Along with remembering a beloved Uncle who passed, I want y’all to take a moment to appreciate a very small, but amazing detail within this animation: his shadow.
I remember meeting an older gentleman working at one of the VHS rental stores in my hometown. He was a photographer when he was younger. He showed off an album of celebrities to my mom and me. I had good times with the VHS stores. Beautiful job, CrafsMan. Rest in peace, Uncle Futon.

I adore Rolan's little arms. They move and gesture so expressively! My brother pointed out that Rolan's stack of DVDs includes My Neighbor Totoro and an old Buster Keaton film. Rolan is clearly a bug of culture.
The fact that this simple simple character has more plot intrigue that all modern cinema now-a-days goes to show you how much we need to protect the art. Huge smile on my face the entire time. I want more Roland.
The apple didn’t fall too far from the family tree… your uncle believed in his business and shared with you his wisdom and love of it, just as you do of your crafts and humor with us🙏🏻thank you for sharing❤️
I love this! how 3D the paper looks, with how smooth and detailed his movements are and how perfect the voice matches in character and animation is just wonderful :) it’s also just a sweet little story ❤ captured my heart
Love this little guy. I'd be so happy to see him again and again. I'm sure it took an amazing amount of time and effort to bring Rolan to life. So good.
I figure Uncle Futon for one of those VHS reminders that looked like a Corvette. This was so much fun, and I know how much work it took, but you can see the love in every frame!
@@TheCrafsMan I love to comment on your videos, Crafsman. You make me feel like we're old buddies. But then, heck, I guess we've been doing this for years now, so... Well, anyway, I don't suppose this return to animation means we might get to see Mr Eugene again sometime? Sure do miss him.
I'm sure Uncle Futon is enjoying the most amazing VHS library in the sky right now! With all the time for napping that he pleases. Be well Mr. Crafsman, losing loved ones is one of the hardest parts of living.
OH MAN!!!!! :D "That good ol' days!" :) There was one of these a few miles outside the community where I grew up. We called it "The Red Brick Store", and it was a single pump gas station with cold drinks, snacks, and approximately 37 VHS tapes to select from. :)
My first experience with the CM… was him teaching in one of his vidos, how to transfer a colorful bird to a piece of wood using a laser printer and mailing labels. Your leaps and bounds are so commendable my friend! You continue to strive for excellence and achieve it in flying colors!! I even used my VHS player as a means of doing analog music recording to tape. Sorta a poor man’s reel to reel studio tape machine. I’m sorry your uncle has gone on ahead. Thankful that his imparted wisdom has surfaced through your art and character. Keep on my friend * ✊🏻♥️
That was SO perfect, Crafsman!! The shadow when he was in front of the tv was beautiful!! Great job!! Not to mention the perfect mouth articulating. SO GORGEOUS TO WATCH!!
This reminds me so much of Don Hertzfeld's stuff, that simple style of art but with emotive movements and expressions, it's weirdly cosy... I love all of this person's stuff, I'm glad I accidentally found it
RIP to your uncle. This gave me nostalgia and longing for something I’ve never experienced, you did so well with the storytelling. It made me wish I’d grown up knowing extended family. To have little stories like this to look back on.
Condolences to Uncle Futon, and long live VHS. I grew up at the tail end of it, with DVD and Blu-Ray becoming standard formats before I was in high school, but now I love collecting VHS tapes as a hobby. I have 3 copies of Stargate on VHS.
Coming back to this video after watching your video on Vocalsynth makes me appreciate this way more. All those little things sure do add up and creates a beautiful little piece of video.
Sorry buddy. I hear we all deal with loss in unique ways. This is comforting and inspiring. I can imagine this will be a source of warmth for you and all of us now and probably again.
"He was really just after that 50-cent rewind fee" joke really got me laughing. Your uncle sounds like a very fun person to hang around with. Hopefully, he has all of the VHS tapes he could ever want and a nice futon for naps now.
Thank you so much, my friend! P.S. Uncle T-Nu gonna get a mention in the "how to" video. I used that bass-boost suggestion when I did the worldizing. :) Not sure if I did it justice, but there is a major difference between the dry/original vs. mixed with the audio played in the room. I'm just not sure if I pushed it as much as I could have (or if I left the dry signal too hot). Anyway, I do like how the little sibillances (? or whatever the "s" sounds are called) and vocal details are allowed to carry and reflect within the room.
@@TheCrafsMan Thanks so much. It sounds good, very subtle, but sometimes the best effects are the ones that you don't hear as an effect. This sounded very natural to me. Nice job! : )
Sorry to Hear of Your Loss! Your Tribute to him shows his knowledge transcended onto you his Jedi Apprentice! The torch is now passed on to you and your Crafnation Jedi Mastery! 🙌🏼🙏🏼♥️
As much as I love the crafting videos on your channel, I hope you don't give up on animation entirely just because of a few people on UA-cam. Your animation videos are just as informative and entertaining as your DIY videos, and you should continue pursuing that passion regardless of some strangers on the internet or a hostile algorithm.
Maybe it's just where and when I grew up, but when I think about mom and pop (and uncle) vhs rental stores I can smell a cigarette that was always burning up front while he sat and listened to the radio.
Medical tape and sports tape too. Prevents injuries, holds broke limbs while they heal, closes open wounds so they can heal, bandages without stickiness could be considered tape too, like ACE bandages Sorry about your uncle, and the decline of kindness
I feel that people have lost their ability to be patient since the decline of the VHS. Safe travels to your uncle Crafsman, may he find the softest futon to repose on.
I grew up when tapes were on the way out too, I'm 28 but since we were poor I watched VHS tapes until I was about 15, it's been odd watching video fade from VHS to DVD to Blu-Ray and now Streaming is the standard. I do have a bit of nostalgia for tapes the way they degraded over time leaving artifacts on tapes or permanent glitches in the audio and visuals that just got worse with time and the noise of it all, the whine of rewinding a tape or the audio quickly playing in reverse on an older player, the clicking and clacking of pulling out a tape because you'll be away from the TV to do a chore or to watch a show on TV, the dreadful sound of accidentally dropping a tape and hearing it shatter because it's an older tape and it's out of print or WORSE it's an irreplaceable home video, the sound of tapes shuffling around as you dig through them in a box or drawer to find the right one. Nostalgia is odd, I remember I used to get annoyed when tapes would degrade or if my sister left a tape paused on the TV for too long because it would burn the image into the screen, but now that I'm older idk it reminds me of days past. It's important to enjoy the present and our issues with it, because tomorrow is always coming to change everything we know and turn it into what we knew.
This is just so visually stunning! I can tell you put so much work into just this little clip. I love how effortlessly you fit the stop motion character into real scenes and backgrounds. I cannot wait to see what else you do with animation!!!
We like that idea! Sammi, please email me (thecrafsman@gmail.com) I'll talk to my wife about maybe having some stickers made, and if we do I want to be sure you are compensated! Thank you for watching, and for the very neat idea!

Wonderful work. Beautiful animation and sweet storytelling. RIP to your uncle Crafsman.

Rolan, I have two VHS recorder/players and both are having a moment of silence for your uncle.
Watching this was well worth the laser risk!
👍 I’ve come to realize (and enjoy) that sometimes you have to rewatch to catch everything CrafsMan puts into his work. Literally a moving I Spy book.
That was beautiful.
Thanks so much, my friend.
Laser risk... haha! bless your uncle. He sounded like a great guy.

Please be kind and rewind.....good times. I do like how he decided the movie section.
This is award level stuff! Puts me in mind of the best Ardman animation from the late 80s early 90's (Creature Comforts/ War Story etc.)
"That's the risk you take every time there's a laser involved."
Your uncle sounds like quite the character! What a charming story. So good to have such memories.

I still remember having a dedicated rewinder. good ol' times.
I almost forgot about those rewind fees! May your uncle RIP.
Brilliant work, Crafsman! Rolan is a treasure.

The gas station in town had VHS rentals way back when. You'd take a laminated picture of the box art to the counter and they'd hand you the cassette.

Beautiful animation, and a lovely tale. And as someone who still watches VHS tapes, uncle Futon was very correct about all of it, lol.
Mine all got warped and skippy from over-use :(
Fun as they may have been, it is not a format known for its robustness or longevity.
