Wonderful story. My dad was an engineer for Chevrolet and brought all these cars home from work and we used to take them out after dinner and drive the wheels off....from early 60's on....Corvettes, Chevelles, Impalas...later 60's/early 70's Camaros. Drove some epic vintage Chevy musclecars from big block Corvettes...probably most famous was LS-6 Chevelle with Muncie 4 speed. What a car this is who happened to find the right owner. Sometimes, things go as they should.
    Thanks for sharing.

An old friend of mine traded in his red '62 Impala for a new red '67 Impala SS 427 just like this one...except his is an auto trans. Same black vinyl roof....black interior....no a/c!

I bought a brand new SS427, all red with white interior. But, I didn't have the wisdom to keep it. I loved my car, and won lots of races with it. There is one difference in my car from Lou's car. Mine had SS427 emblems on the steering wheel and not a Chevrolet bowtie emblem, and it had SS427 emblem on the dash, instead of the words Super Sport.I still have the original 427 engine, as the young man that bought my car promptly spun a bearing. His dad bought a new short block, and I changed it out for them, and I kept the original engine, minus the heads and intake. It was a great, very solid car that I should have kept!

When I was in high school my paternal grandmother, who couldn't read a calendar any better than she could read a map forgot how old I was and I easily conned her into buying me a 1968 Impala 396. It was not an SS but it was factory ordered with twin pipes, cornering lights, bumper guards, FM stereo, power seats & windows, SS gauge package with tachometer, etc.
Dude, I thought my poopoo was pristine with one of the nicest cars in Student Parking lot. But I thought it was strange that in 1968, Chevrolet made the standard Impala a fastback roof and a formal notchback for the Super Sport.

HI Lou. Thanks for another trip down memory lane. Not only a beautiful car but a fantastic story from a passionate owner. The 67 Impala SS was one of my early favorites. Growing up I had a friend whose dad left a brown SS396 convertible 4 speed to rust in their side yard. My friend and I kept trying to fix it up but the old steed was beyond the limited skills and funds of a couple of starry eyed 14 year olds. The rust was so bad the back seat fell out while we were back there trying to work on getting the top fully closed. It was a sad sad day when the tow truck hauled the carcass away. I always thought one day I would find another. This car story brought back a lot of memories. I especially loved the part about the hub caps. The key story was especially sentimental.

Fabulous car, Ron. I had a '68 solid Red Sport Coupe Impla with fender skirts i got from my uncle n '69 who was a salesman at our Chevy dealer. I kept that car over 20 years as my daily driver....loved it. Ran it's fanny off on top-end, cruised on highway at 70-80 like a cloud, and had great acoustics.

My grandpa had a red 67 Impala. He got broadsided when I was very young and the car was totaled. If memory serves me right, he replaced it with a 72 Impala, so I must have been around 5 years old when this happened. That 67 was the coolest car my grandpa ever owned. It had that fastback style roof, but I have no idea what engine it had in it.

Hi Lou I was 13 years old in 1967 and I was a car nut even then. I wondered why there were two versions of the Impala SS that year, but there were. One was the "regular" Super Sport which could be ordered with any engine, it was a separate model from the Impala series. Additionally you could order the "SS 427" package on any Super Sport, and you got that louvered hood, special SS 427 emblems (which replaced the regular " Impala SS badges), plus the 427 motor and other performance upgrades. So there really WERE two Impala Super Sports that year!

Always enjoyed taking the car to Skips drive in on North avenue to show it off ,it wasn’t the fastest but sure got some looks. Sold it a year or so later to someone in Kankakee IL ,one of my big mistakes in life and I would love to know if it’s being taking care of today. All I have is a few pictures of it and very fond memories of it. Gorgeous car - I always wanted an impala SS with the 4 speed. Had a red 68 Chevelle SS 396 4 speed when I was much younger but it had the 325 hp version. It’s probably still out there somewhere.

My dad bought a black 67 SS 427 automatic back in the early 70's. Being a theft recovery, the 427 had been replaced with a 396 from a chevelle. I think the 396 may have seen more than a few hard miles prior to it's rendezvous with the SS Impala, it never seem to perform at the level one would expect. I know it had to be in good tune because my dad did a lot of drag racing back in the day. On the other hand, it may have been a misconception due to all those "test drives" I took as a kid in some really gnarly tri-five drag cars.
Sadly, I could write a book about all the then inexpensive now valuable cars that have passed through my family's hands over the years and I'm just as guilty as may dad. As to what happened to the 67 SS 427 with the 396, it was replaced by a 327 Impala wagon a few years later.

Mopar guy here but man she is a beauty. My favorite Chevy's were always the full size cars. Thats a beautiful 67 SS427. I always wondered why Chevy got stingy with their hottest big blocks for that one year. The L72 427/425 wasnt offered in the full size cars in 67 for some reason and the L78 396/375 wasn't even listed as an option in the brochures for the Camaro SS and Chevelle SS. But both engines became RPO options again in 1968 and remained through the 69 model year.

I guess that Chevy dealer really drove a hard bargain! I mean, was $50 that big a deal even in '67? Even if Ron's dad thought Ron was dumb, no one could fault him for taste. This car is slick, especially in that Bolero Red paint, AND it's an SS 427! If I had something as special and rare as this that I had bought new, I wouldn't want to sell it either! Nothing dumb about that!
BTW, my grandmother drove a 1967 Impala 4-door sedan when I was growing up, Sierra Fawn with black cloth and vinyl interior. As always, thanks for sharing all these great stories!

It also was a black interior car. Lou, at spot 3:07 he started to explain how he sold the car to his cousin when he went in the Navy and how his cousin had taken it apart and stored it away.....and then you interrupted him to focus on the trunk KEY! ARGH!! Well, the prices were so cheap back then because people would think in 1967, "2000 dollars sounds like a lot" 1967 to them in money is like 15,000-20,000 dollars to us.
A Lamborghini back then was 400,000 to 900,000 dollars around the 80s
The US National Debt in 1992 was 4 trillion dollars, as according to ross perot. Its 22 trillion now.
See those then and now? It totally makes sense how cars were around the average price of 2000-2500 dollars

I can certainly relate to 427 Impalas at that time as I was also 19-years-old and joined the navy in July of 1967. But prior to joining the navy I was only making $1.50/hour and hardly had two nickels to rub together, and could only hope and dream of owing such a fine, fine car. What I want to know is why his cousin tore the car apart! Surely, he came home (after boot camp and possibly once a year). I think I would have torn my cousin apart once I got home!
