The main problem is that Susanna is a tragic character. She is flawed and human. She needed an older woman in her life for guidance, a motherly figure that would have helped her navagate her feelings to avoid all the issues actually the 2 brothers created dor her.
My favorite movie. Once a year, when the days are short and cold, I take out this movie and watch it again. When it came out I had three girl friends and took each to the cinema to watch it, separately of course. From my perspective it is a masterpiece.
This is one of the best movies ever made. It's great BECAUSE it does not have a happy ending which reflects life most of the time. Life does not always turn out the way we want it to and sometimes it's good to see that reflected in a movie instead of the unrealistic Hollywood happy ending we see most of the time. This is a beautiful movie and I don't understand how it is so underrated.
the music, the actors, the cinematography, what a gorgeous piece of cinema. I have always loved this film and as a guy, I was kind of envious that Tristan is who all the girls wanted, no doubt. But hey, He has it. There something about this film that just gives a little bit of dreaming and hope of a place to live that is beautiful and tragic, That we just dont go into our cars everyday and drive down ugly roads to go to an ugly building for 8 hours and go home and thats that. There has to be a dream out there and this movie does that for me. Awesome!

I never saw any chemistry between Susannah and Samuel. He seemed younger as more naive than she was. While Alfred did not have Tristan’s irresistible magnetism, he was a decent man who in the end saved his father and brother.

Pour moi c'est le meilleur film jamais réalisé, l'histoire sublime, Brad merveilleux, Susannah touchante au point de pleurer chaque fois à la scène de la prison, les autres acteurs sont bons, je haie Alfred, la musique donne au film une dimension ultime, les décors sont magnifiques, il est regrettable que certaines scènes ait été coupées au montage car elles expliquent mieux le fait que Tristan soit aussi perturbé et de belles scènes très tendres entre Tristan et Susannah pendant la fameuse promenade reprochée par Alfred et notamment une vers la fin ou ils se revoient ce qui fait comprendre pourquoi elle décide de se tuer, quelle histoire ! se tuer par amour ! The question I wonder, and I have watched this movie several times, did Tristan ever really love Susan? I think Tristan did love Susanna but felt such guilt over Samuel's death that he just could not let himself be happy with the women Samuel was to marry. The fact that Albert accused Tristan of wanting Samuel out of the way so he could be with her was the final nail in the coffin of that romance. Very sad - as I don't think Susannah would have married Samuel in the end..as she fell in love with Tristan as soon as she laid eyes on him. Had they not left for war, Susanna would have left the house and the relationship with Samuel. She knew how she felt about Tristan and that her relationship with Samuel had no hope of surviving it.
Thats where you cry and feel for her torn soul. She brought some of it upon herself. After Samuel died in war sge should have moved on in life. It would have been better for her and the two brothers of Samuel.

I can't tell you why you don't think Brad Pitt is beautiful in this movie. This is Brad at his best. This is a story about mentally challenged and self destructive family that sent to death two women and one man before their time., with perfect portray of personality disorders. Not impressed at all, just very much discussed.
