I remember when our church tried to tell us KISS stood for Kids In Satan's Service and I was like, "no way, they helped Scooby-doo and the gang solve that mystery in the haunted amusement park!" Probably how I started to really question the so-called authority figures.
yeah i remember that Except i was told it was Kids in the Service of Satan LOL... it was the day that i realize a lot of adults were fucking idiots because I KNEW i wasn't in the service of satan
@@streetguru3054 they went metal before those bands even existed. They delved into some harder sounds right at the tail end of the 70s, and took off their makeup shortly after Vinnie replaced Ace in '81. The earlier part of that foray into metal is not to be dismissed. Creatures of the Night, Lick it Up, and Animalize had some wicked old school bangers with a sound more akin to Scorpions than to Poison, whose scene was barely beginning to get respect from the industry. If there's a time they betrayed their own creative interest in favor of selling better, it's when they put the makeup back on over a decade later. .. But metal Kiss is vastly underrated.
You know why young people don't really appreciate Kiss? Because their album sound has been so lousy and thin through 70's. If you only focus on studio albums, their eponymous album (that came in 74, of all things) sounds nowhere near as innovative or stylistically important to hard rock and heavy as things british bands had done in previous 5 years.
Also to follow: Destroyer probably was the biggest influence in terms of metal, but again it came same year as Sad Wings of Destiny, Virgin Killer, Rainbow Rising etc... Looking anachronistically, it makes them sound dated at the time.
@@stevedonahue7956 Paul and Gene ARE KISS. That's why they want you to forget that Ace and Peter were even born. So hating them is basically hating KISS, at least nowadays. You can retroactively hate them and still like the old stuff without hating the band as a whole, though, I guess.
Kiss got me into heavy metal! I bought "animalize" after seeing "heavens on fire" in '84 , and it was off to the races! People hating kiss is nothing new! I remember having to defend them from day 1!
"People hating Kiss is nothing new" proof the title of this video is bullshit as many adults hate Kiss and their need to compensate for their lame softcore "glam metal" by putting on gimmicky face paint
@ Not even going to bother if your got such a narrow minded view on what is metal and what is not.....i assume you would say Sabbath not metal cuz they are blues based band....or that Deep Purple not Metal cuz they got Keyboards.....i was around when it all started and back then mate they all where considered Heavy Metal because there was nothing else like it......it was the beginning and everything starts some where...
@ I'm a big kiss nut but I have to agree here. Kiss arent "metal" per say. they're a rock band that have dabbled in a little but of everything. They've done metal songs, disco songs, pop songs, etc. But at their heart, they play rock.
@@KombatRealm Yeah they had some variety on their albums but mainly heavy in concert. I never walked out of their shows saying "not heavy enough". Their songs were always heavier played live. Even their so called disco song. It sounds weak, poppy and disco like on the album but has a heavier sound to it live.
“Regardless of what you want to say about KISS musically or otherwise, their was no one more determined or worked harder to putting on a spectacular show than KISS. That was good to for us to see.” Geddy Lee
Dude I fricken love KISS. They actually opened my eyes to a world of Rock music. And props to them, they’re a big influence on my band. Long live the Shock Rock Legends
I been listening to kiss since I was a kid, they were just so different with their look and attitude, I’m only 20 and I feel like I’m the only guy my age who really appreciates kiss for what they’ve done for the rock and metal scene
Gabi Francis nice. A few years back years back I heard Shout It Loud on a Kiss and Scooby Doo show when I was in 3rd grade or so. After liking a bit of Queen in 4rth grade, I bought Kiss’ Greatest Hits and fell in love
Same. KISS was a real new thing. People (adults) were terrified of them. Not my parents. They got it but many were looking at them like they were minions of the antichrist.
Hello There Queen had heavier songs than Kiss Flick of the wrist, Stone cold crazy, Sheer heart attack, Face facts Kiss are not a metal band and nothing wrong with that but I stole your love has more similarities with The Beatles than Black Sabbath. I am knocking them I like 70’s Kiss and even liked their Wings cover which was surprisingly good.
I went full circle with Kiss, loved them in the 70's hate them, and love them again (the original Kiss anyway). Kiss is not pop but their songs are catchy, they are not metal but their riffs are heavy. Most important of all their songs are fun to play.
I feel like in the 70's KISS (along with Black Sabbath) were playing straight-up ahead-of-its-time heavy metal (Parasite, Detroit Rock City, Love Gun, I Stole Your Love and etc). Even Judas Priest started having 'metal' sound only in later part of the decade
Just a few more to add to the amazing lyrics KISS has created, “Put your hand in my pocket, grab on to my rocket” “She’s been around, but she’s young and clean” (as well as the rest of Christine sixteen) “So if you please, get on your knees. There are no bills, there are no fees”
If you listed all of the musicians that said they were fans of KISS as teens and kids it would be pages and pages long! If it wasn't for me discovering KISS, I wouldn't be here today! Their music was fun and my escape from the Hell that my life was growing up.
7:20 Shots like this are unnatural. It feels weird watching someone talking to the audience when they aren't looking straight into the camera. I've never liked when they did this shit. The only acceptation to this is when you're interviewing someone who is sitting beside you. Don't film the narrator from the side. It doesn't make the shot look cool or edgy. It just makes it look like the camera man has no idea wtf they are doing.
Gene ( Demon ) Simmons made you look back in 76’77’ Ace kept you there! They were a rolling freight train. Alice started it, Kiss perfected it. Remember kids, they didn’t have a fan club, they had an Army!
I'm too "young" to have grown up with kiss (born 1985). Me and my friends we loved, loved, loved the movie Detroit Rock City as teenagers, though (came out in 1999). I recommend this movie to any Kiss or Metal Fan 😊. 1999 was also the year I got into Slipknot and have been a huge fan ever since. I remember learning about Kiss in Detroit Rock City and thinking to myself "they are the Slipknot of the 70s. Back in the day I would have been a member of the Kiss Army for sure." 😊
You are correct! KISS was the Slipknot of the 70's, they came up with whole hidden identity thing and for almost 10 years they were able to keep what they really looked like a secret, of course the media actually was playing along with them lol. I mean, they never hid their true names or where they went to school or who they hung out with so when you think about it, somebody had to have a yearbook picture of them, a concert picture of them from previous bands. In fact drummer Peter Criss was in a band called Chelsea and Chelsea made one album and on the cover of that album there was Peter Criss (Crisceolo, however he spelled it lol) without any make up. Wicked Lester, Paul and Gene's old band had flyers all over NYC with their pictures on it. So now looking back we can see that the media was not interested in showing us their true identities because it was all part of the show, part of the game. Lol in today's world the media would reveal their true identity so fast it would make your head spin.
KISS was really what ”started” rock n roll for me in 76 when i heard ”Destroyer”. They where really the only band that counted to me during my childhood.
I was 13 years old when I kept seeing this commercial on TV for a cd titled 'The Very Best of KISS' and it was just so intriguing. Well, I bit the bullet, bought the cd, and now, 18 years later, KISS is still my favorite band and it's not even close.
Gene: I will be a Demon! Paul: I will be a Star Child! Ace: I will be a Space Man! Peter: Can I be a kitty cat? Saw an interview with Gene years ago, where he said something to the effect of: "Kiss are like a carnival, you come along, you have a great time, but sooner or later you realise you're being ripped off"
Peter had the cat makeup because he had so many accidents and brushes with death that he was thought to have 9 lives like a cat, which makes it a bit less lame in my book. Pretty badass actualy
Every single musician I've talked to, or followed on social media in some way shocased how much influence Kiss had on him. And most of those are metal musicians.
@@TH3F4LC0Nx Once they put on the makeup they decided to focus on their 70's stuff. It had nothing to do with whether or not the 80's/90's stuff was good. CREATURES OF THE NIGHT still remains one of the best rock albums of the 1980's.
KISS ruled in the 70's, Kiss were great in the 80's and to see the reunion tour in 1996 was awesome, they should have retired in 2000 and not keep going with tommy and eric
TwistOfMetal I am not a big fan of Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer I only have one album that they are in Sonic Boom and they don’t sound like the old KISS
Tommy and Eric ain’t as bad as people say tho. Tommy is a solid replacement (Definitely not better by any means but still pretty good) and Eric is a nice consistent drummer who provides excellent background vocals
@@protestssopeacefulweneedad2017 Backstreet Boys and Poison were like KISS - they used synchronized stage moves in their shows. Very influential band. Spice Girls and Britney Spears stole idea of selling pens, T-shirts, wallets etc. And what about Mötley Crue and Steel Panther? They became even more popular than Kiss. Kiss is Village People of rock music.
What's great about them is that they're loved, hated, but never ignored. And every band they opened for or opened for them got blown off the stage, nobody and I mean NOBODY came close.
My only problem with KISS is that they had their "Farewell Tour" in 2000...and I went to see it, because it was history and nostalgic. NOT!!! Bastards were out touring again THE VERY NEXT YEAR! And fir 20 years after that. That was a big F-You to everyone who saw them "for the last time" only to be played for fools. I have been done with them since.
It was October 1998, and I remember it was supposed to be their farewell tour which was the only time I saw them for the exact reason you gave. They are playing this week at Staples and I was offered free tix(private suite/meet&greet) and said: "Pass".
Never got KISS. Listened to the same music as my parents as a kid, still have my favorites there, but my introduction to hard rock I LIKED came from Heart’s Barracuda some years after discovering KISS. Then it was Pat Benatar. THEN it was Black Sabbath. Now Pat and her husband put one one hell of a show. And Heart is also a legend. As for influence? I guess the best thing about KISS is all the kids who listened to them and thought “hey, I can do that at least as well as they do” to actually discover they were right.
@Tom Ffrench I wouldn't say, people dislike their music id say, people, dislike that they made a career off of being a gimmick and while actually excepting to be taken seriously. Sure they paved the way for the worst era of rock besides Nickelback and also inspired more flavor in concerts. But other than that they haven't done anything to get all excited about. They have even acknowledged that their songs are boring and tasteless.
Problem with kiss is that, that they are no longer a band. It becames some kins of creepy corporatiom selling lietarly everything. "Kids" wants to esperience rock'n roll power, not to watch some cringe commercial happening on stange
Kiss have ALWAYS been that, and have made no bones about it. They wanted to be the biggest band in the world, and for a few years they were. EVERY kid (abt 13 and under) between 1975 and 79 loved them.
Your comment makes no sense..u must be new to the scene..their theatrics have alway been there!! Always!! They beat every band to the punchline...name one band who doesnt sell T shirts..posters...
I got into KISS in 1976. They were my Beatles. My parents and teachers were hoping it was a faze, sorry it wasn’t. I’m still love them as much as I did back then. Love live KISS.
People who hate on KISS or think that they’re overrated, should watch the video of Tom Morello inducting KISS in the Rock And Toll Hall of Fame.. The BEST Hall of Fame induction EVER!
When people talk about First Wave British metal they mention the (Un)Holy Trinity of Sabbath, Zeppelin and Purple. No one can talk about First Wave American metal without mentioning Kiss.👅
They were not a metal band. Neither are Led Zeppelin or Deep Purple. Blue Cheer, Iron Butterfly and Steppenwolf were around half a decade before Kiss, but they're also not metal, though I think they were more metal than Kiss, musically. Kiss kinda became metal in the 80's when they changed their sound and took off the makeup. I can't think of a legitimately metal American band before Van Halen, who get to be metal by default of being exactly what metal became for a while.
@@morgellon9449 That's your opinion. KISS were described in the mid seventies with the words heavy metal in one connotation or another by the rock media. Billboard said in a review of their Vegas concert in May of 75 that KISS "unleashed controlled chaos in visual heavy metal" with a sound that rivaled "nuclear detonations at nearby Yucca Flats." There was another one with a British reporter who used the words heavy metal when reporting on the first KISS visit to England in early 76. In 2020 it's easy to say KISS weren't metal but in 1975 you couldn't. Also. KISS was one of the few bands back then that would actually call themselves heavy metal. One of their early (maybe 1973) concert announcement posters that they made up read "Heavy Metal masters KISS".
@@morgellon9449 Interesting analysis, though not one i can entirely agree with. First of all, many fans would laugh at the suggestion that Van Halen is metal. I think they are, but they're really a different kind of metal than say Iron Maiden. But before VH there was Blue Oyster Cult, Mountain, Iron Butterfly, Montrose, among others. But let's face it, "heavy metal" as a genre has been twisted and sliced and smashed into a bunch of different sub-genres. Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple all can make a claim to playing metal, although both Zeppelin and Purple wanted nothing to do with the term. Fact: Geezer Butler is quoted in Tony Iommi's autobiography "Iron Man" that Zeppelin was the "heaviest thing around," and their goal was to be heavier. Zeppelin was clearly heavy. It was a bluesy heavy, mostly, but a handful of songs off LZ I and III, along with Immigrant Song from III are heavy metal-esque. Zeppelin was compared to Cream and Hendrix in those early years ('68 as the New Yardbirds, '69-70 as Zeppelin). Sabbath added the "doom" to the metal sound. At the same time, Purple, Mark II with Iam Gillian on vocals, added technicality and speed to their new metal sound. So... heavy metal: bluesy for Zeppelin, doom like for Sabbath, and technical virtuosity and speed for Purple. All metal. But wait! Right around this time two other bands came on the scene (more than two, really, but bare with me). They were the Scorpions and Judas Priest. Listen to those old Scorpion records with Uli Roth and Michael Schenker on guitars. '72s Lonesome Crow, Fly to the Rainbow in '74 -- that's metal, baby! And nothing like the Unholy Trinity, either. The Scorpions, and in '74 Priest as well, followed the metal of Hendrix, who happens to be American. Read KK Downing's recent autobiography. He says it straight: Priest's biggest influence was not Sabbath, it was Hendrix. Downing says that metal started with Hendrix. It's right there in his book. (Great read BTW.) And, Downing adds, that between '74-'78 only one band was playing the kind of speed driven, riff based metal that Priest was playing and that was the Scorpions. Of course, Uli Roth married Hendrix's girlfriend after Hendrix died. Ahhh, the Hendrix-Scorps-Priest connection. Around this time...'76... Blackmore teams up with Ronnie James Dio to produce what many (many many) critics say is the first true heavy metal album, Rainbow Rising. I don't agree, but for the type of metal the critics are referring to...maybe it is. Anyhow, my point is that heavy metal has tons of beginnings and off shoots. But there's lots of metal, even Zeppelin (whether Page and Plant like it or not). Oh... I watched a UA-cam video where Pete Townshend makes the claim to have started metal. Now that's something I can't agree to! I love the Who, but they were never metal! Punk, edgy hard rock...but metal? Come on, Pete!
@@Deucealive75 Well said Deuce. The NME in England in 1977 described their music as "recycled heavy metal grunge." Zeppelin, Purple and Butterfly played heavy metal though not exclusively. Like many bands of their time, they were varied in their music.
@@LzCoda I'm with you on this, Bob. Truth is, right from the late 60s heavy metal was actually full of sophistication and variation. That made early metal interesting.
I never got 'Kiss'. I never got the merchandising and the dressing up like them. I don't think you can call them metal. More hard rock too my ears. That said, I like 'Detroit Rock City' and ' Strutter'. Those are good songs despite me. I guess you're all talking about the theatrics with the show. I don't associate that with 'metal'. I just think of Sabbath on stage no frills when I think 'metal' and the origins of the sound.
The line between hard rock and metal is blurry, and changes with time. But KISS was much more "metal" than, say, Aerosmith, Queen, Pink Floyd or even Led Zeppelin. Those were their contemporaries in the 70s. Even in the 80s, they were just as Glam Metal as Poison, or Dokken, or The Scorpions.

Look, KISS might be an influence, but every song is just one or two lines repeated for 4 minutes to the same melody even. I can't listen to them anymore, 25 seconds into the song and you have heard the entire thing already. I guess they have some wild make up though.
I love KISS. They are the reason I picked up guitar, they are the reason I got into music. I'm not blind though, I understand why some people wouldn't like them. Thank you for doing a really good video showing the importance of the "Hottest Band in the World!!!"
Back in the 70s when I was in third grade I bought the Kiss album to show and tell to show the whole classroom one of the first metal bands I listen to
@@jasonlieberman4606 did not see that, but I recall listening to this album and noticing how cool it was with lots of chops and killer drums and catchy hooks. I didn’t respect kiss as a band till Animalize.
Kiss is important to human history. It's not a band that I like that much, but I trully respect them, and consider them amongst the greatest bands in history without hesitate. If you don't like them, it's ok, but saying crap about them is stupid.
@@needlesinmyeyes7272 Of course. There will be folks in the year 2873 talking about the rock bands of the XX century. They've changed the way of music forever.
Kiss sold their image more than anything, if they were the first to do anything and stand out from every other band in history and leavevtheir footprint behind then that's selling their image more than anybody else.
KISS were more influential in the theatrics department than actual musical innovation. They started out as basically just a dirty, sleazy hard rock band with a unique image. Other than Frehley, they aren't really renowned as either masterful musicians or vocalists. Still, they've earned their place in the annals of rock and metal, even though they did sell out basically any time the musical landscape changed.
Metalheads deny KISS' influence because of how mainstream it is, and also because of Dinasty and that embarrasing hair metal era. But put that aside and their early work with the original line up had some pretty heavy sound and althought Paul and Gene are cash-hungry dickheads, Ace is a respected icon in rock n roll
The moment I heard Detroit Rock City on Paul Blart Mall Cop when I was a kid, I knew that song was special even though I didn’t understand anything then. It must have been very much the first moment I got into music.
Absolutely. Metal has a lot of influences that aren't necessarily liked by metal listeners. Whether it's the Beatles' song Helter Skelter, or even Jethro Tull's Aqualung (No Tull is no way a metal band, but there were a few songs that definitely had an influence on the sound of the genre), or even a Zeppellin song like Kashmir - you kind of mix in a number of influences to create something new - and there's a lot of Kiss in metal.
No mention of David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust and Diamond Dogs performances? And, for that matter, what about The Tubes "Quay Lewd" show? .. . seems EVERYBODY fails to mention THAT in these discussions on outrageous theatrical stage presentations.
I'm (only) 20 and I got into metal when I was 14 and I could not STAND KISS. I had a cringy elitist mindset when I was younger. I've recently come to love KISS and I don't really know why. There's just something about them. I know they don't have the greatest discography but man some of their early shit was just groundbreaking. Gene going on that talk show in the 70s in full Demon character, makeup and clothes, that was fucking METAL. you can hate the music but you gotta respect eBay KISS has done for rock and metal
I saw KISS in 78 it was a twelve year olds dream come true absolutely amazing!;Musically I stopped listening at age 14 and started liking AC/DC ZEP ect.. From age 8-12 I was a KISS fanatic
That sounds about Right. If I had been 8 to 12 when Kiss came out I might not have hated them so much. But for me at 14 their bubble gum glam shite was an insult t the music I LOVED after the Beatles, Doors and Led Zeppelin!
Kiss was probably the first ever band to call themselves Heavy Metal, as it was used on their early flyers as far back as 1973. While the other bands of the 70s didn't like the term, as they saw it as derogatory.... yes including Sabbath and Priest. Who both only eventually embraced the term because of the NWOBHM movement.
Anyone hating a band that they don't listen to is heavy-metal- nerdism & fanboyism of the highest kind & ought to be left in the school playground. Sadly, hating bands that aren't percieved to be "metal" seems to be part of the metal fraternity. Who cares about "true metal / false metal" bullshit.
I’m 37 years old, and a lifelong metal fan….. I thought I didn’t like KISS, but after seeing a great KISS tribute band I realized KISS has a lot of songs that I enjoyed but didn’t know it was them🤷♂️ I believe they are an important band to hard rock whether you like them or not. I’m pretty much repeating the video…….
Without shitty glam metal, image-heavy 80s hair metal would never have happened. KISS are definitely an important part of heavy metal. They helped to make it immeasurably-bad for nearly a decade.
I love certain periods of Kisstory. I can't see how people can't see how KISS influenced other top rock/metal bands. Love em or hate them, they have cemented their place in Rock history.
For countless kids during the late 70s, Kiss was their introduction to rock and roll. It was comics, monsters and superheroes all rolled into one, so that drew you in. The music was simple yet heavy for the time. You started with Kiss then began to explore other bands. Unless you were of that age during that time, it's hard to fully understand their impact.
They're kinda important to my little hometown area. We're the only ones on the planet with a monument dedicated to them for an insane few days when the band took over the town and high school.
You are from Cadillac ehh? I lived most of my adult life in the Ludington/Scottville area and even there KISS was a huge deal because of what they did in Cadillac! My ex brother in law attended school in Cadillac and he was there when KISS showed up. He always tried to tell me that the school really hated KISS but they were paid to act like they loved them. He even said the kids in school were paid by the band to act like they were fans lol. Yeah, he hated KISS but I bet you anything at the time when KISS was at his school, Old Joe was probably excited as hell and probably wore the make up as well!! His name is Joe Mowry, you familiar with him? He passed away 2 years ago now though.
@@alabamahebrew I was in second grade in a school district bordering Cadillac and lived in Cadillac since 1985. It was a huge thing to the area for years after. I know a few of the football players from that season and it was definitely not staged by the band especially considering the city council at the time would not have allowed the band to come if they felt it could bring any bad press to the area. Cadillac KISS visit was just something that happened because the coach pulled it off and was put together in a short time that could never be pulled off again. We have the KISS visit, you all have Maynard James Keenan and his dad teaching HS in Ludington. I would have rather known Maynard growing up. Scottville should put a Maynard monument up.
For all you younger metalheads who are claiming that "KISS is not metal".. Well.. OF COURSE KISS is not "metal". By today's standards.. of course!! But way, way before the metal of today... way before Metal was a "genre" or anyone even used the word "metal" to describe this type of music .. as it was evolving... in the early 70's, KISS formed as a band. And KISS were one of the heaviest bands in the U.S during the early 70's PERIOD!. "Heavy" in every way that you could be heavy according to the music of that time. Huge dual guitars, stacks of amps, using the biggest, loudest technology of the time. Along with one of the most prolific lead guitarists of that time! Yes, before Edward VH.. there was ACE FREHLEY. His riffs, especially on the early KISS albums, are legendary.. tasty, intricate, soaring, bluesy and Heavy!.. Also.. because Heavy Metal is not just about the sound of the music, it's also about the look, the feel, the "vibe" of a band, guess what? KISS was WAY ahead of ALL bands on this regard.. WAY ahead of all bands.. Yes.. ahead of Sabbath, Priest and Led Zeppelin. I mean, their look, was so extreme for the early 70's. No one had ever seen anything like that. Yes, they were inspired by the NY Dolls and Alice Cooper, but they took it so much further, wearing metal studs and leather YEARS before any other band started doing that. To add to KISS's heavy sound as a band, Paul and Gene's voices are low, husky, baritone voices and they sang in beatlesque harmony, along with Peter and the timbre of their rich, baritone voices was about the "heaviest" sounding vocals of that time on any music that I've ever heard from that era.. Basically, they made music that had BALLS.. The music was heavy, the look was heavy, the attitude was heavy. Everything about KISS was HEAVY.. way before "Heavy Metal" existed… But even from the beginning, KISS has always been a very eclectic band musically. Their style was never stuck to doing things just "one way".. KISS is truly a band that is way beyond the confines of genres.. Gene and Paul, before they formed KISS were in a band called "Wicked Lester".. that's a pretty dark name and vibe for the time.. google the cover of that album.. It's pretty dark.. almost reminds me of Sabbath's first album cover in a way.. but the music of Wicked Lester was not as heavy as what they decided to do with KISS. KISS's early discography, namely the first 3 albums, and more specifically, the 2nd album, "Hotter Than Hell" - very dark / spooky album cover for 1973-4, had a lot of dark/gloomy/sludgy/bluesy songs that are right in line with Sabbath, Priest and Zeppelin. Go look up these songs so you can hear it for yourself: Parasite, Goin Blind, Watchin You, Strange Ways, Black Diamond, 100,000 years, She. So, KISS was bringing this type of music, along with writing songs that were designed to be a bit Poppier and more old school "rock ' n' roll" sounding songs as well. Bottom line: Loudwire is correct. KISS contributed, just as much, if not more, to the evolution of Heavy Metal then any band from the United States or England. And don't forget this. There has never been a band that KISS can't completely blow off the stage live. No matter how "heavy metal" the warm up band may be. This is a fact.. I know it's hard to process for you who are the haters.. but it's just true.. It's like the sun coming up every day. It's an accepted fact.. And it's not because of bombs and fire... I've seen KISS with a lot of different warm up bands.. BIG bands like RUSH, Motely Crew, Queensryche, IRON MAIDEN.. Now.. how does KISS blow a band like RUSH off the stage?.. Or Queensryche? Well.. it couldn't be because of their ability to play their instruments. KISS never prioritized playing something complex on their instruments over the visual spectacle of the show. So, how does it happen? It simply happens because the visual spectacle of KISS is just so awe inspiring in and of itself.. without bombs or fire or blood.. Those are all just icing on the cake… just watching them do what they do on stage, in and of itself, is awe inspiring.. and it wouldn't be that way if it wasn't HEAVY and had the catchy, bluesy hooks and riffs that BUILT HEAVY METAL. Also, let me remind you that every metal band you've ever heard of, all the big ones, have probably opened for KISS at one time or another in the past 50 years. Yeah.. read it and weep...KISS has been touring for 50 years!!! and has a 24 studio album discography (bigger than most, if not all the big rock bands).. And KISS sold well over 100 million albums worldwide without ever having any significant radio hits other than Beth, Rock 'n' Roll all night and I was made for loving you. Three songs that don't even come close to the "normal" style KISS writes in. That fact, in and of itself, proves their heaviness.. Metallica has had more radio hits than KISS.. So, in that regard, you might as well lop KISS together with the heaviest, darkest, most tuned down, cookie monster vocals death, grind core metal that will also never get any radio play as well. But the Fact that KISS has been a band, touring and putting out albums for 50 years, and sold over 100 million albums, puts them in a league that is the "elite of the elite" bands of all time, just for their longevity alone. And for all of you who are crying about KISS being so greedy, realize that they were multi-millionaires by the year 1978. If they were doing this for the $ alone, they could have quit right after the Dynasty album in '79. No. These guys work their asses off! Their band and their music means a lot more to them then just using a gimmick to get rich. They are the all-time Champions of ROCK! And we should all bow down and give respect to them just for their example alone.. It's too bad that Loudwire only mentions KISS's stage show. KISS fans are not KISS fans because of exploding bombs, lights, fire and spitting blood at live concerts. Anyone can do that today. It's the MUSIC and the LOOK! Both are HEAVY! .. So.. is KISS a "heavy metal" band today? Can we classify their music today as being "Heavy Metal" music? No. Of course not. Heavy Metal has changed. It means something different than it did two, three, four decades ago. KISS is not heavy metal today. KISS doesn't have to or even want to be "heavy metal". KISS doesn't need to have "heavy metal" as a label connected to them in order to be successful or feel like they are in the "cool kids club". KISS are the outliers of ROCK. They are one of the few, elite bands that transcend all genre boundaries. Put simply, KISS is bigger than Heavy metal.. They are bigger than any musical genre.. They've always been able to write songs in whatever style suits them. And they choose a heavy, powerful, melodic style that usually centers around celebrating life and believing in yourself. It's a positive message! And for those of you who can't stand the "cringe" and can't wait for KISS to retire.. Get used to disappointment.. Whether you like it or not, KISS will still be around long after Gene and Paul hang up the 7" heels. KISS will probably still be a band long after the original 4 members have passed away… Truth be told… KISS will probably still be putting out albums and touring long after everyone reading this is dead and gone..

Kiss was my first huge love as a kid...I loved zeppelin too back then, but they seemed so serious or something...too grown up for an 8 yr old.....kiss had the sound, the looks, the crazy lyrics, the rebelliousness,...when you bought kiss alive 2, you got a huge full color booklet, sticker, a poster, temporary tattoos, an extra single album (the platinum album...whatever it was...) a crazy bunch of merch to buy....I got the kiss belt buckle even though I didn't own a belt! We all gathered around the tv...the kids, their parents, ...it was just a phenomenon...it's why I play guitar to this day....Ace !!!! The Best Quote I ever heard from them. (probably paraphrasing) Paul - "People accuse us of selling out. We did. We sold out every night!"
One could argue that they did sell out in the 80's and tried to be a metal hair band like Twisted Sister, Poison, Motley Crew
Like I haven’t heard that from all the sellouts.
Didn't Metallica say the exact same thing?

Because their album sound has been so lousy and thin through 70's. If you only focus on studio albums, their eponymous album (that came in 74, of all things) sounds nowhere near as innovative or stylistically important to hard rock and heavy as things british bands had done in previous 5 years.
Also to follow: Destroyer probably was the biggest influence in terms of metal, but again it came same year as Sad Wings of Destiny, Virgin Killer, Rainbow Rising etc...
Looking anachronistically, it makes them sound dated at the time.

“She’s been around, but she’s young and clean” (as well as the rest of Christine sixteen)
“So if you please, get on your knees. There are no bills, there are no fees”

KISS is cool. A lot of the metal bands we like so much look up to Kiss. Other than that, cool:).

@Tom Ffrench Half of the Metal scene from the mid 80s fits that description.

Oh yeah, there are also 5 other lines to the lyrics, but one of those lines is repeated also.
We all play first because we can, then because we love it, and last because inspiration keeps you going. KISS was a big part of me keeping going!
Back in the 70s when I was in third grade I bought the Kiss album to show and tell to show the whole classroom one of the first metal bands I listen to
My father took me to their "last" show
But I want to their last tour kiss alive 35
You don’t say which one?
I will never feel as confident as I do as much as I do when listening to KISS.
The album Animalize is worthy of respect.

Crap about them
Crap about them
Damn dude talk about brainwashed....human history? Are you serious?
@@needlesinmyeyes7272 Of course. There will be folks in the year 2873 talking about the rock bands of the XX century. They've changed the way of music forever.
Kiss sold their image more than anything, if they were the first to do anything and stand out from every other band in history and leavevtheir footprint behind then that's selling their image more than anybody else.
My mom's favorite band, KISS she went to 22 shows back in the 70s.
You're probably related to Gene 😬
KISS were more influential in the theatrics department than actual musical innovation. They started out as basically just a dirty, sleazy hard rock band with a unique image. Other than Frehley, they aren't really renowned as either masterful musicians or vocalists. Still, they've earned their place in the annals of rock and metal, even though they did sell out basically any time the musical landscape changed.
If you don't like KISS, you don't like kick-ass rock 'n' roll.
I was waiting for a Rammstein mention ... *That's* theatrics - while still making good music 🔥🔥🔥

The moment I heard Detroit Rock City on Paul Blart Mall Cop when I was a kid, I knew that song was special even though I didn’t understand anything then. It must have been very much the first moment I got into music.
YOU WANTED THE BEST!
YOU GOT THE BEST!
THE HOTTEST BAND IN THE LAND!
KISS!
can't be denied!
Except for every other band.
Far from the best but they definitely had huge influence I will give them that.
KISS ,my biggest obsession and they got me into metal. HEROES
ask a lot of rock bands who their favorite bands were growing up and most of them if not all will mention kiss
They are important! They influenced bands like Pantera. End of story. They are apart of rock history. Gotta pay respect
It's no dispute they were massively influential to the metal genre as a whole. Dont have to like them to admit that.
Bowie was a darling of the art school crowd, had no mass appeal until his post Stardust, " Let's Dance" era.
@@ersturdevant2831 He had some HITS prior to Let's Dance though, like Fame, Changes, Rebel Rebel, Space Oddity and Heros.
I didn't grow up when KISS was popular, but I love them anyways
I'm (only) 20 and I got into metal when I was 14 and I could not STAND KISS. I had a cringy elitist mindset when I was younger. I've recently come to love KISS and I don't really know why. There's just something about them. I know they don't have the greatest discography but man some of their early shit was just groundbreaking. Gene going on that talk show in the 70s in full Demon character, makeup and clothes, that was fucking METAL. you can hate the music but you gotta respect eBay KISS has done for rock and metal
I only have one thing to say 100 million albums sold.
Troy Hiett 100 million albums that suck.
Do you know who else has sold over 100 million albums? The Backstreet Boys.
Gabriel era Genesis was also another early example of a more theatre type of presentation, though not as big as Cooper.
proud soldier of KISS ARMY since 40 years.I just love their music
I love KISS, every song they do live sounds amazing
Anyone hating a band that they don't listen to is heavy-metal- nerdism & fanboyism of the highest kind & ought to be left in the school playground. Sadly, hating bands that aren't percieved to be "metal" seems to be part of the metal fraternity. Who cares about "true metal / false metal" bullshit.
I hate kiss because they were shit, not because the aren’t metal
No one Likes jaystation ahaha tell that to Dimmu Borgir’s Shagrath who is actually following them on IG. Awit.
Kiss has been my Favorite band for my entire life. I can understand why people hate them.
I knew it all along. One of the greatest bands of all time
Easily
John Robison, an autistic gentleman, is the guy that rigged up their guitars with smoke bombs.
You weren't even pooping diapers when I first hated kiss.
Kiss is and will always will be my favorite band. Even got my almost 5 year old nephew into kiss.

They were just so over the to...and then not much later they had a comic book and a tv movie!!! We all gathered around the tv...the kids, their parents, ...it was just a phenomenon...it's why I play guitar to this day....Ace !!!! I'll always love his playing...the influence of kiss for people around my age into heavy guitars is just undeniable...
