! I wish she was my math teacher!
54 x 3 = 172... Stephen The Calculator.
+JimmyKingster Why is that hard?! Double digit into single digit is what we are used to since/taught at school level, all one needs to know is 1 through 10 tables... (so actually, just 2 through 9 tables)
isnt it 162?
she needs her own show
I hated math in high school, but I decided to be a math major in college when I took a (pure) math class with an amazing professor. In my last year of college Dr. Cheng came to my college and taught that same first class that I took. I wish I could've been there…
"I'm a mathematician, not a calculator". Perfect.
She has a channel called the Catsters where she teaches Category Theory.
Awesome guest!
Former actuarial science major: math professors at this level get off to numbers.
They worked well together.
Pretty sure this isn't on the secret menu at Chipotle.
I've got to read her book
She has a funny charm to her personality, very high energy but casual
Why do you need a thousand Lairs? Once you have one, Hatcheries will do you. You're just wasting minerals and vespene, Dr. Chang.

This was so awkward, but I love it.
She is just awesome!!!!
colbert has really tried hard to play up the sex appeal ever since he took over the late show....and i think it's working ..
She'd be everyone's best mathematics teacher.
I wish she was my math teacher when I was in school.
There are not 4372 layers. When she folded 2 layers without putting butter in between, they stuck together and become one layer.
That is not the "Mille-feuilles" I know of and grown up loving !
Nice job, Stephen. Paula Deen just went into cardiac arrest watching this. Too much butter, too much Math and too much shouting Asian lady.
Well that was adorable.
A brilliant, absolutely gorgeous woman who can bake? I'll take one.
Holy shit, I remember this lady...she performed in Chicago a few years back. Damn, so she is a doctor too? That's crazy...
+Susanne lol, yes...I'm aware, thank you Susanne.
that was brilliant!
as a baker, she is not making a really good puffy pastry!the butter is seeping!
Eugenie Allen's middling short story/brand name "Cake Math," which she made her family read aloud in DC/FD16, must've been a tribute to this brilliant mind's "π MATH", ya think?
I'll ask "Cynthia d'Aprix Sweeney"!?
make this a weekly thing!
did anyone else notice that Stephen got 54x3 wrong? 162, not 172 😄
hey Eugenia! shes my math teacher!
Wonderful.
math people are so cute when they express their love for their profession. im like "yeah, yeah... math stuff.... yeah!" on the inside im like "what PLANET AM i on?"
Earth
Adorbs, love it.

This was awesome
... Stephen would be a handsome teacher, I would not miss any lesson.
Y'all need to make her a regular guest. Just sayin'
I remember cooking with students and when we had to increase a recipe, I overheard students saying, "Now I get why I need math!"
She gets it.
she's like a female Russel Brand.
The first minute at least is just like his personality lol
54 * 3 = 162 not 172
