Welcome to THAT club. After years of wrangling, I’ve managed to dump the burden if victimhood and have a very blessed life. Part of the process was to figure out that though I learned to live with F*ck heads as a child I didn’t have to continue that into my adulthood. Maybe that was the lesson the whole time.
When people around me tries to describe Americans based their narrow minded view when reading about world politics I often bring up these kind of warm, wholesome and free-minded people that I usually bump into when traveling around in these wonderful parts of the states such as Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah. I meet them outside gas stations, at motels, in roadhouse restaurants etc. etc. The American people is sure as hell not the government. This is along with the nature and scenery one of the reasons why I love the US and take the early road-trips around in the area, not for the shopping malls, the amusement parks or any of the plastic surreal parts of the country which usually is what people from Europe refer to when describing their trips to the US! When people say that they love the Italians or the French mentality they’ve never been around to meet the authentic Americans /Love from Sweden 🇸🇪
Sweden 🇸🇪 has my heart! I’ve only traveled out of the states to two locals , Peru and Sweden x2. There is something about Sweden that feels like home to me. I think I belong there😂. I felt like the people were fairly “ closed off” but yet helpful and friendly when needed?. I feel like when you actually do befriend someone there and gain their trust, you have a friend for life. I made a hand full of lifelong friends while visiting the Bushcraft Festavelan even if we only keep in touch via social. I attended the festival twice (should have been an annual visit) but then the world fell apart and I don’t think I’ll ever get to go back. That breaks my heart. I visited Stockholm and Uppsala and some surrounding countryside. I loved the slower pace of life and the way people seemed fully engaged in what ever they were doing , especially when conversing with someone. It’s been a few years but I don’t remember seeing everyone’s heads buried in thier cell phones.
This lovely village looks exactly like Siwa oasis here in Egypt 🇪🇬. Most of its residents has run away from the crowded cities and the disorders and the huge range of inconvenience. Thank you very much for this impressive video. Salute from Egypt 🇪🇬 with love and respect 😊
Everyone lives here. Anyone one person that you can think of of any race, gender, ethinicity, etc....they're here. Somewhere. Hell, I met someone from Greenland that lives in Oregon. No shit.
Thank you Natalia and Peter for always showing respect to the people and the environment in your videos. Also thank you for taking us down the road less traveled, showing us places we never knew existed!!
If there’s one thing I LOVE about Peter in all of his videos is how he shows respect and unbiased views to the people he meets and interviews , so much so that You can’t tell whether he agrees or disagrees or likes or dislikes something. That’s growth on a different level , and I have learned something from you. Keep up the great work!
America is truly a beautiful country. We have such varied landscapes from deserts to mountains. Thank you for bringing so many varieties of people to us as well. Love your channel. Great vid
What I really love about watching your documentaries is that I get to listen to interesting people with interesting lives and be presented with ideas that make me think outside the box. I love it!
Enjoyed this as I've lived remote offgrid. For practical reasons moved to small town. When you have sense of community, purpose, belonging you have everything. I struggle with that balance every day. Want to move... unsure where. These folks seem so thankful and content. I admire that.
Love, love, love this video. I have been going through the Mojave desert since I was a child, and it has always been very alluring to me. There is something magical about the Mojave.
The desert is beautiful and I love to drive through it, but I do not want to live in it like these people do. Its hot enough in Phoenix and there are way too many snakes and scorpions here...I can't imagine what they are like there. I love small town, rural living, but in greener places.
Love these old hippies, great artists. Never bored. I figured out the town, but will respect your and their wishes to keep it quiet. Informative video.
My grandfather ran the Morningstar mine in the Mojave preserve when I was a kid and took me through this Ghost town of people once. I was amazed how people could live in such ungodly forgiving wasteland. But then again alot the miners lived in sheet metal shacks so these people are definitely living better then original settlers
Hello Peter ,, A wonderful episode, This spot is similar to many spots here that we have it in Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦 We have many villages and desert deserts in which very few people live. It's charming, somehow helps to heal, but at the same time a little dangerous. Thank you for a great episode!
I love that place! I remember watching Rose paint the front of the dance hall years ago. She was so nice, as well as the only one around. The waterfall was beautiful, and the cemetery was so interesting. Thanks for sharing this!
I've been to the waterfall once, in 2014. The trail to it got wiped out by the August 2022 Flash Flood, so it's not accessible at the moment, but I assume the Park Service will repair the trail and open it up again at some point in the next few months. I've never visited the town, but it's on my bucket list. There are several little towns in Nevada along US-95 that are similar, like Goldfield, Mina and Luning. No services other than electric power. No gas station or grocery store closer than 50 miles away, yet a few dozen people hang on in these places. Must take a very special breed to live in such remote places.
Funny, I was born in Keeler and my parents soon moved Bishop, one of the town's people shopping places. We left California in the middle 50s and now I live in Arizona. I am certainly fascinated with the old mining towns. I love watch the Cerro Gordo video near that area also. It amazes me that people live in the hottest place in America. Another great video, Peter.
I spent 3 weeks traveling the country last August. My wife and I were trying to hit as many mountain biking destinations as possible. It made me realize I'm definitely about this life. We're not able to do it full time right now because of our jobs, but we're planning another 3 week trip, and I think we might buy the RV this time instead of renting.
@Hailey It’s really hypocritical to be so anti-mining, but want to preserve an old mining town. He is just one of a long list of edgy go-getters that wants to turn an old ghost town into his hipster bed and breakfast. It would be nice if one of these owners of Cerro Gordo, that supposedly care about the place and area so much, would clean up the MASSIVE pile of waste and toxic tailings that are littering his property…..and ACTIVELY leeching into the waterways. Nah…don’t worry about the environmental waste you just bought….go build an air B&B. That REALLY gives back to the environment. At least that Canadian Mining company he sabotaged would have actually HAD to lean up the 100 years of waste….we know hipster dude wont.
Omg we loveeeeee Brent’s channel!!!! We hope to go up someday and help on one of his volunteer days I want to see his shop with all the relics If Peter could venture up there now that would be awesome. I don’t think he’s far from where this town is
It's so interesting hearing people talk about this little town. My grandparents still own property here. My grandpa was a miner there and that's where my mom was raised. Oh the stories I've heard. Going up to their old house at the mine riddled with bullet holes. Their property is actually shown in this video. It's awesome. Hearing the conversation over the hippies and rednecks is the truth. My grandpa told storied about always keeping guns because that's how bad the fued was.
Just fascinating to see perspective about life from these folks. World has become so congested and life became so stressful that we often forget about freedom in our life we may cherish time to time. Those were the days when folks used to enjoy late evening coffee at front porch. Not anymore.
@@Dr.Zoidberg087 Never met anyone who was a true hippie and owned a gun in my 70 years. But to be fair I guess you could argue the definition of hippie forever 🤷🏻♂️

Travelling all over the US for work ( long-hauler ) , the coolest people I've learned the most from have always lived out in the middle of nowhere. If you make the journey to meet people like these folks and experience these types of places I've noticed over the years life will reward you with something you didn't know you needed but afterwards realize you were searching for all along and changing you in a way that will make you look back fondly and look forward seeking more. Great video Peter !
Amazing Peter. You know what would be really interesting as well. For you to bring someone from one of the other episodes you have done along for their reaction as well…maybe.
I was just there for a weekend trip, eating lunch at Bishop and other places. It's fascinating to me how people can organize their lives in the middle of nowhere. Death Valley has its unique vibe, so thank you for sharing. Great way to understand the conditions there.
I've enjoyed passing through this ecclectic old town many times on my adventure bike, and my favorite way in is the way you went. It's very kitchy and unusual. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Peter, I recently started to watch your video's. It makes me want to go to the secluded places in the mid-west, the drought, the dust. I want to say that I also really like the respectfull approach you have to the local communities. Thank you for sharing your experiences.
@@jltaco85 All of the land in that city is privately owned by individuals. Most of the surrounding land is privately owned by various private mining operations (still active). It’s really sad actually to see my home state in the shape it is in now. I won’t go to San Francisco any longer. We just had another mass shooting in Sacramento our State Capital … too many senseless shootings in America 😞 I love the West Coast though, Highway 1 is stunning from South Cali to North Pacific. I’m moving one state up North to Oregon. Gorgeous green state with a lot of trees, rivers and cost of living is cheaper. @@mmaries9052 I'm really sorry to hear about that, I heard it wasn't what it once was but still here when we think of the US we think of the California coast, the state is still really admired in Europe, I really like the scenery of Ireland, the rolling green hills the beautiful mountains and bogs near my home. People around me are connected with nature and that's something I admire. The things I don't like are the gloomy weather we rarely get blue sky's. It rains a lot here and it's very cold, summer is near though so it's due a change, also England isn't liked in Ireland so the politics are often toxic. Had seen video on town before but yours was very good. Keep bringing it w real stories of teal people from real places.
fascinating, peter. this piece reminds of the type of feature that the light-hearted reporters on shows like "60 minutes" used to do. i like the extended length that allows you to go more in depth than allotted time of tv shows. i gave up cable tv and getting adjusted to life without it. i realized i was not interested in ninety nine percent of what was being beamed into my home. thanks for your work. cheers!

Pete, you raise a very good point that connects with a quote I heard a long time ago about New York City being a town of over 8 million lonely people. Meaning you may be surrounded by people all around. But, it does not cure loneliness. Excellent video! Cheers!
Ricke Guitar, that seems to be true of people crammed into big cities, in general. Maybe it's cultural -- but which culture, in a big city? Lol! But it seems to me that really rural and big cities are similar in needing space between people, with a fair amount of freedom, whereas in small towns, people seem to cluster more tightly together, as if for closer connections. The suburbs with the 5-acre lots, house in the middle, no sidewalks, too far to walk to services places I've known are the most isolated places for individuals. Just my experience.
Feeling lonely or feeling content is a state of mind. I don’t need to live in the middle of nowhere to feel bliss. NYC is a place I spend a lot of time working but for me it’s a bit over stimulating. I have a house in a rural New England town with a large piece of property. It’s perfect. Some may need this much quite but for most it’s a little over the top. Most of my life I have lived in the rural town and for most it’s to remote, it snows to much and the winters are to cold. Most people I find need things around them. Life is easier in the city for most, not me I perfect the woods.
Wonderful video, Peter. Please thank your wife, Natalia for her terrific work. It is greatly appreciated. We live in a big city that has had a spike in crime for a number of years. The pandemic only made things worse. We live among many but still feel very isolated; afraid to go out after dark and being suspicious and wary when we do venture out. I don't think I have the strength or resourcefulness of these folks but a large part of me really envies them. Thanks again.

I am quite familiar with the town. I have done a considerable amount of exploration to include several mining claims just south of this town. In my early life I lived in a small desert town in North Central Nevada, I love it high and dry and with few primates around. Nevada and a few parts of remote California are still my favorite. I was a long time friend of Gordon Newell and his wife. Several times he invited me to go there and sculpt, something I did before I got a "real" job. Interesting "interview".
"We have had only one fight in thirty years!"
Peter "but you've been divorced twice"
😂😂😂 that was a savage comment
They really forgot they were divorced twice lol

If there’s one thing I LOVE about Peter in all of his videos is how he shows respect and unbiased views to the people he meets and interviews , so much so that You can’t tell whether he agrees or disagrees or likes or dislikes something. That’s growth on a different level , and I have learned something from you. Keep up the great work!

What I really love about watching your documentaries is that I get to listen to interesting people with interesting lives and be presented with ideas that make me think outside the box. I love it!
This was fascinating. These people have a better sense of community that I do in my suburban home. Such fascinating people. Thank you for this.

Enjoyed this as I've lived remote offgrid. For practical reasons moved to small town. When you have sense of community, purpose, belonging you have everything. I struggle with that balance every day. Want to move... unsure where. These folks seem so thankful and content. I admire that.

for sure. also mojitos. they are magical too.

The desert is beautiful and I love to drive through it, but I do not want to live in it like these people do. Its hot enough in Phoenix and there are way too many snakes and scorpions here...I can't imagine what they are like there. I love small town, rural living, but in greener places.

Hello Peter ,,
A wonderful episode, This spot is similar to many spots here that we have it in Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦
We have many villages and desert deserts in which very few people live.
I was wondering if Ghost Town Living would be mentioned 😊
I spent 3 weeks traveling the country last August. My wife and I were trying to hit as many mountain biking destinations as possible. It made me realize I'm definitely about this life. We're not able to do it full time right now because of our jobs, but we're planning another 3 week trip, and I think we might buy the RV this time instead of renting.
Peter, we appreciate the hard work your wife and yourself do to be 'timely' with the content. Thank you!
You should take a trip to Cerro Gordo and visit Brent Underwood! He also got a channel called Ghost Town Living. Would be a great collab
I like the town of Cerro Gordo but Brent is an oddball.
@Hailey
It’s really hypocritical to be so anti-mining, but want to preserve an old mining town.
We hope to go up someday and help on one of his volunteer days
I want to see his shop with all the relics
If Peter could venture up there now that would be awesome. I don’t think he’s far from where this town is
@@Meekerextreme I'd assume only oddballs would use their entire life savings to buy an old decrepit mining town lol

My grandpa told storied about always keeping guns because that's how bad the fued was.
by definition, if you are a genuine hippy then you are emphatically not into guns. Just sayin...
Just fascinating to see perspective about life from these folks. World has become so congested and life became so stressful that we often forget about freedom in our life we may cherish time to time. Those were the days when folks used to enjoy late evening coffee at front porch. Not anymore.

All of the land in that city is privately owned by individuals.
Most of the surrounding land is privately owned by various private mining operations (still active).
The remaining surrounding land…is either BLM of NPS (Bureau of Land Management or National Park Service).
You’d have to purchase land/home from an exiting owner.
There’s a couple listing on Re-Max:
2 bed 1 bath 1.9 acres….$151,000
You don’t.
Lol
Literally…you either wake up at 4am, and get as much done as you can before the sun comes up.
Or you sleep during the day with AC…and do your chores at night.
It’s kind of like how people in the North deal with Winter…but opposite.
You don’t do any large projects or tasks, outside, between May and September.
Even the National Parks in the area shut down for a large portion for the summer season.
Thanks!

San Francisco was always fun to go visit. We have beautiful landscape, Yosemite National Park is my favorite. California is beautiful but the problem with high cost of living, taxes and homelessness is on the rise and it’s no longer what it once was.
From very over crowded south coast England, a thought proving film. Just so differnet to life in UK. Thankyou.
