Days Like These !

- This is a video I have wanted to do for a while now that shows when things go well you get near perfect days for steam tours but when things go wrong they do just that !Took the title from a Matt Monroe song that came on as I got back in the car one day after things had gone wrong big time so it made me laugh out loud !
Thank you for being out in the elements for all those miserable times. The video is great and the challenges only make for a better story! My line is "whatever happens, happens". It's all part of documenting our railway world. Thank you, and keep 'em coming. ;-)
Thanks James, trials and tribulations of our hobby I suppose 🤔
Ten plus minutes of pure heaven. Thank you.
Thanks Nigel, pleased you enjoyed the video. Steve
Great shots and very funny too. Particularly liked all the lambs determined to compete for noise with a full size steam engine! And very atmospheric too, a reminder that trains have always operated in all weathers!
Thanks Ian, pleased you enjoyed it and sorry for the late response.
The shots in the snow are fab! 7:41 especially! Well done to you for coping with the heavy snow, unpleasant but worth it! Steam locos + Snow just look so provocative and romantic!
Questi giorni quando vieni il belle sole
Thanks Finlay , must admit I do like the snow when there’s some around especially if a steam tour is running 👍
I loved this video. It shows the frustrations caused by bad weather and unwanted trains - but there are some spectacular clips. Thank for posting it.
Thanks Rod , all in a days filming I suppose when things go wrong 👍
I love all your snow shots. The ones in the near blizzard and the double header stick out for me as being just about perfect.
Thanks for the kind comment and I must say I do like it when there’s snow around when the steam tours run 👍
I'm so glad there's mad people like you who go out in a freezing blizzard, so people like me can sit at home in the warm and say, "Oh my." Cheers
Thanks Greg , don’t mind going out in all weather to be honest as sometimes it pays off . Sorry for the late response. Regards Steve
Just fabulous Steve, it's amazing how the modern day stuff just got out of the way, to give you a glimpse, so no shot was totally ruined!
Thanks Andy , yes I was fortunate as like you say the loco still appeared in the end !
There is nothing wrong with this video, it is good to see some of the other trains on the lines, annoying when they block a good shot though, I really like it,even the oopsie at the end.
Thanks Ken , thought I’d add the last shot as its probably something lots of people do at some time.
@@TheStephengthompson Yes, I've done that on my videos too many times! Complements to you on the videos, though. Very enjoyable.
Thanks Martin, my other mistakes in the past are thinking I’ve pressed record when I haven’t ☹️
@@TheStephengthompson must say, you set the bar so extremely high that these justify being called bad shots. To anyone else they are perfectly fine-especially the snow ones
that whiteout shot in the snow, shows scenes that are not generally recorded. steam crews working in atrocious weather conditions every winter up north. it was my favourite clip of the whole video. brrrrrrrr, well done for braving the conditions to get it
Thanks for the kind comments and the blizzard was starting to worry me about the drive home but it was safe thankfully.
Definitely portrayed the ups and downs in the life of a steam railway cameraman. Awesome film Steve, well done 🤓🤓💙💙
Thanks Anthony, very sorry for the late response.
Beautiful trains beautiful scenery thank you very much
My pleasure Jim 👍
Brilliant! You deserve a medal for being out in the snow. One of the most epic atmospheric offerings I have seen.
Thanks Jobn , snow and steam are just brilliant in my eyes 👍
Brilliant! Love the sound effects at 6:30. Made my day. Thank you!
Thanks Chris, the sheep that day were particularly loud 😂
That scene with the locomotive and train in driving snow is fantastic. According to authorities the video was discovered in a camera next to railway during the spring thaw. Initial reports indicated that the videographer had not been found and it was believed that he likely succumbed to exposure and famished animals coming out of winter drug the body off. However, later he was found to be in a psychiatric ward of a hospital having lost his nose, several fingers and toes from frostbite, and repeating over and over again, "Where is that damn train?"
Thanks Lewis , I loved your description as it was superb 👍
Wonderful stuff, thanks Steve... I think there's quite a bit of modesty in there too, because in most cases you (apparently!) calmly rescued the situation. Your sharing this and giving so much pleasure is greatly appreciated. Kind regards, Bob.
Thanks Bob, all part of our hobby I suppose 👍
Bring s back lovely memories of going on the Flying Scotsman not once but two times in a year from York to Carlisle , and many more .
Thanks Graham, can’t beat a ride behind steam especially over Shap 👍
Well done! I particularly liked the views in the snow and inclement weather that enhances the billowing clouds of smoke and steam.
Thanks Von , steam and snow always work well so I hope for more this next few weeks 👍
A great video, some superb shots. I would be quite happy if all my days were like these.
Thanks for the kind comment and all part of a hobby I suppose 👍
That clip of the A4 in the snow is superb - the snow falling is a great addition and brings home how hard the loco is working to battle the gradient.
Thanks for the kind comment and I must admit the day the A4 ran I was lucky as the snow was coming from behind the camera and not at the lens 👍
Unbelievable quality shots , brilliant work .
Thanks Kenneth , much appreciated comment and I'm glad you liked the action .
On days like these we can rely on the intrepid Mr Thompson to be out there capturing the action. Great stuff in all weathers Steve
Thanks Austin, fair or fowl you know I’ll be out and about 👍
Got to love those UK steamers. Also nothing nicer than steamers in the snow. Great video.
Thanks for the kind words and your so right about steam in the snow 👍
Excellent film showing steam specials and how much luck you really need . Well done Steve. Extremely well put together 😁😁
Thanks Anthony, made one mistake in the edit as I missed a good shot out and put two bowl shots one after another.
The section from 7:39 through 7:51 is just amazing. It's like an old painting come to life. Beautiful!
Thanks for the kind comment and it was pretty wild in the snow that day. Steve
The Landscape WOW. Your lucky. And HOW meny passing trains with a Great Shot at the End. Well Done.
Thanks Stephen, must admit I’m lucky with the amount of tours around my area 👍
You are a true hero, going out in those conditions. I hope you were ok after the last clip!
Thanks Martin, ha ha yes I forgot to switch the camera off 😂
Fantastic stuff! Nothing like the meeting of steam and ice cold air!
Thanks Stewart , nothing better than a cold day for superb exhaust shots . Steve
Well... in amongst those shots that would definitely pissed you off there are some of the greatest shots I've ever seen! Opening one and the two in the now, for starters! Excellent!
Thanks John , I got a near identical shot at the 1st location a couple of years later again double headed 👍
Brilliant, Steve! Even when bowled you come out smiling!
Thanks Alan, I suppose the bowl shots weren’t that bad as I still managed to see the engine in the end 👍
Yes, it's difficult to know whether to bemoan your bad luck and rejoice at your good luck!
Love these videos of the steam engines. Good Quality .Job well done.
Thanks Harry, pleased you enjoyed the video. 👍
Some stunning shots there, especially those in the snow. Love the end too! Done that myself sooo many times. Subscribed.
Thanks for the kind comment and it's all part of our hobby I suppose .
Fabulous. Your dedication is well and truly proven. My favourite is the loud sheep at 6:30.
Thanks for the kind comment and the sheep were noisy that day 😂
Very good video! At 7.45 it reminds me at a painting of William Turner, when the locomotive is driving along the coast, surrounded by steam and fog.
Thanks for the kind comment and it was pretty wild in the snow storm at 7-45 👍
There are a lot of really great shots here. But that opening sequence is superb !
Thanks Dermot , must admit the 1st shot was amazing that day .
Absolutely stunning. Well done!
Thanks for the very kind comment as it’s much appreciated 😊
It's really nice to see the both forms of locomotion working along side each other, isn't it? You do good work sir!
Thanks foe the very kind comments as they are much appreciated . Regards Steve
Fantastic videos. When I was a young lad there was only cine film. The quality is amazing.
Thanks Peter, surprisingly Cine was pretty good but today’s camera quality is amazing but I do use external mics in Rode wind Blimps hence decent sound on very windy days 👍
I have just picked this compilation up and i think it is brilliant. i particularly liked the Jubilee in a snow storm - full marks for endurance. You seem to be very lucky or unlucky with trains passing on the inside of your filming though but really good thought.
Thanks Bill , I suppose you run the risk of getting bowled being on the opposite side to the train but not often it happens lol . Sorry for the late response. Regards Steve
heh! I thought you worked long and hard to GET the interplay between the steam and diesel! Not a ruined shot in the bunch! All very beautiful. And that opening long shot of the steam in air so cold it looks like the steam is turning solid in the air!! wonderful. Thanks!
Thanks Charles , can’t beat steam tours in the snow 👍
Some fantastic footage especially the opening shots. Thanks for posting.
Thanks Ian , I actually did the same 1st shot a year later with two 5s and the conditions were exactly the same with a near identical shot 👍
Very enjoyable and congratulations on your fortitude in sub zero temperatures
Thanks Martin, don’t mind the cold if it gets me shots like these I must admit 👍
Great video, warts and all lol. Love the wintery scenes, these must go back a few years, we hav'nt had snow in ages.
Thanks Stuart, most of the snow shots were a while back but the blizzard shot near Kirkby Stephen was just last year 👍
Great video, thanks for sharing! Interesting- to my American ears, the 3 cylinder locomotives always sound like they're moving faster than they actually are.
Thanks Mark , must admit I do like the sound the three cylinder locos make 👍
Great videos and some in awful weather but also how unlucky can a man be for being bowled lol
Thanks Steve , I forgot to put in the shot of 35018 at Coniston cold from the GB tour last year as a freight bowled me on that day an all 😂
Lovely compilation Steve. And the funny thing is, although some may not have been the shot you intended, they still worked. What I want to know is what you did to upset Freightliner! lol
Thanks Bob, I seem to attract the pesky freightliners lol 😂
I could go to sleep listening to this!
Thanks for that and I know what you mean 👍
An interesting video Steve. That what makes our hobby enjoyable always trying the get that ultimate shot. When things don’t turn out the way we hope for, we go out and see if the next is better. Kind regards C&A
Thanks C&A, trials and tribulations of our hobby I suppose 😂
what memories this brings to me as a 5 year old child, with Mom in her car........down by the tunnel>>>>>
Thanks Harold , pleased it brought back fond memories 👍
A superb example of what we go through in capturing these trains Steve, and as clearly shown in this video, I must thank you for enduring some atrocious weather to capture this stunning footage. Being bowled is a big risk, so a good idea not to have a running line between you and a train, unless it's absolutely necessary.
Thanks Bob , must admit I do think about lineside positions now to save being bowled.
Yeah unlucky but i love your videos ! Where was this filmed with soo much snow ? My brother who works on the platforms at Oxford train station on the GWR first group network tells me often the signallers at the station , (which may now have disappeared) deliberately let opposite running trains through the station to bowl or photo bomb out the steam special from opposite line viewers ! Lol.
Thanks Tim , most of the snow shots were on the Settle & Carlisle line and the West Coast mainline at Shap summit .
Very nice comp, especially the snow scenes thanks :)
Thanks Alan , must admit I do like the shots when there’s snow around 👍
I think most of us at one time or another have had days like that... Thanks for having the courage to share, not many would.
Thanks Andy , a friend of mine did a similar video a few years ago so it’s been on the burner for a while now 👍
Perfect shots..Many thanks from Germany !
Thanks for the kind comment and sorry for the late response.
Thanks for the kind comment and very sorry for the late response.
I know alot of people would like to hate on these machines because of all that black smoke, but most don't realize that most of the solid particulates in that smoke will settle back down to the ground and the carbon will become one with the earth again.
Thanks for the kind comment as it’s much appreciated 👍
Well, unless you live in the vicinity of a rail road with 100+ trains a day, and the soot and dust settles on your house, and becomes one with your garden, your laundry, and your lung.
Or worse in an industrial center with a lot smoke stacks in addition to multiple rail lines.
It isn't much about the actual particles. Black smoke on a Steam Engine means that the crew is burning the fuel inefficiently.
@@scythesasin4181 I dunno if you're aware, but *all* coal-fired steam engines belch out black smoke. It's the nature of the beast. Don't wax all intellectual on us when it's clear that you don't know what you're talking about.
With internal combustion engines, black smoke means you're not burning all your fuel, but with coal, black smoke just tells you that it is lit.
@@kaihorstmann2783 There's a rail line right behind my back-yard, and I live about a click away from a huge GM plant (Oshawa, Ontario). The only thing that really bugs me about it is the noise and the fact that the prick-bastards only seem to come around at 03:00 in the morning.
Very, very beautiful video, Steve, despite all his crossings and other little problems in shooting. Philippe
Thanks Philippe, all part of our hobby I suppose 👍
Absolutely nothing wrong with any of these. The whiteout clip was particularly evocative!
Thanks John, must admit snow is superb when steam is running 👍
The sheep cracked me up lol, louder than a steam engine!!
Thanks James , yes it was quite funny as the farmer was coming to feed them 😂
I would be happy to have bad days like that. Some absolutely stunning snow shots. So you got photobombed by some modern trains. It happens. Your work and framing is excellent.
Thanks for the kind comments plus I must admit I do like filming when there’s snow around 👍
I don't know if it's just the camera angle, but the gradients in Cumbria seem to be at the top limit (and are not always tackled with "double headers")
Thanks for the kind comments . Most gradients are either 1in 75 or 1 in 100 .
@@TheStephengthompson ah, must be the camera angle then.... thanks...great videos by the way....
Great work and awesome pictures !
Thanks for sharing.
Greetings from Cologne.
Thanks Markus , pleased you enjoyed it 👍
Absolutely wonderful shots.
Thanks Norbert, pleased you enjoyed it.
Many thanks for braving the cold ( and the loco crews ! ) for bringing us such a great video Shame the " Sheds" got in the way but they are doing a vital job and keeping the railways alive , nice to have light hearted entertainment as well very good well done !
Grahams G1 Train
Great shots...I know where it wasn't filmed....California...LOL
I'm 67 and have traveled by steam for real in the 50-60's...It was just a different time then...
You can't get me on a plane...I'll take the Rail any day and enjoy my trip...
Thanks Robert , must admit we are so lucky to see so many steam tours in this day and age 👍
So this would be a good shot vs. bad shot edit ? They all rate 1st class+++ with me, another train adds extra 'dynamics' (for want of better words) to the scene ! And the shot starting at 07:40 is simply incredible, guess I'm not the only one thinking of the famous painting now. Thank You !
Thanks Leo , you’re bang on with your assumption 👍The shot at 7-40 was only possible to do by placing the camera against the high stone wall hence no snow on the lens thankfully. Steve
I suppose this is in Britain somewhere? It's the most breathtaking footage I've ever seen of steam trains.
Looking through the comments I was astonished that nobody seems to have noticed the sasquatch in the beginning - although they probably go by another name in Britain? It's quite noticeable, moving with an incredibly gaining walk on the crest to the left of the railway, standing at least 10 feet tall...
It's know as the random old git here.
Tom Morrison 👍🏼 😂
Thanks Hallands , it was just a chap with a still camera lol
TheStephengthompson yeah, but don't tell anyone..
That's Donald Trump's looking for more fake news😂
great video bro
Thanks for the kind comment 👍😊
Love it when it "explodes" under the bridge.
Nothing better than steam in the snow .
I dont care Stephen, you can not take away the majesticnenses, (If thats a word ) from any steam locomotive.Whatever the situation !!!!!! PS i love your work ! :)
Thanks for the kind comments as they are much appreciated. Regards Steve
Majesty
Thanks Bruce , much appreciated.
Nothing wrong with half these clips. Those snowy shots I'd love to venture out for.
Thanks Kyle, must admit I do like filming when there is snow around.
Oh! Stephen, priceless! How could you have known about the big, grey caterpillar thing that emerged from bottom right? ....and the Virgin thing, and, all the other little odd things. Yessss I smiled too,and I'll bet that ,anyone who has held a video camera,or,phone these days is guilty of leaving it switched on,and, walking off. It's all balanced by the magnificent plume at the beginning, even with the lone person who looks to be trying to hide in the hedge briefly...giggle,giggle snicker... It's still you, and,it's still GREAT!
Thanks Allison, in the end I suppose the freight trains did get out of the way . Must admit the first shot is one that stands out for me .
@@TheStephengthompson Oh! Yeah, the grey caterpillar? The magnificent plume at very first is what absolutely grabs me. Who was that figure???LOL
The figure was a cameraman I think 🤔
Your clips seemed to show your usual impeccable choice of location and quality of cam work Steve, so I was expecting to see all clips with crappy bowlage by diesels. However I was pleasantly surprised to view many clips with no bowlage, although some others were spoiled by drifting steam, or just being in the wrong position to avoid steam and rain on the lens.
Your last clip reminded me of a similar mishap I had a few years back when I lost my footing approaching the end of a clip. I fell backwards on to soft grass with my cam, tripod and legs up in the air pointing skywards in the pouring sleety snow! Your clip recalled that to me with much hilarity! I suspect though that the end of your clip was caused by forgetting to switch off the cam, which was it?
One question I have is at about 7.00 the Duchess was pounding on what looked like the CME, and it passed a trailing line coming from its left. Do you know what the branch is for?
Thanks for another enjoyable video. Ken
Ken Browne I would say that’s the trailing connection for the Arcow Quarry between Helwith Bridge and Horton in Ribblesdale station.
Thanks Ken , you’re bang on with me forgetting to switch off the camera . The spur is at Helwith Bridge and it goes into the quarry hence it cuts down on wagons running back and forth. Regards Steve
Awesome video, Stephen - WELL DONE!
Thanks David, my pleasure and glad you enjoyed it.
What's wrong with that? 7'17 - 7'37 is a perfect example of the use of the 'Harrington hump'! All joking aside, that has to be the best collection of steam railway photography I've seen. I grew up with scenes like that day in, day out. I didn't like the cold days then either, despite the so-called 'resilience of youth'. Ah, the 'Italian Job'. Like steam locomotives, they don't make 'em like that nowadays - at least not quickly! I wish you more successful and not so successful photography outings.
Thanks Robbie , pleased you enjoyed the video 👍
It's all good. Superb effort!
Thanks Jon , pleased you enjoyed the video. Steve
Steam n' snow - perfect.
Thanks Jonathan, glad you enjoyed the show 👍
Another cracking upload. 😊
Thanks Christopher , pleased you enjoyed the video. Sorry for the late response. Regards Steve
Excellent,thanks, you score a 10
Thanks for that and ten will do for me 👍
Many of these shots are great, especially the 2 Black 5s at Salterwath, very dramatic. You do take a chance of getting blocked if you decide to go the wrong side of the line! Surely some of these shots are rescueable if you put them through Premier or similar?
Thanks Colin, very true about being that side but I prefer a more side on shot sometimes so it has the risk factor. I could have used my editing software to change things but decided to leave it warts and all 👍
I enjoyed this very much...warts and all!
Thanks Chris , glad you enjoyed the show.
Some excellent shots there , thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the kind comment as it’s much appreciated 👍
Superb video, i can't see any fault with it, you may have had as senior moment at the end, but this happens to all of us
Thanks John , thought I’d add the last shot as we’ve all done something along those lines.
Extremely relaxing clips x
Thanks for the kind comment as it’s much appreciated 👍
@@TheStephengthompson You are more than welcome
Stunning. Thank you.
My pleasure and I’m pleased you enjoyed it 👍
Superb shots. Maybe the freight trains could of done with having one wagon less on them, but still mostly cleared just in time :)
Thanks for the kind comments and the closest I came to seeing nothing was the Duchess at Scout Green 🤔
Nice idea to choose clips that work perfectly and those that were less so. That opening one really is a stunner. Actually with 1:30 and 3:00, I suppose you were lucky really in that the intruding freights JUST got out of the way just in the nick of time.
But 5:45 surely anyone would have to laugh. :D
Thanks Andrei, like you say the freight cleared just in time in most shots thankfully.
That first video at Shap is wonderful!
Thanks Zac , it was a wow moment I must admit.
Hi Steve, great stuff, liked the Blizzard shot, Best Wishes for 2019..Dave
Thanks Dave , nothing like a blizzard to film steam in lol .
Cheers Steve, Very good , Thanks for reply ...Dave
Now that's what you call STEAM.
Thanks Lea, the first shot was one of those wow moments. 👍
I didn't see a thing wrong with this video - it was awesome
Thanks Bob , pleased you enjoyed the video 👍
Wow very good, specially the first clip.
Thanks Simon, the first shot is one of my favourites I must admit.
Glorious.
Do you have anymore videos of your layout or plan on posting any in the future
Thanks for the kind comment but sadly not as the layout has been taken apart and sold on sadly but I kept the two cranes 👍
Views of the European Country Side is absolutely Beautiful.
Thanks Harry, we are lucky in Northern England with such good landscapes to film in .
LOL. When Americans ask where I'm from and I say England, they nearly always say "I'm thinking of visiting Europe soon"...……
Oh how I miss the golden age of steam trains in our world
Thanks for the kind comment and we are so lucky to have plenty of steam tours every year where I live 👍
Excellent!
Thanks Nigel, pleased you enjoyed the video 👍
Opening few baa's of Pink Floyd's 'sheep' at 6.30.
I like that yes the sheep were a tad loud !
I loved it!
A lot of these shots almost look like they're from the 1960s! (the LMS routes were first electrified then), while others look like they could've been filmed any time after that!
Thanks for the kind comments and the beauty is the Settle & Carlisle has no poles or wires yet thankfully. Steve
Hello Mr. Thompson, a question please: are those steam trains in regular service with you up there or are these just special historical theme tours on sundays only for example?
They are all steam specials. However, in the UK they are so popular that there are sometimes up to four steam specials running somewhere on the mainline each day in the summer.
Great videos. Love the Shap shot!
Thanks John , the Shap shot was something else I must admit as I couldn’t believe what was happening in front of me that day.
1.10 Love how the smoke hangs in the air like a huge pipe-cleaner.
Must admit the conditions were perfect for that 1st shot .
