Clean and Reseal Our Cedar Deck - Second Coat a Year Later

  • A year after our new cedar deck was build and sealed with an oil-based sealer, Ready Seal 112 Natural Cedar Exterior Wood Stain and Sealer, the weather took a toll on the wood deck appearance. This video documents the process and the amazing results!
    Background: We decided to apply an oil-based natural cedar color sealer to our new cedar deck to preserve the beautiful color of the cedar wood. After searching the Web, I identified a highly rated product: Ready Seal 112 Natural Cedar Exterior Wood Stain and Sealer. I ordered a 1-gallon can of this sealer along with a 5” brush Linzer through Amazon.com. The Ready Sealer was easy to apply by hand using the 5” brush and a small 1” brush for the tight spots. It absorbed quickly into the wood and there were no visual overlap lines, even on the few boards that were in the direct sun during application. Unlike water-based sealers that I have used on wood decks in the past, I felt no urgency in applying this sealer to avoid darker and lighter areas and overlap lines. Best of all, one gallon of Ready Seal covered the entire 12’ x 8’ deck, the sides and full-length steps in a single application. And there is still about half a gallon of sealer left in the can, just enough for a second coat next summer. I am very pleased with the results!

Was thinking of going solid for sun exposure concerns but now thinking of trying Ready Seal. Can we apply two coats in one day? Thanks!

    Several years ago I used a product called TWP 100 on a yellow pine PT deck. I waited 1 year after installation. Then I bleached it with Olympic deck cleaner and water. Then I applied 2 coats of the oil based stain, the second coat applied while the first was still wet. Worked beautifully. Might be worth investigating.

    Nice follow-up. Thx for sharing that. I just stained an Ipe (ironwood) deck last week with Ready Seal (natural-light oak). Ipe is extremely dense and will only absorb a little oil, so I had to put it on thin, using a square short bristled nylon applicator and a roller pan. I had done the posts and rails with a glove/mitt and I liked that because I could really spread it out thin with no excess, and it dried really fast. The square pad left a bit more oil on the decking than I wanted. On the first section I did nothing extra. On the third section I immediately wiped over it with a microfibre towel to take off excess, and it dried quickly. The next day the decking was still oily in places on the first section, so following Company instructions I wiped it down with a microfibre and thinner. I used the three or four towels for the 611 square foot deck. It dried nicely. Later that day it rained and when I got back home the following night there was a foot of snow on it. After it melted, the stain looked great, water was beading up on the wood. I look forward to just doing the Clorox wash and rinse next year, followed by one coat of ready Seal again. I only used 1.25 gallons so far, as Ipe absorbs very little.

My unsolicited recommendation is to a) use pump sprayer b) apply more liberally and you should be able to go 2-3 years between applications and it will "hold up" better.

      He did a nice detailed job for a homeowner, but he’s not using enough material for lasting performance. That’s probably why there’s such noticeable wear. On the initial application, it’s better to use two light coats to get enough material to soak in. A stain pad screwed onto a pole would also be way easier on the back and speed things up about 4x.

    Was your deck new when you put the first coat on? How well has your second coat held up in the areas where you get full sun? I have a pressure-treated deck that’s now a year old and it’s time to put the first stain or sealer on. I’d like to get it right the first time with a product that will give good results for up to a year in full sun. I’m in southeast Michigan so temperatures are generally in the 80’s during the day in summer months.

    • @randallwingett
      @randallwingett  2 роки тому

      Good questions! Yes, my cedar deck was new when I applied the first coat of oil-based sealer. It is unusual that decking boards are pressure treated. The deck structure (posts and joists) are often pressure treated. Anyway, full sun was not my situation. This deck is on the north side of our house. All I can tell you is that were I to do this again, I would use composite decking and not cedar boards. I am not going to reseal the deck boards again because it wears off in a year’s time. Natural weathered cedar it shall be. Live and learn!

    • @1funcar
      @1funcar 2 роки тому

      @@randallwingett Thanks for the quick reply. Our deck is not cedar, hence it is pressure treated. I don’t really mind doing it every year since that’s what we were doing with our old deck. Every year for 27 years (except for two times) and that’s probably why it lasted so long. The boards weren’t in terrible condition but we wanted a newer look and replaced the top and side boards.

    • @randallwingett
      @randallwingett  2 роки тому +1

      I’d suggest doing more research. I used the same oil-based product, Ready Seal, on two cedar fences with pressure treated (fir or pine) posts. It is holding up much better than this deck. If it were me, I’d use an oil-based sealer. Latex sealers don’t soak in to the wood fibers and you end up scraping and sanding old decks before resealing. I have experience with this on a very large deck. Good luck!
