Magnets + Modifications: DrunkDeer A75

  • The DrunkDeer A75 is a new - "Magnetic" - keyboard that is an interesting contemporary take on using Hall Effect switches for analogue keystroke mapping, which allows users to tune the key actuation sensitivity, as well as permit triggering 2 actions with a single key. In this video, I take a closer look at this keyboard and present a few modifications I've made to further dampen its acoustics.

    Thank you. I just got this keyboard, and it sounds a lot different than the pre production unit you have in this video. The rapid trigger helps in Overwatch. I might have to give this mod a go.

      I hope the mod works well for you too! I found it cut the echo and hollowness quite a bit - but the magnetic switches are pretty handy for tuning responsiveness ✌️

    Hi great vid! If you don't mind. May I ask how were you able to take the knob off? I went to the drunkdeer website says that the knob should be remove first.

    • @JakeReevesVideo
      @JakeReevesVideo  9 місяців тому

      You have to loosen the set-screw on the side of the knob I believe. It will require a small Allen key to loosen.

    Is there any available aluminum case to replace the housing of this keyboard?

    Neat review! I picked this keyboard up recently and love it! I was looking into some keycap options and know people tend to say that cherry profile caps haver interference with north-facing LED switches which this board does feature. Should I avoid that profile for this reason? Also, it appears that the "Enable secondary sensitivity" option in the software has been removed, unless it is relocated somewhere and I didn't see it.

    • @JakeReevesVideo
      @JakeReevesVideo  8 місяців тому

      If you’re worried about Cherry interference with north facing LEDs, the most similar profile would be OEM - Cherry-like sculpting but taller.

    Just ordered one of these and I will definitely try this mod. I like the fact that I can use the materials in the box, really smart thinking. I am new to the keyboard world and you make this video simple and easy to understand.
    Edit: Why did you put take around the outside of the keyboard case?

    • @JakeReevesVideo
      @JakeReevesVideo  7 місяців тому +1

      Thanks, I hope you enjoy it. The tape on the outside of the keyboard case acts as a force break - it prevents vibrations from transferring easily between the bottom and top of the case, in effect helping to dampen out some resonance ✌️

    How did you open the board? Does it have screws? Or you just need a pry tool?

    • @JakeReevesVideo
      @JakeReevesVideo  9 місяців тому +1

      I used a guitar pick - you need to wedge something into the crack in the backside of the case and carefully pry it open just enough that the inner clips unlatch on the case. Be careful, but it is doable 👍

    do you know if this is compatible with gateron and other HE switches or does it only work with drunkdeer's own switches?

    • @JakeReevesVideo

      I'm not certain, but I suspect it would eb compatible with the others - Can't say I have yet tried the Gateron HE switches though

    hello! awesome video plan on doing this when my keyboard comes in, i dont know much abt customizing keyboards, but since it has i think "magnetic" switches do i have to get other magnetic switches? i love silent keyboards and am wondering which switches i will need? thanks a ton!

    • @JakeReevesVideo
      @JakeReevesVideo  5 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for the comment - yes, you will need magnetic switches if you’re going to swap out these ones. Look for something that is branded as either magnetic or Hall Effect 👍 This keyboard doesn’t have the hot swap socket attachments to receive standard mechanical keyboard pins, so magnetic switches are necessary ✌️

    Is it possible to remove the knob? I pull really hard but its not moving...
    Also would be great to see how to lube the stabilizers, cause they're really bad from the box.

    • @JakeReevesVideo
      @JakeReevesVideo  5 місяців тому

      The knob would have to be unsoldered from the PCB, it isn’t hot swappable.

    How did you open up this keyboard?

    • @JakeReevesVideo
      @JakeReevesVideo  5 місяців тому

      You have to stick something slim through the gap around the periphery of the underside. There are small internal shelves that keep it in place - be careful not to crack the plastic 👍

      Not QMK/VIA compatible, but it does have its own proprietary remapping software that can handle that 👍

    How do you mod it tho?

    • @JakeReevesVideo
      @JakeReevesVideo  Рік тому +1

      I predominately modified it by way of foaming the interior to reduce the sharp case-ping and applying a Tempest tape mod to the backside of the PCB.

    • @hansjeremyreyes784
      @hansjeremyreyes784 Рік тому +2

      Oh sorry, I’m talking about like removing the screws and stuff

    • @JakeReevesVideo
      @JakeReevesVideo  Рік тому +2

      Not many screws to remove - to get into the case, you have to wedge something thin between the top and bottom case in the small crack around the outside on the underside of the case. It is a press-fit snap lock system rather than a screw enclosure. I hope this helps 👍
