- "Smooth Criminal" is the seventh single from Michael Jackson's Bad album (1988). The song contains a fast-paced beat intertwined with Jackson's lyrics about a woman named Annie, who has been attacked in her apartment by a "smooth" assailant. It was released as a single on October 24, 1988 and peaked at 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was re-released on April 10, 2006 as a part of the Visionary: The Video Singles box-set. The re-released Visionary single charted at #19 in the UK. In 2003, the song appeared on the Number Ones greatest hits album.

The beat is so on point
I heard this one when I was 19. I heard it every time I was alone outside in the winter and it was really cold and the path I was walking was really, really far. with the certainty that at the end of the path there will be no one waiting for me. I only had the things in my head that I wanted, that I longed for, and the bass beat away all the physical pain. as if I were about to ram my fingers into my chest. To open him up, to see the organs falling out to make room for the cold air to come in, which numbs my soul and causes me to impress, leading to the total collapse of my feelings and my conscience. To be who I thought I had to be, to get the things I wanted out of life. This was my point of reference, my polar star and the model that I set for myself based on the knowledge and impressions I had at the time. I didn't have anything else at the time.
The song has not lost its impact. But today I'm doing so damn well that I even have friends who know me and hate me so deeply. I even let them attack me, let them hit me. like a fingernail scratching on a diamond. not worth mentioning.
