Hi Roy, What made this episode so enjoyable is looking back at what we all have gone through with you over the past 8 years. It was so good to see how the layout evolved and aged gracefully. Not so much you or I. Thank you. My love to your beautiful bride. Jim
Thanks for your really nice comment, Jim. I appreciate it. Sometimes it seems like we're making little or no progress on our layouts, but a "look back" proves that we come further than we thought. ...Roy
Roy, I have been watching your channel for a number of years now, but you still inspire me. Right now, I'm going to stop sitting here watching videos and go downstairs and do SOMETHING on my layout!
Thanks, Gary. I appreciate your comment. Thanks for coming along. Yep, we can do armchair modeling for quite a while, but eventually, most of want to get up and do something on our layouts. ...Roy
Roy, This was very informative. If I was young enough to rebuild my layout, I believe that I would switch from flex track to the Kato Unitrack. Thanks for sharing your journey.....John
Thanks for your comment, John. I really appreciate it. I know that not everyone likes Kato Unitrack, but for me, having built a layout using flex track back in the 1980's, I can only say that I would never go back to flex track after using Kato track on my current layout. I'm just too darn old for all that bending, cutting, and soldering. ...Roy
Thank you so much Roy. I don't know that you are the slowest. I am slow. I sometimes don't get into the train room for several days at a time. However, you continue to inspire me to do things. I have just started to build some of my old building kits. As I get these done and placed, I hope to send some photos. Thank you again for sharing.

Thanks for sharing. It was good to see you again. I hope all is well. Take care. Enjoy yourself, see ya next time.

Roy thanks for sharing your progress on your railroad. You know a railroad is never done so enjoy your layout. Nice job keep up the good work. Have a good day.
Just got a comment from you, much appreciated, it was about Shady Maple, as I am from Allentown, PA area and will always call the Lehigh Valley RR my favorite however I model UPRR alone I-10 in the far west as a fictitious merger of the two railroads S I not only was a brakeman but an over the road trucker and fell in love with the desert and scenic possibilities. Keep those videos coming.
Thanks, I am also a big fan of the Lehigh Valley RR. A past brakeman and over the road trucker I modeled a merger between LVRR and UPRR in the far west desert! Loved the scenery and modeling possibilities! Thanks for the come back and keep those videos coming.
I hear you, Kent. I grew up in central PA, and whenever I travel back there, I get a special feeling that I get no where else in the world. In the 1980's, I built a layout based on Conrail set in central PA. Now, I model the UP in a western setting because the desert and semi-arid areas of the American West and Southwest fascinate me. ...Roy
You've come a long way Roy and overcome some difficulties on the journey. Improvement keeps the interest going, but it's not about perfection. Just that eighteen inch extension at Evanston gave you that Echo Canyon stretch that we all enjoy railfanning.
Thanks, Mark. It seems like model railroading presents us with a non-stop series of challenges along the way. Overcoming those challenges can be so rewarding. ...Roy
Thank you for sharing. I really enjoyed your video. I'm also glad that I watched it now that I'm in the design face of my layout, you give me a lot of ideas.
Nice layout and excellent work! I’m lucky enough to drive through Echo Canyon and Weber River several times a year, and agree on how scenic it is! Thanks for sharing!
thanks Roy. I have been curious as to the overall layout plan and this was a great tour. I also am rejoining the hobby after being gone for about 30 years and your track plan and build helped a lot.
Hey Roy... this was really informative on your layout construction you've made over the years.... Im glad to see Im not the only one tearing up portions of my layout... Your mtns and canyon are really nice... I thought that was interesting on that little extension piece of track.... Ive never see that before... Take care and stay healthy!! Daylight Dave!! 😜
Thanks so much, Dave. It's always nice to hear from you. I'm working on another small change to the benchwork and trackwork right now. The challenge, though, becomes how to expand the benchwork when the train room is already full (without resorting to upper levels and more helices). ...Roy
This is one of the best layouts I've ever seen. I have been a model railroader since I was 4 years old and got introduced to N Scale in 2018. You say your layout is small, but the layout that my dad and I are working on for my little room is 6' by 56"! I cant wait to get a big house and build one of these layouts.
Well Roy I think I'm the slowest model railroader builder in the world..got my train shed end of 2020 and just have wiring and almost insulation done for now..thanks for sharing and keep up the great work..Lance

Really nice video Roy. So nice to look back over your achievements. The reason I am slow doing a total renovation of my layout is mainly health. I am now so shaky I cannot even get wires soldered in a D Type connector, and I can't stand for more than 15 minutes at a time. I hate getting old! Cheers, Bob
Thanks for your comment, Bob. It's always good to hear from you. I know exactly what you mean when you say that age and health can slow down our layout progress, and I know it from personal experience. LOL! ...Roy
Very informative layout on how you built your layout Roy. I finally got my trains running on my layout. My layout is double track. The first expansion part is where I will place the planned South end of my staging yard, the diesel locomotive shop, diesel fuel storage tanks will also go there. I still have a lot of work to do on it. I’m just taking my time to work on it.

Wow, so impressive! I am building my N scale UP layout n a room the same size in my house and I never thought of the helix curves idea, and I think I am going to do it myself. Thanks for the inspiration!
Fascinating Roy - the footprint of the layout is about the same as mine. Looks much bigger in appearance on your videos. I've just installed two helices to provide more storage yards underneath the main layout. Cheers Euan
If you’ve seen Wyoming then your layout is pretty accurate representation of it. Been watching your videos for years and hope your doing great! I model the Gulf Coast Lines (merged into mopac in 1935) and it consists of two GCL branch lines, the Brownsville sub Bloomington yard, and a interchange with southern pacific to serve my third and final branch line. Due to space constriction to connect all three levels I have to use a modular helix, there’s 4 drop in n play modular connector pieces, and two hinged extensions as well as two staging cassettes that double end my 30 foot representation of the Brownsville sub going through Bloomington yard and finishing past placedo interchange and into staging.
Thanks, my friend. From the beginning, I've been trying to "capture the feeling" of the area I'm modeling and the UP trains running through it, so I appreciate your comment. I enjoyed reading about your modeling efforts. Please keep me posted. ...Roy
Hell Roy I don't think your the slowest building ever until you met me. I started mine in 2015 and barely done three quarters of it. Of course I still work but I'm a seasonal worker and during the winter months the layout has my full attention. The layout room is 12 1/2 feet by 24 for ho and its all freelance.

Oh Mr. Roy did you see what the Union Pacific dominated just a few weeks ago,, The 3985 the 5511 and the 6936,, and believe it's E9 and the a and B unit Oh my goodness, Boy o boy I was watching that👍
Great Video Roy! I do like the layout's dark varnish finish too! Since you built your layout, did you solder any of the track or is it simply clicked in place? Cheers!
I guess Kato is It's going to release that big boy ,,This year is sometime but I have not given any dates,, Sounds really awesome thanks for telling me about it👍
Hi Roy, I agree, it's a life time hobby not a job. I have a question, when you say you were out of the hobby for 30 years, did you still purchase model railroad magazines? The reason I ask, some of my previous jobs kept me from building a layout because I was always traveling. So I spent a number of years as an armchair modeler and only able to keep current with the hobby through the purchase of the railroad magazines. But in reality, I feel I've been a model railroader for 52 years now. Always great to see your layout update video Roy, thanks for sharing this little walk down memory lane. Cheers, Rich S.
I hear you, Rich. Yes, I always felt like a model railroader, even during all those years when I was "out of the hobby." I guess once you're a model railroader, you're always a model railroader. I continued to read the magazines, and I did a lot of armchair model railroading. ...Roy
Well Roy I guess they lay out is never actually finished you always want to make a change at some point or add more detail but what you have accomplished so far I think looks fantastic keep up the good work 👍👍
Thanks for your comment, my friend. I could have built more clearance into the staging level, but doing so would have required more loops in the helices. I've got to tell you that the helices are my least favorite part of the layout. ...Roy
@@n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569 You can say that again. I am working on bridging an 18" elevation change with five loops of 76" diameter. Even wiring can be a pain in the posterior. By the way, have you ever had the chance to visit the Kato showroom in Tokyo? They have a number of great layouts on display.
@@ThisWorks4Me Unfortunately, I've never had a chance to visit the Kato showroom, and perhaps I never will. But it sure would be fun to do so, because I'm a really big fan of Kato. ...Roy
Roy, what a great layout review, I really enjoyed it! I’m about to start a second module to add onto my first by using the 2 spurs that I left in place for a future build (that my amazing wife doesn’t know about, she thought I used them to park trains in, LOL) I wanna us Kato double tracks on this project but as my original is all single track I’m thinking I’ll need to use a wye to make this happen and hope Kato sells them but we’ll soon see 😂 Thanks again, you’ve done an amazing job and if I’m not mistaken, you said you’re really never done with your layout? or was that me, LOL Ron
Roy, you finally inspired me to get out of my armchair. I've plunked down my money for the locomotive of my dreams. Heaven help me! Hahahaha Let the games begin!
Roy i actually thought your layout was much bigger, mines at 12x13ft and I still think its too small. I took my dining room and turned it into my train room.
You're slow? I bought a model railroading how to book in 1996. Still no layout. Although I did begin benchwork 2 years ago, but had to be dismantled because I ended up moving to an even smaller location, so everything is on hold for the foreseeable future.
Thanks for your comment, my friend. I'm amazed by how many friends in the hobby claim to be as slow as, or even slower than, me. Is that humanly possible? Ha! ...Roy

@@n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569 Thanks Roy... I believe I've been Subbed to you many many years and what i love about you and your layout is... It grows and is not removed or taken down .... Darrell
@@deraildarrell Thanks for coming along, Darrell. ...Roy
Really nice work! And don't get too radioactive from that pink foam! LOL
Thanks, my friend. I'm being very careful with that pink foam, because I've also heard it sometimes explodes spontaneously. Ha! ...Roy
Oh Mr. Roy did you see what the Union Pacific dominated just a few weeks ago,, The 3985 the 5511 and the 6936,, and believe it's E9 and the a and B unit Oh my goodness, Boy o boy I was watching that👍
It takes so long because there’s so many possibilities to consider and all the details to address. I’m finding this out while trying to plan a layout.
Great Video Roy! I do like the layout's dark varnish finish too! Since you built your layout, did you solder any of the track or is it simply clicked in place? Cheers!
Nope, no soldering, Piero. One of the reasons why I use Kato Unitrack is that soldering isn't necessary. ...Roy
I guess Kato is It's going to release that big boy ,,This year is sometime but I have not given any dates,, Sounds really awesome thanks for telling me about it👍
That's what I hear, Kevin. Can't wait! ...Roy
You have a very nice Layout Roy, it is going to take me a while to get there. Im also a slow builder. Greetings from Hai
Thanks, Hai. Good to hear from you. Many friends in the hobby claim to be as slow or even slower than me, but it's hard to believe. Ha! ...Roy
I continued to read the magazines, and I did a lot of armchair model railroading. ...Roy
Great video thank you
Thanks, my friend. It's a pleasure to share my layout progress with you. ...Roy
Nice video Roy!
Thanks, Manny. A pleasure to share it with you. ...Roy
Wow! Good job 👍🏻
Thanks. I appreciate it. ...Roy
Well Roy I guess they lay out is never actually finished you always want to make a change at some point or add more detail but what you have accomplished so far I think looks fantastic keep up the good work 👍👍
Thanks, Charles. You're right: a layout is never really done. ...Roy
Now I am Starting To Understanding Helix’s I would Like The Oval instead of The Circular Helix. If I were to Go Helix Style.
In my experience, an oval is better than a circular helix. ...Roy
Great job at documenting your layout. The Kato track sure speeds things up. In retrospect, would you have made more clearance for your staging deck?
I’m about to start a second module to add onto my first by using the 2 spurs that I left in place for a future build (that my amazing wife doesn’t know about, she thought I used them to park trains in, LOL)
I wanna us Kato double tracks on this project but as my original is all single track I’m thinking I’ll need to use a wye to make this happen and hope Kato sells them but we’ll soon see 😂
Thanks again, you’ve done an amazing job and if I’m not mistaken, you said you’re really never done with your layout? or was that me, LOL Ron
Good to hear from you, Ronald. Thanks for your comment. You're right: A layout is never done. ...Roy
Being The Slowest Model Railroader Dosn’t Matter It’s The Passion of model Railroading That Matters.
So true, Ellery. There's no hurry. It's a hobby, not a job. ...Roy
Roy, you finally inspired me to get out of my armchair. I've plunked down my money for the locomotive of my dreams. Heaven help me! Hahahaha Let the games begin!
Have fun with that new locomotive, my friend. ...Roy
@@n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569 Thanks Roy! It won't be here for awhile, pre-orders take time.
Here we go!!
Roy i actually thought your layout was much bigger, mines at 12x13ft and I still think its too small. I took my dining room and turned it into my train room.
I hear you, my friend. I think most layouts tend to look bigger in photos and videos than they are in real life. ...Roy
I guess it's a good thing I chose to use blue foam.
Absolutely, Bahn. Blue foam won't explode on contact. ...Roy
There ho and n scale on UA-cam now of the Evanston sub
True, but the N-scale Evanston Sub started on UA-cam way back in 2014. ...Roy
Ha! ...Roy
