- To some, being completely disconnected from the world seems intimidating. But to the horseback riders of Banff Trail Riders, this is their refuge, their value system, and simply put, their way of being.
Every year, Banff Trail Riders hosts a group of strong, independent cowgirls -- many of whom are alumni queens and princesses of the Calgary Stampede -- on a trip deep into Banff National Park’s backcountry, into areas far beyond where even the hardiest of hikers go and where cellphone networks are a distant memory. Where only a horse could take you. On these trips, the women unplug, commiserate with nature, and reconnect -- to the strength, independence and community values of the women of the west that came before them, and the values they now carry forth. And while Alberta’s rugged Rocky Mountain landscapes aren’t for the faint of heart when explored on your own, the women of Banff Trail Riders will have you feeling like you were born to do this your whole life.

I dont hear any of them mention how expensive and costly it is to be a cowgirl. I dont know how to be a cowgirl but i know horses and I ride english but i know the cost if having just one horse you got feed, vet bills, tack, boarding fees not yo mention farrier fees if you have your own land then chamces are you have good grazing so the feed bill will be lower and no boarding fees but then you have land taxes and its a very very exclusive world where only the wealthy and connected are accepted and everyones nose is up in the air and everyone tries to keep up with each other which is a pity because horses are amazing animals and riding is the best. These women are not being honest with us.
That's the difference, you ride english, I seriously doubt you turn your horse out to graze, so therefore, you gotta pay for feed year round. They don't. Many dont board their horse unless they necessarily have to or have no other choice due to the cost. Theres ranchers that have learned to shoe and trim their own horses so they don't have to pay the farrier. I worked for several that did so. The only thing they paid for was vet cost. Learn to do things, and you save money, and others may even turn to you for help.
@@Briebabcock8052 you are right in most cases but my horse an ex race horse was constantly pasturing as i wanted her to live as free as possible. I no longer have her she is no longer with us and yes they dont turn their horses out much at all. I guess i was different. I never gave her water as she drank from the stream running through the property, i never cut grass as she had all the grazing a horse could want and i would exercise her in the soccer field adjacent. When it was raining, she had plenty of shelter to go to on her own and when the sun was blazing, she had tons of big trees to shade under. The only time she would be in her stall was when id be saddling her, grooming her or feeding her. I tried to have her live as close to nature as possible i was living in the caribbean at the time and no hurricanes as Trinidad is not in the belt its too far south the only thing i didnt know how to do was shoeing. Like i said i do not like the snobbery that goes with the equestrian world its horrible and if your last name is not from one of the more prominent families they want nothing to do with you no matter if you are a billionaire or you are amazing with horses. You gotta be of the right class and breeding. I have no time for that. Maybe its different in the western riding world.
@chowmarina008 That's pretty fair. My apologies for assuming. I'm sorry for your loss. I suppose things are different here in the US, I'd imagine Canada too it's very common to turn one's horses out to feed and do much of the horse care work yourself (save for dental care and the major vet things as its ridiculous in cost). There's still money involved, but not really names. It's more like who you know more than anything. Though, there's plenty of entitlement no matter your class, especially city slickers. There's a bunch of factors that play into why ranching can/is expensive, I think it's more along the lines of people bitting of more than they can chew more often than not. My paternal family were hog (pig) ranchers since 1906, plus whatever else up the family tree, my maternal side were farmers (corn and cotton), and both did really well. As they say, gotta spend money to make money.
@@Briebabcock8052 yes i agree with you. I actually live in Alberta, Can. Now and while this is horse country my life now is way different and i gotta work to keep food on the table. I do live horses and one day i will own one again but ill do things way different this time and you dont need to apologise for anything. My only concern with owning a horse here is the winters because with dogs you just bring em in the house during the cold days and thats it. I dont know, ill just have to learn how its done when im in that world again, im sure itll be ok.
@chowmarina008 Maybe ask around or look up some ranchers around Alberta and go see their setups to get some ideas, especially with feeding. The most obvious is a stable. I'd have the walls and ceiling insulated. Just out of curiosity, have you looked into Equine Mules? Usually, they're a lot cheaper, require less maintenance, are very smart, not really skittishlike horses can be, and are pretty good at defending themselves against wild animals from my understanding.
