      WAN throughput with everything going, VPN, IDS/IPS, Chromecast, Kids (oh...those @%$#! kids...), a -100mbps (yeah, MINUS).

    As a UniFi noob who doesn't care about the history of the USG, this would be a perfect product if it just had a controller built in. I love the idea of a basic firewall that runs UniFi OS where you need to provide your own switches and APs. Like a basic UDM-Pro for much cheaper. The fact you need to add a controller kills it for me. UDR is great, but sometimes the AP doesn't get used as best as I would like due to non-perfect placement.

      Personally I like that this doesn't have a controller built-in. There's also another product coming with similar form factor called the UniFi Express which I believe has a controller built in, has a small screen as well as a Wi-Fi access point.

      What you are looking for is the Unifi Dream Router. It has a built in controller and can also run the Protect OS. This device is to replace the USG for customers who already have enterprise controllers controlling many sites. I was afraid they would not come up with a solution to replace the USG and I am happy they did. If only they were actually available in the store, and not sold out instantly...

    Installed it today. Works like a charm. Replaced my USG3. Migrating from the USG to the Lite was easy. Performance with IDS/IPS enabled is perfect. I have a 1Gbit up/down fiber at home and with my PC using m2 SSD the speedtest is around 940Mbit up/down with IDS/IPS enabled. Sounds like a good deal for 140 euro's. I only need 1 WAN port and 1Gbit connection is fine. No need for more right now.

    It's perfect for a small simplified apartment setup and it's timely for me.
    I'm moving countries in December and downsizing. So I've just sold all my Unifi rackmount gear and older access points I.e. USG 4, 4 year old cloud key gen2+ with rackmount, 24 port PoE switch and UAP-HDs.
    I can mount the UXG-lite on a metal pin board in the utility cabinet with a fanless poe switch and run the unifi controller locally on a poe splitter powered Raspberrypi 5. Add in a couple of U6-mesh access points and that's my home network sorted for the next 5 years.
    Light, clean, extensible, no fan noise and modular if I do decide to upgrade any components.

    You ask who will buy this. Well, let me go back to almost the time of your first USG video, to me at the time. I needed a good AP, so I got an AP-AC-Pro. Then I wanted a PoE switch. And once I had that, I got the USG. It wasn't until later that I switched from running the controller on my PC to a cloud key. And since then the whole thing has been upgraded and upgraded until it's now a good and proper overkill solution :) Following some of the UniFi facebook groups, this is a common way to get into the UniFi system. Many people don't buy a whole new network setup in one go, it's one step at a time.
    I definitely see some users do the same path. This finally gives that option - it was getting hard to tell anyone to pay money for the ancient USG.
    However, I do think that you have a very good point about R2D2. It is a very good solution for home users, and even some small businesses.

    I think that this mid-level Unifi equipment is great for those that sit between needing a single modem/router and those needing a full rack mount setup (like me). I have a USG-3P, UCKG2, several 8 port switches and 2 access points giving wired and wifi in every room of our house. My frustration with this Unifi (and other consumer grade equipment) is that there is no manufacturer provided option to mount or tidy up this equipment. I note the setup in the video has three basic 'boxes', plus an access point. All of them are different shapes and sizes. I ended up 3D printing a solution for my setup, but I think most people looking at these solutions would be interested in the manufacturer providing a modular system to mount the hardware and wiring.

I'm tempted to get the USG Lite so it once again matches all the other Unifi gear and has the 'One pane of glass' management but I am happy with the EdgeRouter. If I got the USG Lite I'd keep the EdgeRouter as an emergency spare I s'pose ... but this 'upgrade' isn't a priority now.

Just disconnected the Tp-link router and connected the UXG-Lite and adopted it with the Unifi App on my phone.. The UXG-Lite assigned the correct ISPs for all the devices on my network but had a few that I had to power down and power back up and everything worked. Excellent product. Been waiting for this. Perfect for the residential customer that doesn’t need a high-end router/firewall. A mid-level version with dual-wan is also desired. Something between 129 and 499. Maybe for $250 you get a 3-port version, an upgraded processor and RAM, and is 2.5G capable. 3 ports with LAN1, WAN1, and either LAN2 or WAN2 is very useful.

      A 2.5 Gbps WAN + 4 port 2.5Gbps LAN with at least 1 PoE++ port (for a UniFi Flex switch perhaps) or an AP for $200-$225 CAD (so a little less than a UDR at $266 CAD direct from Ubiquiti, which accounts for the lack of a built in controller and AP, since I'd trade those features for NBASE-T, and perception would be that even with that, it should be less than the cost of the AP and controller). Even if it was the same price as a UDR, it would still be worth it as $300 CAD gets you a TP-Link wifi 7 router with 2.5Gbps WAN and 4x 5Gbps LAN right now.

      @@technerd9655with this at $179 CAN, that’s not going to happen.
      And with my experience, TP-Link and Unifi aren’t even remotely comparable. Had a TP-Link AC Wi-Fi router. Was supposed to be the fastest thing available at the time. It was, but only if there wasn’t any Wi-Fi congestion.
      I had 40 meg service at the time. It could max it out on wifi during daytime Monday to Friday, but any other time it was a disaster. As soon as kids in the neighbourhood got out of school and got online, it couldn’t handle the congestion. Performance plummeted to about 10 meg down. Friday evening through Sunday, I was lucky to get 3 meg down. It was so slow that I had trouble checking email.
      In the exact same circumstance, a Unifi AC access point dropped from 40 meg daytime to 38 meg at the worst on weekends.

    Looks nice and all and I prefer to have everything separated that way I can just upgrade a set bit of hardware when needed.
    Sadly that Gateway wouldn't be fast enough to handle my connection here and its throughput.
    I am looking for a good setup for a +3Gbit connection, with a 10Gbit LAN, sadly there isn't much information that says how much throughput the devices can handle which was why I went with MikroTik for the router and its been great, but I do like the UI for Unifi's hardware.
    So I was wondering what Router you would recommend for an up to 10Gbits connection that can handle more than that throughput with firewall filters / rules etc. The router doesn't need to have Wi-Fi due to I already have the AP separate.
    Also what Switch(s) would you recommend was hoping to get 10Gbit link to each room and then a smaller Switch to handle devices in that room.
    So a MAIN Switch that has the 10Gbit link from the Router and multiple smaller Switches that connect to the MAIN Switch, so the the smaller Switches will have a 10Gbit Link to the MAIN Switch.
    So any recommendations ?.

      It is the same process as replacing a USG with another USG. You must first delete the USG from the controller as you cannot adopt 2 gateways to a single site, then you can adopt the new UXG and it will provision itself with all of the existing site settings. Obviously, some may have to re-route some things if you were utilizing the secondary LAN on the USG or something that is not available on the UXG model that was on the USG. You could prepare for that before removing the old USG though. Otherwise, very straight forward replacement.

The actual device configuration wouldn't amount to much besides having 1 less interface than the previous model which would have to be accounted for if you were utilizing that previously. All of your network configuration should stay intact, no matter the gateway that you install. I am sure there will be more coverage on this device in the future, but it has only been released in the United States for a week. This is just a simple overview of general features and a comparison to the previous generation's model.

    I'd poss consider it at a family member remote adopted to my Unifi CK Gen2+. Otherwise I'll stay on my current 3rd party firewal (pf+). I wonder what it's VPN performance is like as from a multi site business you could install at the branch offices and have it VPN back to the main site etc. That potentially hosts further Unifi kit.

    Will definitely replace my old USG gateway with this new one. I already have the the Cloudkey G2 Plus, so it’s a no brainer to finally use the 400 mbps internet connection with full IPS/IDS without throttling down to around 200 mbps. I was considering the full size Dream Machine SE but this will give me just about the same performance for a fraction of the cost. Now just have to wait for it to be available in Canada 😢

      Kudos for holding out if you been using the kit for a long time. I jumped from USG to USG PRO to UXG PRO as my internet connection was getting faster and the features too improved.
      Now for an improved CK as the swollen battery and silly small 2.5 drive are really annoying. Not that I need the drive now as I’ve added the UNVR

    Thanks for the video. The biggest advantage is if your network room is in an area that blocks/attenuated the WiFi signal. In the Netherlands, most internet connections come into a small closet that is filled with gas meter, electrical breaker boxes and other electromechanical stuff. I think putting the dream machine in closet dampens the WiFi signal.

      @briccimn 7 місяців тому

      I learned that you do such a "strange" thing in the Netherlands from a guy in Reddit...
      I still wonder how is this thought to be safe to put every kind of electronics into *GAS* closet (natural methane gas in the largest majority of Europe, for those electricity-only people in some places)...
      Somebody could say that the gas conduits must be safely sealed, but if the closet is OUT of the house, there is that logical gap in storing it outside despite its "safety"... 🙂
      Thus, when in Rome do as the Romans do. 🙂

    Hi Chris, I LOVE your videos! I learn o much from you! I want one opinion from you because I want to change my router(AmplifiHD). I have one Flex, two U6 Lite and about 50 clients(couple gaming computers too). I wanted to buy an UDMSE but the price is still high and I frankly I don't need anything but Network application (with Firewall setup included). I don't have a Cloud Key(the version that you have doesn't exist anymore), I run it on old laptop. I like it at UDMSE that have that cloud key inside. I have 1 Gbps speed from IPS, don't know when will have 2,5 Gbps. Thats another point plus to UDMSE. Though, UDMSE is big, noisy, high price. In this light, what ubiquiti gateway router you recommend to have for the next 6-7 years from now one? Big Thanks for your existence! 🤗

    Personally, I do still wish they'd embedded a few more ports on this device. I'm still running an Edgerouter X as my router, and while I do have a switch providing more wired ports - it's a very basic switch without VLAN capability, as I only need a few ports capable of VLAN tagging. Even adding the $30 Flex Mini switch bumps this to within spitting distance of the UDR.

    If this video had been described as an "unboxing", I could have safely ignored it, and waited for your proper review. As it is, I'm now annoyed that I wasted my time on a content light unboxing video, which makes me less likely to watch future videos immediately.

    Looking at this setup, I would not deploy it to anyone that has a lot of activity going on. However, I would use it as a teaching aide for anyone who wants to learn the Unifi ecosystem. It is a cheaper way to learn and could be a stepping stone for someone who wants to get into it. But as for real world use, I would be hard pressed to use this since it is limited on what it can do. But on one hand if it takes a shit, you can replace it a lot easier than the UDM Pro

    I feel like when Ubiquiti dumped the USG, it left a vacuum in their product line for their lower tier firewalls. Don't get me wrong because I LOVE my Unifi Dream Machine Pro, but for most small setups, those things are overkill! I think this Intel-NUC-sized firewall was long overdue. Yeah, getting that with separate devices costs similar to the regular dream machine, but as a former USG owner myself (my old USG died), I do honestly believe some people will appreciate the flexibility.

    • @Famousfifty8
      @Famousfifty8 7 місяців тому

      Absolutely agree. They did come out with the dream router series, but they had built-in OS and controllers, which does those with large VM controllers managing a large quantity of sites no good. We would not be able to do any direct replacements and could not adopt these new devices. So it was certainly sending us into research mode looking for another non-Unifi solution for a while until these were released. Unfortunately Unifi supply chain is and always has been terrible so who knows when these will actually be in stock for any period of time.

    The Ubiquiti USG has a compact footprint and is wall-mountable. The device has (1) GbE WAN and (2) GbE LAN ports. The device is powered by a dual-core 500MHz processor (Marvell Octeon, MIPS architecture) paired with 512MB DDR2 RAM. Despite being powered with an older processor, Ubiquiti claims the USG is capable of routing up to 1,000,000 pps (Packets Per Second) for 64 Byte sized packets and 3Gbps for 512 Bytes or larger transfers.The device has a maximum power consumption of 7W and comes with a 12V DC, 1A power adapter. The device is supported in a voltage range of 9-24V DC.

    You asked;
    I would NOT use or recommend it for home or very small business.
    It is;
    - Minimally powered (turn ON the IDS/IPS to find out)
    - Lacks additional segregating LAN port hardware, so combining today's heavy diet of VLan, wired data, Wireless feeds, Video multicasting and whatever in a growing home won't be kind at all.
    - No access to 2.5G ports, honestly were the 2.5g chipset so costly?
    - Also not so kind of Ubiquiti to not keep installers informed on future products and upgrades, I don't think I've ever received any email from them.
    Since the Unifi line first came out, it had been increasingly harder to setup until they finally centralized on just one login credential and upgraded the interface multiple times.
    It's also increasingly harder to buy products, taking 10 months for Unifi AP AC-Pro to arrive at my doorstep and replacements to existing hardware non-existent.
    I have need of replacing a couple Unifi Gateway 3Ps in doctor offices but don't think this fits the bill.
    I'll either install an Edge Router X or piece out the gateway to a different brand.
