Harbor Freight 6.5hp Predator with Torque Converter Clutch and Electric Starter Installed - Finally!

  • As is common knowledge, the 212cc hemi Predator has a different taper on the crankshaft than the 1st and 3rd gen motors (non-hemi). The electric starter kits on the market have a flywheel set up for the old style only.
    ARC sells lightweight billet flywheels for the hemi, but without ring gears or charging magnets for about $100.
    The machine shops around here never got back to me about changing the taper on the new flywheel, so I had to figure out a work around.
    Done!
    For now....

    Hey everybody! Hi and thanks for watching all these vids I've put up here. I apologize for the lack of info on this series as far as all the minutia or step by step parts. Let me first say I'm by no means great at putting how-to's together, and I really could have done a better job. Also, even though I have moved on from this project a long time ago, I still get questions about the starter and flywheel issues with these motors. I am thinking of doing another motor just so I can do an in-depth tutorial on how to knock these out.
    That being said, please keep an eye out for one, as I'll probably be putting it all together in the very near future.
    If you haven't subscribed, please do, so you can get a notification when it's up here, as well as all the other random stuff I get myself into.

    If you bought this exact engine, check your compression. And read this that I discovered. I bought the same exact engine for a big 2 person go kart, It ran fine for 10 hours, then lost power. After checking the compression on it, I was sad to see it only had 52 lbs. I took off the head, piston, checked the valves, piston, rings, gasket, and all seemed ok. I took the vales out because one seemed a little harder to push through and sanded with 600 paper. After putting it all back together I reached the compression and still had only 52 lbs instead of the 120 (8.5) it is suppose to have. NOW THE SHOCKER!!! I also bought a brand mew 3200/40000 watts generator, predator with the same exact engine. I had only started it when I got it and used it for about 20 minutes. I took the spark plug off and checked the compression. I was shocked to see it had the same 53 lbs as the other one. So Im wondering, it Harbor freight selling this engines with only 52 compression and know it or that is going on. With this little compression the engine is only making about 3 HP or less. Id like to have people with this engine check their compression and see if they also have a weak 1/2 compression as I do. If so, then we are getting the shaft and been ripped of. But worse the engine is not performing the way it is advertised and is breaking the law. Both harbor freight and Predator for making them this way.

      If you mean to say the flywheel, it just installs and removes with basic tools. An impact gun may help.
      If you mean the torque converter, same process.

    Is the timing correct when you mount the Kohler Flywheel or do you need to adjust it?

    • @gierhedd75
      @gierhedd75  4 роки тому

      Hi. Thanks for watching! The timing on these motorists is predetermined by the position of the magnets mounted to the inner rim of the flywheel. They are pre-set at the factory, so no need for adjustment - which is always a plus.
      The other type of timing would be external points, that some other manufacturers use. Then your'e talking setting gap and such. Fortunately, these motors are the former design and not the latter.

      Hi. Thanks for watching. Haha lots of late nights on the internet.
      Your flywheel should already have magnets attached to it. I actually have extra flywheels laying around. If you're in the Delco/Philly area I'd gladly give them to you.
      Btw, you can swap out Kohler parts for most of the predator parts.

      @@gierhedd75 Thanks man, but I'm in lame Wisco haha. I'm trying to swap the magneto and flywheel from an old non hemi into a gen 2 hemi, and of course, the bore is different. The actual magneto fits fine, so there's got to be gen 2 models that output power, but ive never seen any. I think I'll check Kohler's.

    • @gierhedd75
      @gierhedd75  4 роки тому

      @@matthewmoneta7906 yeah the hemi has that weird taper at the end, which is such a pain. I went to a machine shop at one point to see if they could taper one for me; but they didn't seem to want to be bothered.
      Definitely check Ebay, and Kohler's website.
      Also, check some of the go kart websites.
      I'd also suggest - you haven't already, checking out redbeard's garage here on YT. He does a lot of stuff with the HF motors.
      Good luck!

    Any way you can show how you wired the electric starter to the hemi? Or a step by step on how you hooked everything up? Thank you in advance and thank you for this video.

      12 volt batter to big bolt on solenoid. Key start wire to small wire out of solenoid. We ran two wires from the positive on the battery, one direct to the starter and one to power the dashboard (lighting etc) on a Wheel Horse Commando 6.

      Dont forget to notch your cover if you're installing a starter.
