I like to dump a gallon of antifreeze into the waste tanks too to keep any liquid from freezing around the valves.

Yes! Thanks for sharing Brian. I like to run a bit extra down the drains so they get in the tank too. Should probably do a little more like you suggest for that extra safety. -M

Before you begin, you need to decide whether you are going to blow out your water lines or fill them with antifreeze. Doing both is redundant and unnecessary. Also, you need to turn off the water lines feeding into and out of the water heater and then open the water heater bypass valve. I unscrew the hot water tank drain either plug or anode rod and leave it behind the water heater door through the winter. All of this before you begin. Next you need to install a suction line with a shut off valve to the inlet side (suction side) of your water pump followed by shut off valve to your fresh water tank if you decided to go the antifreeze route. My RV came with these already installed when I bought it, but I am not sure if all do. You do this only once and then leave this to be used year after year. Open the low point drain for your water tank and let it drain. Put the suction side of the hose in the antifreeze bottle and turn on your pump. Draw enough through each faucet and shower hose until it runs the color of your antifreeze. It is important to pour enough antifreeze into each drain (sinks, showers, etcetera) to keep the traps from bursting when the water in the trap has not been displaced. One year, I did not get enough into the bathroom sink and on first use in the spring, found that all of our towels and wash cloths were prewetted. OOPS!!!

Thanks Carl. Yes... having a bypass for taking in the antifreeze is especially cool if you have an RV with large tanks because it is more efficient. The one extra benefit of blowing out the lines before using the antifreeze that I see is that the previous water in the lines does not dilute the antifreeze, which makes it more pure, and also allows it to be reused. And yes.. if not a cold environment, many people will just blow out lines. But I have seen issues with RVs that only did the air method that store in cold environments. Thanks again for sharing. -M

You might mention to put the water tank cap in a good place, not on the ground. I've lost 2 of them. Yow won't ake that mistake again. Those of us who saw it won't make that mistake at all. Thanks for sharing it. Julie's laughter was even funnier.

Hi Mark & Julie, it's nice to see you again. What would happen if the water lines are drained but not filled with anti-freeze?

    • @Rvlove

Some people do that - like a desert winterization - if you don't see freezing temps it should be OK but not worth the risk in a much colder northern environment, as water could condensate, accumulate and freeze - and it's not worth the risk/cost of damage, expensive plumbing repairs. One of the most common times for RV warranty companies to see a high number of claims is when people are getting their rigs out of winter storage - issues with dewinterizing when things have gone wrong. Hope that helps!

The handle section of a 1 gallon plastic milk jug makes a great right-angle funnel for filling that water tank.
