  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. When Tanvee was in 8th grade, she presented her idea to her schools TED-Ed club. She asked the question, "Why don't schools teach our youth how to properly manage their finances?" It is a simple concept, but one that most schools in the United States don't address.
Is a Freshman at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois. For almost 2 years, she has been on a mission to change curriculum standards in Illinois to include a course relating to student finances.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

My school has this class as an elective and honestly it really helped. It went over the basics of money. Saving, interest, budgeting, taxes, etc. That class helped me a lot when I went to go get my first job. What’s common sense to some isn’t always common sense to others.

Was it a hard class? I’m debating wether I should take it or not but I’m scared if it’s too hard

@@sandraarambula977 At my high school it wasn’t too bad. My teacher taught a lot of Dave Ramsey principles which I have referred to several times since graduating. I still struggle with all of the logistics, but for the most part it was helpful and not too hard. If the class is too hard then it’s probably overly complicated.

absolutely agree, Personal Finance should be thought at a young age, so kids grow up knowing how to manage their money and not spend it on overpriced shoes (for example) and ruin their credit history! Good job Tanvee!

I’m in my 20s, and I don’t remember there being a personal finance course or anything like it in my high school or college. There needs to be classes like this, in colleges too. Classes that instruct how to pay taxes and bills, get and pay off loans, the different debt management strategies, expose myths like you need a credit card and credit score, investing, savings, the different types of savings accounts, and so on and so on.
People, high school and up need these types of classes in school.

Financial Literacy must be a mandatory class in schools & universities. It’s very important

Its too late at the college level because most students agreed to drown in debt before they could even buy a textbook

School in my opinion does not teach about real financial education. I’d rather have another source teach me about financial education than school or college.

Great job Tanvee! I hope all your viewers take time to sign the petition at www.change.org/p/life-management-101 so that Arne Duncan and the Department of Education will consider how important this is for America's financial future!

We don't have an entire class unfortunately, but we do have a couple of units on personal finance in the Ontario curriculum. I am teaching it right now and want to show this video to my students about why learning about personal finance is important.

It has already been done. Have the school of your choice look into the curriculum called Foundations in Personal Finance by Dave Ramsey!!

We shouldn't have to talk about implementing finance classes into school. Like, it should be there.

There's so much more depth to this topic that she is a bit too young to have experienced. Great job nonetheless.

This is not something that should be taught in school, not everyone does things the same way when it comes to bills and financs. You can not grade people on personal choices, and common sense. The classes students need in school are enough, this is something that a parent should take the time to teach to their children.

I hate to disagree with you but a large number of parents don't understand even simple finances. It is drilled into our heads that credit is used by those that want to be successful in life and not knowing the consequences of using credit. The difference between wants and needs would be a good start. Our children are going off to college that just the year before they were looking to us their parents for answers .. the answers are not as clear as maybe they once were . It now reported that 67% of working America living from paycheck to paycheck. There is something terribly wrong when our children are coming out of college with student loan debt the size of a home mortgage. There are fewer and fewer of opportunities for employment for graduates coming out college.More and more of our children future are being taking away before they ever begin and the sad part it's only getting worse

+Anthony Eller I agree with Anthony and Tanvee. Personal finance is so important for everybody. If you make a poor financial decision early in your life, you could end up spending years trying to recover from it or pursuing short-term solutions for your long-term career, family, etc. detriment. I think that "punishment" for an early mistake is becoming more and more burdensome. So I think it's even more important today to teach our kids about personal finance. Let's cut out "wood shop" or "home ec" and replace it with a basic personal finance class for our kids.

It's not about what personal choices you make but how to make good choices, how to prepare a budget, how to manage credit, prepare taxes etc. These are skills not choices.

problem is if these parents are bad with money then you are in trouble teaching them the wrong way to deal with money.
