Hope you guys found this useful. Head over to my IG @themonochromememoirs to see a ton of sample work with this beast of a lens. Obviously I cant cover every aspect in one 15min video so any specific questions for me if you're on the fence about purchasing, just ask. Its a true workhorse!!

When I switched to mirrorless I bought a new trinity & this lense. When I compare the amount of shooting I did with each lense and how much money each earned me, I can pretty safely conclude that 2 out of the 3 trinity lenses were kinda wasted.
The 50 is so good, it's unbelievable.

    Nice review.
I've had this lens since it came out. Bought it for my portraiture and not for my event photography (because of the size). I love the lens, but have not taken it to events because of the size and weight - I use two Z6II bodies - usually one with the 85 1.8 S and the other with the 35 1.8 S - sometimes I might use the 50 1.8 S and a 24mm 1.8 S. I have been tempted to use the 50 1.2 S at events, but have just not brought myself to do so strictly because of the size/weight issue.
For portraiture, I use this lens often and it excels. Yes, Nikon needs to bring out more 1.2's - been waiting (as patiently as possible) for the 85 1.2 S - it is a little annoying that they have literally brought out 3 new 400mm lenses in the time that we have been waiting for the 85 1.2 but c'est la vie I guess. I hope that they make a 35 1.2 as well, and also a 28 1.2.
I never really used the 28mm focal length before as I do not like this focal length for portraits and as such I did not have one. I recently got the Z 28mm 2.8 lens and for fun threw it on at a friend's event that I was shooting for fun, and I really liked this focal length for event stuff although 2.8 is really too slow for the dark stuff. I don't really want to get the F mount 28 1.4 as it is expensive and I'd rather spend the money on Z lenses at this point.
By the way, and I know you really don't care at all about technical crap, but I thought I'd just mention it for educational purposes. The Z6II does not have 3D tracking. The box you are referring to is the "subject tracking" box - 3D tracking is a different technology and only currently available on the Z9 - I realize that this is largely semantics, and this comment is not meant to be a trolling comment whatsoever - just informative as some might be confused when you discuss 3D tracking with respect to the Z6II.
Anyway, love your channel and am glad you are back at it!
    All the best,
    -Baron

I have a 1.2 on the way to kick off my first wedding this season. Been practicing with my 1.8 to dial in that focal range and man I’m loving it but cannot wait to see how much more artistic and sharp the 1.2 is! I just have to remember to stop down for groups or use my 24-70 for those.

Wait til you try a Z9. Night and day difference in AF, coming from a Z6 and Z6ii. Eye-af is so sticky and it’ll focus in the darkest scenarios. Weight sucks ofc so I probably will downgrade to a Z6iii when they add the EXPEED 7 into the lighter bodies.

Two questions. Do you really have enough depth of field by shooting with f/1.2 most of the time? I could image that sometimes not all faces are in focus ...
How the Z 50/1.2 compares to the Z 50/1.8 which I have - does it really make such a huge difference?

    • @TheMonochromeMemoirs
      @TheMonochromeMemoirs  2 роки тому +3

Thanks for the great comment Markus. In regards to question one the answer is most certainly yes. I was going to do a video on this topic but what you have to remember is the razor thin DOF only really becomes an issue when you get very close to the subject, as soon as you step back and are shooting from around ~6ft away wherever you land your focus point will be in focus. I shoot at 1.2 the majority of the day and only need to pay attention to my DOF is when I get in very close with this lens. Also the 1.2s is very sharp wide open, EXTREMELY sharp at 1.8 to f/4
Second question is that I would say the 50 1.8Z is an incredible lens. Only worthy of an upgrade to the 1.2 if you sincerely need more light frequently. I can justify the cost and extra size because of reception shooting and sometimes poorly lit hotel rooms. Hope this helps!

@@TheMonochromeMemoirs - I refuse to open the aperture fully. A 2.8 lens shooting a portrait outside I set for F-4 or slightly opened more. A while ago after an outside shoot I was at an outside restaurant with a pro working for NYC Education Department. He scoffed that I was using a Nikon 85mm f1.4 not fully open. I turned to a female pro with us and shot her face at f1.4. Her nose was very sharp as I had not hit her near eye and most of her face was out of focus. Funny things happen when goofing with friends.
3D tracking is used by a pro sports guy I know and his shots are brilliant. Thanks for the awesome review, you mentioned that you use a 28mm on your other camera, which one is that? The 1.4 E? I m using a 58 1.4g now, is the 1.2 that much better?

Great channel and videos! Very helpful content. I’m a Z6ii hobbyist and wished I liked the 50mm FL. As someone who does landscapes, street, nighttime, travel, i dont think the 50 works. 3-D tracking, never used this, actually I don’t remember the Z6ii has this.

    Thanks for the video.
I had a nightmare with it as I couldn't take a shot without accidentally touching a control ring! Gorgeous rendering and incredibly sharp but I've put the 58 back in my set for weddings. I don't like any of the other z glass, it renders white skin like it has a polariser on. My wife loves her 50 z 1.8 though.
    My system is a Z9/Z7ii with 20mm 1.8g, 28mm 1.4e, 58mm 1.4g, 105mm 1.4e, 300mm f4pf.
If you tell me now that you can completely disable the big ring on the 50mm 1.2 I might replace the 58 and feel stupid for not doing it in the first place.

Dude I hear you. When I first got the beast I was nudging the ring all the time and jacking with my focus by accident. But there is hope! If you update the 50 1.2s firmware to version 1.10 it adds an option to disable the focus ring in the custom settings menu 😎

Listening carefully when you started talking about AF and strangely you didn't explicitly mentioned the body. Guessing you are using Z6ii. Surprised you "never" miss AF. Is that different from 50 1.8s?

    Hi Sir,
I have Nikon Z6 and I'm using 50mm 1.8G with FTZ. While shooting with 1.8 aperture there is slightly blur but with 2.8 aperture fine and getting sharp images. what is problem in it?
    TIA

you and I were talking about this lens on another video you posted so I went back and watched this one. You mentioned you blast a lot of photos, just curious do you use photo mechanic software for your culling process? That thing shaved hours off my sorting. It doesn’t load the raw file but the jpeg preview you see on the back on your camera allowing you to switch between images WAY after. Then you take what you want to keep and move just the good files into Lightroom. If you’re curious about it let me know. I shoot about 25-30 weddings a year in the Pacific Northwest area.

@@TheMonochromeMemoirs yeah, it’s the best unheard of program out there. That and my Loupedeck+ w/ Lightroom makes editing easy. I think I’m just gonna go ahead and buy this lens though. I’ve been toying with the idea of getting the Z9 and giving my wife our backup z 7ii body thought. Can’t have both lol decisions decisions.
